“I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. It is not merely a word; it is a dream to put forth continuous efforts to lessen human pain and suffering and to foster development of weaker sections on sustained manner with sustainability. The founder of the organization has dedicated his/her golden 17 years in practicing and translating the theories into action. The Organization firmly believes that the essence of development is contained in the fact it is about human and the quality of their lives. It further feels that the issues of inequity can be corrected by addressing problems in the existing institution, relationship and Social Organizations

Sixteen-year-old Nagma lives in a small hamlet in Patna slum with 15 members of her family, including her mother, siblings, grandparents, and aunts and uncles. As her family are so conservative, they prohibited Nagma from attending school, specifically discriminating against their daughters. However, this obstacle never deterred her from fighting for her right to be educated.

Nagma’s ambition to become a teacher was only hindered by her families strict policy. But then she met an IZAD coordinator and everything changed. She was informed of our Chirag Centre which happens to be closely situated to her home.

IZAD took control and pressed upon Nagma’s family just how beneficial it would be to send her to our centre. After a short time her family were able to see the wonderful results for themselves as Nagma acquired functional literacy; helping her family to read and write as well. She now attends government school with her family's blessing and is well on her way to becoming a teacher.

Savita Devi hails from Mainpur village in Nalanda district. She is 45 years old and a single mother with two sons and one daughter. Tragically her husband died of cancer making her the sole breadwinner for her household.

She joined our Ekal Nari Sangarsh Samiti in 2009. As per the activists of the organisation, Savita is now a strong, independent woman. She met other single widows in her village who were chased out of their houses by their in-laws. Savita, along with other members of ENSS, talked with their families and succeeded in getting almost 75% of land back for these women.

Savita has continued to help people in trouble and gained the respect of her local villagers. During the previous panchayat elections she was nominated and subsequently elected as the Panchayat President (Mukhiya). Savita gives all the credit of her victory and acceptance to the Ekal Nari Sangarsh Samiti. She recalls that before joining the organisation she never used to leave her house and now she has achieved so much!

In 2011, the female literacy rate in Bihar was recorded at 53.33%; that’s over half of the state’s female population.The problem is, girls, especially those belonging to Muslim families, have to give up on education due to deep-rooted cultural restrictions (it was not considered important to educate women as they were seen as merely the house-help), economic constraints, or to manage the house in the absence of their mothers who work daily wage labour. 
 This project will open up new educational opportunities for girls. By promoting education in minority Muslim communities, young women will not only receive special training offered in life skills but also be educated similar to girls their own age.Our life skills training workshops are intended to ensure that girls receive basic skills in language, maths, science and art, thereby equipping them to attend senior school as a regular student. 
 To date, 300 girls have enrolled into 10 centres across our working area. Our target is to enrol 300 more by the end of the year.With your support, IZAD will be able to continue to work with deprived girls by educating them at our centres in Bihar villages.

There are more than 40 million widows in India; 10% of India’s female population. Only 28 percent of them are eligible for pensions and less than 11 percent actually receive their entitled payments. If a woman is not financially independent, she is at the mercy of her in-laws and her parents. A young woman is left completely defenceless if her family are without the resources to care for her or simply do not wish to. Most of them are deprived of their ownership rights to property, increasing their vulnerability. 
 We have launched a 'single women' movement, which is comprised of widows, divorced/separated women and those who are unmarried living in Bihar. This is an organised movement, which aims to ensure financial security to women as well as providing the right circumstances for them to lead a respectable life.We fight legal cases for women who have lost there land to money-lenders or those who have been abandoned by their husbands but are not legally divorced. Cases of denied entitled pensions and disability allowance are also reported and fought by us. 
 So far we have helped 280 women in obtaining pensions, 33 women to receive disability certificates and many more in reacquiring their land. Support us in our initiative by donating just 200 Rs ($4) to help one beneficiary.
