For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. “The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. Jagriti Yatra - 2025

The second wave of the COVID has hit the country badly. The healthcare infrastructure is crumbling under the increasing number of active cases and fatalities. The crisis has gone beyond the metro cities of India, and reached rural India, which are not equipped to handle a crisis of such mammoth severity. The main issues in rural India are that of awareness and education among the masses on preventive measures; lack of initial medical consultation support and adequate medical supply; and finally hesitancy among the local population to vaccinate themselves owing to the prevalent myths. And while the current crisis stands tall, the issue is also to build a long-term health infrastructure in rural India to meet the future problems, including the third wave of COVID. 
 Jagriti has designed following four strands to address the COVID crisis in Deoria and Kushinagar districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh. During the first wave of COVID as well we focused on providing ration relief to the migrant workers across these two districts.Strand 1: Aarogya Saathi·       Activate our channel of 60 digitally trained women and equip them with necessary knowledge and resources on COVID appropriate behaviours (CAB)·       Build awareness in the local communities using communication channels like Whatsapp and by making callsStrand 2: Rahat Vitran·       Distribute wellness and sanitation kit consisting of OTC Medicines, Immunity booster, mask, and sanitizers among 4000 families·       Supply 100 oxymeters in the needed families through our on-ground volunteersStrand 3: DigiSwasthya·       Create a telemedicine service program by setting up centres in the two districts·       Set up a helpdesk for local people to call and get first line of support·       Offer teleconsultation with our national network of doctor volunteers·       Support with medicine supplyStrand 4: Vaccine Registration·       Create messages to dispel the myths about vaccine and encourage people to register·       Deploy Aarogya Saathis to spread information on the vaccine·       Work with the local administration to facilitate smooth registration vaccine portals like CoWin 
 We will be covering five blocks of Deoria and Kushinagar districts. We are targeting 20,000 (4000 Families)  The intended impact is:·       Creating awareness about and emphasizing the need for people to continue to follow COVID Appropriate Behaviors (CAB) including wearing masks even aftervaccination·       Issuing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Home Care Services·       Alleviating social stigma and discrimination against COVID-19 patients and their families through large scale and targeted communication strategies.·       Supporting the State Governments and District Administration in filling the gaps in the routine delivery of public health services.·       Coverage of approximately 2600 Gram Panchayats using 60 Aarogya Saathis and 10 Project Coordinators and distributing wellness kits to 4000 families·       Providing medical teleconsultation to the needy families·       Cover 2.6 Lakhs+ people for vaccine registration

COVID RAHAT VITARAN

Situation AssessmentThe COVID crisis has led to nationwide distress due to immediate challenges with the delivery of healthcare services, and due to the loss of jobs and livelihoods of vulnerable communities, especially returning migrant laborers, impacting their dependent families.In the context of eastern Uttar Pradesh, where Jagriti is working, the distress is pronounced because of high influx of the migrant labourers, who have lost their jobs in other states. Their dependent family members, especially women, who were employed with local informal enterprises, are also losing their livelihoods because of the slow collapse of these enterprises.The local district administration so far is focused on providing immediate relief in the form of food and ration to the vulnerable communities, and ensuring lockdown and social distancing is followed. The Govt has announced to transfer INR 1000-5000 to construction workers, and additionally, the State Govt is supporting the informal sector laborers with INR 1000. Beneficiaries Identification Target – 2000 families impacted by COVID Approach: 1. Jagriti is creating a list of 50 Gram Panchayats (GPs) in the Deoria district where Jagriti has a strong connection with the Gram Pradhan.2. Within these 50 GPs, the target is to identify 40-50 families that are adversely impacted by the COVID crisis. The families of migrant workers and daily wage workers will be given preference.3. Jagriti has already been distributing ration/food kits among the needy families (around 170 families covered). We will include these families under this program. 
 Response Action (Healthcare &amp; Food) – 1.     Distribution of ration / hygiene kits for 15 days, which includes 6 masks, 5 hand soaps, 2 kg potato, 2 kg onion, 5 kg flour, 5 kg rice, 1 kg dal, 1-litre mustard oil, 1 kg sugar, and spices<ul><li>   Direct distribution of the kits through our volunteers</li><li> Ensuring that the families get the kits from the Gram Pradhaan as per the direction of the Government. Jagriti has a three-pillar approach to building entrepreneurship ecosystems in Tier 2/3 districts. Initiatives<ol><li>Jagriti Yatra - A 13-year old 15-day, 8000-km entrepreneurship train journey program, Jagriti Yatra, has created a community of 5700+ youth across India, 28% of them turning into entrepreneurs.</li><li>Jagriti Ambassador for District Entrepreneurship (JADE) – A district-level outreach program to promote entrepreneurship through interventions like business-plan competition, workshops and seminars. 100+ districts have been targeted through this program.</li><li>Jagriti Enterprise Centre  - A regional incubation program to support local entrepreneurs through mentorship, market access and funds. Currently the focus is on Deoria and nearby districts. Recently we have been awarded the Atal Innovation Community center project for Uttar Pradesh. The objective of this program to create and support 200 regional entrepreneurs in next 5 years.</li></ol>
