Stray dogs and other animals on the streets live a life of acute deprivation. The most painful part is the manner in which they meet their end–lonely and helpless. While some may sustain grave injuries after being run over by vehicles, others are at the risk of starvation and illness. Often, people ignore their plight as they are strays. But not Sudha Narayanan. It’s been almost a decade since Sudha decided to set up a hospital and shelter home for stray dogs and other animals. Sudha’s NGO Charlie’s Animal Rescue Centre (CARE), since its inception in 2013, has saved the lives of thousands of stray animals with urgent trauma care and medical help. Sudha has shouldered a significant amount of the cost of treatment for these animals for a decade. Sudha says, “People pour acid on stray dogs and cats. They are beaten, have their legs broken and even sexually abused…injured animals often receive no care or attention from people around them. They are forced to crawl into a ditch where they die a painful death unnoticed.”<img src="https://cfstatic.give.do/620bc0eb-ae3d-4df4-aa19-dc8ead2d215a.jpg" />CARE has taken up the responsibility of providing life-saving trauma care and medical intervention to the strays. The NGO’s rescue helpline receives numerous calls throughout the day. CARE’s team brings the rescued animals to its trauma care centre, where the sick and the injured are admitted and taken care of. With the help of proper medical care the animals are nursed back to health. The animals who are no longer fit to survive on their own due to serious injuries are kept in the NGO’s shelter home which is currently home to over 150 stray animals including dogs, cats, birds etc. The struggle to stay afloatWith their rescue helplines ringing off the hook and the number of helpless animals increasing with each passing day, CARE is finding it difficult to keep going. “The number of animals we save and shelter are increasing continuously. And if we don't get the support we require, unfortunately these animals will also be left without anybody to look after them. We need a huge amount of money for critical care medicines, for animal care items and for the essential food needed for the sick and injured animals. This sometimes leads to miscarriages, too. The groundwater level here is 700-800 feet deep and it becomes very difficult to bring it to the surface through hand-pumps and the water is brackish, which makes it impossible to drink. Most families are surviving on just rice and salt which is provided by the government. The Marwar region is the most densely populated arid zone in the world. It is a part of the great Thar Desert in Western Indian and is characterised by harsh physical geography and a fragile ecology. Jal Bhagirathi Foundation (JBF) has developed an innovative model of water management.With a meagre annual rainfall of 200 MM and saline groundwater, life is an endless struggle in Marwar. With the changing climate, droughts have become more frequent with the region witnessing six drought years in the last decades. The temperature reaches 50+°C in summer.The challenges facing the people of the Thar Desert are manifold. Water scarcity has resulted in chronic poverty and vulnerability for the population, forcing people to compromise on the quality of drinking water and consume water having high levels of nitrates and fluorides adversely affecting the health of the people in the long term. Drinking water scarcity is an economic strain on communities as they have to buy water, transported through tankers from vast distances.To address this, JBF seeks to revive and construct rainwater harvesting structures through community mobilisation. The goal is to manage water resources sustainably within the environmental constraints, creating water security by decentralised and adaptive water resource management resulting in improved resilience to climate change.

The Western State of Rajasthan has only 1.15% of the country's total water resources, although it covers 10.5% of India's geographical area and hosts 5.6% of its population. With a meagre annual rainfall of 200 MM and saline groundwater, life is an endless struggle in Marwar. With the changing climate, droughts have become more frequent with the region witnessing six drought years in the last decades. The temperature reaches 50+°C in summer.The challenges facing the people of the Thar Desert are manifold. Water scarcity has resulted in chronic poverty and vulnerability for the population, forcing people to compromise on the quality of drinking water and consume water having high levels of nitrates and fluorides adversely affecting the health of the people in the long term. Drinking water scarcity is an economic strain on communities as they have to buy water, transported through tankers from vast distances.Women in the Marwar region spent one-third of their lives collecting water, walking up to 3-4 kilometres a day, under the scorching sun. Scarcity results not only in the drudgery of women and girl child but also has a huge opportunity cost, with lack of time for education and other productive work. Due to the absence of participatory approaches and location-specific strategies, communities have neglected traditional water harvesting and conservation systems which had developed over centuries and helped desert communities to survive. 
 JBF seeks to revive and construct rainwater harvesting structures. JBF works with the local communities, mobilising them and assist them in building rainwater harvesting tanks called Tankas within their home premises. The Underground tanks bring water closer to home; storage in these tanks is augmented through rooftop water harvesting. Tankas decrease evaporation and seepage losses which occur in surface water harvesting bodies.Building household Tankas, in such constraints, is the most appropriate, sustainable, user- friendly and the most replicable solution. Tankas are built in areas where the population is sparse, the municipal supply of water scanty and there are no other sources of surface water in a radius of approximately 1.6 km. They are designed for maximum efficiency in capturing the short, intermittent rainfall providing 10-12 months’ supply of water. Handpumps are installed at each tanka to ensure safe drinking water.JBF’s model is a ‘Community Led Water Management System’ implemented through village water user associations called Jal Sabhas. As women are primary stakeholders, their participation is crucial to our water management systems. All Jal Sabhas have at least 20 percent women as members. The strategy has been successful, with women coming forward, leading to the formation of all women Jal Sabhas. 
 ▪ 1800 homes have been equipped with rainwater harvesting tanks creating a capacity to harvest more than 40 million litres of water every year.▪ Water availability has increased from an average of four months to 10-12 months in a year resulting in poverty reduction &amp; better quality of life▪ Inclusive Jal Sabhas (water user associations) with the participation of marginalised sections &amp; women facilitated &amp; capacitated for community management of villages resources▪ Women &amp; girl child saved from the daily drudgery of head loading water▪ A unique system of financing water infrastructure- In each village, a development fund called Jal Kosh is set up in which communities raise 30 % of the cost of the water harvesting systems. All contributions are raised in cash and formalized by opening a bank account.▪ Other than the Tankas, 500 community water harvesting structures constructed/revived in 550 villages of the Thar Desert in Western India▪ We proudly have a beneficiary community of approximately 700,000 people and their livestock▪ Community institutions have set up pricing mechanisms for managing water harvesting structures by devising systems of collecting a user charge. The proceeds are used for long term maintenance of the water structures.
