“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. That was the day I knew my mission in life was to get these children out of the hell-like conditions in red-light areas. JLKP(Jan Lok Kalyan Parishad) came into existence in 1993 and was registered under SRA during 1994 vide registration number 790 /94, as well as Jharkhand -161 with 12A, FCRA, and 80G.The organisation aims at holistic development of tribal and minority community with a focus on the adolescents, women, and children as well as marginalised SC/ST and PTG groups. It emphasises on education, human rights, capacity building, ARSH, RCH, health and hygiene.JLKP is a grassroots level organisation that primarily works on entitlement realisation and education at different Blocks of Pakur and Sahibganj districts. This includes facilitating linkages of local institutions with government services, building up the capacity of traditional institutions by spreading awareness on health and education, gender discrimination etc.We have realized that special skills are required to understand the basic problems of adolescents, the Paharia (PTG groups), the Santhals, and other minorities and initiate their development at the grassroot level.It is pleasant to mention here that JLKP has also been a partner in implementing a lot of health projects, child projects, livelihood, education, etc funded by national and international funding agencies as well as the government.The ongoing health and children related ( CHILDLINE, CRECHE, SHELTER HOME, MNH -Mother and new natal health care , Programme etc. ) project is provided sufficient opportunity to JLKP in terms of identifying local needs of the society and people, and motivate them to take active part while implementation of the activities are going on. It has also enabled the organization in establishing strong linkages with the local resource agencies, villagers, and parents, etc.

The major problem in the project area is the rising rate of child dropout and non-school going children. The other problems are as below:1. Long-Distance travel by students for reaching school.2. A high rate of child trafficking, child marriage, child labour, unsafe migration, etc. 3. Hard to reach hilly areas4. No linkage with government schemes for children 5. Poverty6. Lack of awareness about the Right to Education and its benefits for society and childrenThe socioeconomic-demographic condition of the targeted block is deficient as compared toother blocks of Pakur district. The child dropout ratio to the non-school going children ratio is veryhigh as per the Census 2001, 2011, Survey of ICSSR, Survey Report of JLKP. There are only 40% of villages in Littipara block with a primary school, only 4.1% of the villages have a middle school, and only 67.8% have a primary and just13.6% have a middle school. The rate of literacy of Tribal of Pakur district is the lowest as compared to other districts of Jharkhand state, as per the Census 2011.

 Education for tribal children through movable smart class and one-stop education centre implemented in 2015 till date, with the total number of child beneficiary being 225 in the age group 6-18 years. The Innovative concept shall ensure that the children do not have to travel here and there for education. The parents and community involved with this program will also get benefitted, as the education of children will empower them as well. They also support this program because they get various indirect benefits which help them in making their lives better, day by day.
