Farmers’ suicide is a common phenomenon in our country today; if we deeply think, it is not because of debt he has borrowed but because of lack of assured irrigation. While borrowing the loan, he is very much aware how much he is borrowing @ what rate of interest and how much he will have to repay on what date. He did not commit suicide till the crop condition was good but only when he failed to provide irrigation mainly due to DROUGHT. Imagine, he could ensure single irrigation to his standing crops during this critical time, would the farmer commit suicide? This is why we are proposing to create water banks where they can store this excess water for life saving irrigation (this water not only saves the lives of standing crops but also of the farmers). Water is life in this sense is true and thus ensures livelihoods of rural farming communities. Sole source of livelihood: All those families from the tail end of Tungabhadra Irrigation Project having about &lt;2ha of land and are receiving inadequate irrigation for cultivation is considered as beneficiaries of this model. They solely depend on wage-earning for their survival. Almost all families live below the poverty line (have BPL cards). The younger generation, soon after their matriculation get absorbed into construction field to support their parents in livelihood while the girls are forced to marry. Land is the sole source of livelihood while lack of irrigation is making agriculture a loss-making enterprise.Irrigation water is a critical input for farming in most part of the nation. During rainy season, we make way for the runoff from our farms to drain out and later during peak season we blame GOD/GOVERNMENT for not getting enough irrigation water. Instead, if we can store the same runoff could be used during peak season. It is therefore generally agreed by the farming communities that the reason of farmers’ suicide is “irrigation” and they are convinced that-<ul><li>If water is given, they can feed entire nation</li><li>Like rural godown (grameen bhandara yojana), water banks should be created by Government of India in each farm</li><li>Like house for an urban family, create water bank for their children by peasant community in rural areas.</li></ul>Issue<ul><li>Tail ends of any irrigation project is exposed to a peculiar problem i.e. two extremes of water availability.</li><li>Inundation of standing crops due to excess water flowing through the canal during rainy season; the upper reach farmers do not require irrigation during this period.</li><li>Drying up of standing crops due to inadequate irrigation water during the peak season; the upper reach farmers allows water to flow through the canal only after saturating their irrigation needs.</li><li>This we call as 2-extremes of water availability – inundation &amp; drying up of crops due to water availability. Years’ experience taught the farmers to cultivate part of the land which they can save (provide life saving irrigation) during peak season, rest (20-50%) of the land remains fallow throughout the year. As a result, the productive land reduced and thus income of the family; the family caught into debt to manage the affairs and decides to commit suicides in many cases.</li></ul>On the other hand, the runoff generated from each farm @ normal rainfall of the area (581mm) generates sufficient water to cultivate 2-ha farm if harvested it systematically. But, we make way for the water to flow out of the farm during rainy seasonThus, basically this model addresses the twin problems of livelihood of the tail end farmers i.e. optimizing profit in agriculture (by diversified cropping pattern) and providing adequate irrigation by addressing 2 extremes of water availability. 
 In consultation with the stakeholders, we have evolved an innovative intervention to tackle 2-extremes as well as making the fallow land useful to ensure 10-securities to small holders. We shall motivate the smallholder farmers to excavate ‘Water Bank’ in fallow part of the land; harvest excess water during rainy season and use it for life saving irrigation (water security-1) during peak season. Thus, 2-extremities of water availability addressed. Cultivate fish (food security-1), plant biomass generating and fruit bearing trees on the bunds of the structure to improve soil fertility (fertility security-2) and ensure fuel-wood (firewood security-3). Grow fodder (fodder security-4) in part of the land to manage 1-2 milch animals for health management as well as regular income (financial security-5); also use the cow excreta for plant protection and soil health improvement (input security-6). Diversify cropping pattern to distribute risk of crop failure – loss by failure of one crop will be compensated by other crops (food security-7). Grow few medicinal plants in part of the land (health security-8). In order to do all these activities, the entire farm families need to engage themselves in the farm activities throughout the year (employment security-9). Cultivation in part of the land for family consumption (food security) and regular income. Further, agriculture without women is a day dream and almost all the productive units proposed in this model are labor intensive demanding women participation and return goes directly to the women (gender balance). If all these are met, the farming family will gain a social status in the society (social security-10). This is how 10 securities are ensured to a family targeted under the program. 
 The success of the project is measured using predefined indicators-<ul><li>Increment in productivity of the farms where water banks are created by 20%</li><li>Additional employment generation in the farms having water banks by 25%</li><li>Increase in land use intensity by 15% by the end of the project period</li><li>Increase in sustainable income of the faring families after 2 cropping seasons</li></ul>

Janakalyan has an agriculture initiative that is dedicated to the upliftment of farmers across the state of Karnataka. They have been working to provide appropriate agricultural or artisan tool kits to farmers in ten flood- affected villages of North Karnataka.The BasicsThe idea was conceived after the Sindhanur floods where they decided that they would provide the villagers appropriate equipment which in turn would help them do their jobs more efficiently. For instance they provide an iron box to a washer-man or a pair of sickles to a daily-wage worker. With the right equipment, these people work more efficiently. The goal of this benefit is to ensure a steady source of income for these families without having to depend on others for financial support. 
 How It Works• Members of the staff personally visit the village.• They interact with the families, and village representatives to assess the prospective beneficiaries based on skill and occupation.• Based on the information gathered, families best suited to receive the toolkit are identified and short-listed.• Families that are selected are given a token and asked to collect their tool kits on designated dates.• Meanwhile, the administrative staff at Aapna Janakalyan buys the tool kits and prepares them for distribution.• The packages are brought to the villages on the designated days and distributed to families that were issued the token.The distribution of the kits is directly dependent on the funds being mobilized from various sources including Give India. So each contribution no matter how big or small goes a long way to help the farmers of North Karnataka. Although percentage rise in their levels of income has not been estimated, based on their occupation or skill, they are capable of generating Rs. 150- 300 per day. 
 Start EarningYankamma is a widow of Mr. Sanna Dyavanna of Hedaginal village of Sindhanur taluk in Raichur district. She has a son and a daughter to take care of while has no source of income than washing clothes and ironing for others. Her only son is mentally retarded and lived in a hut which was washed away in recent flood along with all belongings. Thus she is in hand to mouth situation and fully dependent on doll-ration.As part of livelihood restoration project of Janakalyan, volunteers identified her as a critical beneficiary and provided an iron box with a wooden table, a bucket and detergent powders. Though, she was not able to earn as much as she was earning in normal days but can manage her small family without depending on doll-ration provided by government / philanthropic agencies.Yankamma as well as many others have become self-reliant immediately in the aftermath of flood by the intervention of volunteers of Janakalyan. Artisans like tailor, blacksmith, carpenter, barber, mason, washer-man and wage-earners and farmers have secured their livelihood through this unique intervention.

The economic condition of 25000 displaced communities in India is extremely bad. The problem with the backward society is that they consider women nothing less than a liability. As a result, they get them married at the tender age of 14-16. The early motherhood results into still birth, under-weight birth, malnourished children, infant mortality, maternal mortality, family problems, divorce, suicide, etc. They live in hand to mouth situation without proper care to their children, either health or education. Finally, they are forced to engage their children to earning in the age of learning and force them to marry in tender age; the vicious cycle continues. 
 Janakalyan provides decentralized education institutions at their doorstep where these girls can study from their home. These girls are provided with scholarship and other monetary supports to continue their post metric education so that burden on parents become nil. Life / vocational skills of these girls are also enhanced to ensure they become self-reliant in long run. Parents counselling, Parents Teachers Meeting, Students Counselling, Admission Drives, Regular coaching, special coaching, legal awareness about child marriage/ child labor, etc. are some of the unique activities Janakalyan takes up to address the issue. 
 All the adverse effects of early child marriage shall be averted by our education program. The marriage age will hopefully increase to 18-21 years. Every year we will be able to benefit 150 students effectively by providing them adequate education. Along with that we will be awarding 150 scholarships every year and we will conduct 30 parent teacher meetings. Now, there future lies in your hands.

There are many children in villages who could not puchase the required school stationaries due to poverty at home. The uniform, text books and mid-day meal is available in the government schools but who should provide them with the necessary note books, pen, pencils, geometry box, water bottle, bag and such other necessities? There are many children who drop out of the education system when teachers pressurises for these stationaries. Janakalyan identifies such deserving children and provide them with an education kit containing all these items. During 2019-20, Janakalyan with the support of GiveIndia has helped many children of North Karnataka as presented in the chart above. 
 Janakalyan has an education initiative that is dedicated to ensuring that education reaches the far corners of the state of Karnataka. They have been tirelessly working toward making comprehensive education material available to children in the flood -affected villages of North Karnataka.How It WorksJanakalyan is dedicated to this initiative and believes in leaving no stone unturned.• Members of the staff personally visit each village.• They interact with the families, teachers, school authorities and other representatives of prospective beneficiaries, regarding the student’s attendance record and general class participation.• Based on the information gathered, students most suited to receive the education kit are identified.• Prospective students are short-listed at the beginning of each academic year (June- July).• Students that are chosen are given a token and asked to collect their respective kits on designated dates.• Meanwhile, the administrative staff at Aapna Janakalyan purchases the appropriate packages and prepares them for distribution.• The packages are brought to the villages on the designated days and distributed to students that were issued the token.The BasicsThe distribution of the kits is directly dependent on the funds being mobilized from various sources including Give India.  Small but BigSavaremma D/o Phakirayya was a student of Grade 5 who was under the parental care of her grandmother since she lost her parents within a year of her birth in Puladinni village of Sindhanur taluk. During the flood, she lost all her belongings including school stationeries. Providing school stationeries was impossible due to prevailing poverty and Savreamma was forced to take care of her cousin instead of school almost for 4-5 months.Savaremma learnt from her fellow-friends that school kit is provided by Janakalyan to all regular students as part of flood response program; it was mandatory for the students to be regular in school in order to get the education kits, which contains all school stationeries required for a student. She convinced her grandmother to obtain a school kit from the school and continue education.Savaremma is very regular to the school now pursuing her studies like any other children of her age; she and her grandmother are happy now while her aunt is not. A small intervention has helped many such Savaremma to build their bright career. School teachers expressed their gratitude for this noble intervention which has improved the school attendance significantly.

Give the gift of education by presenting an Education Kit to a poor child or youth of north Karnataka, INR 650

Aapna Janakalyan is committed to educating the girl child in various post- partition refugee establishments of Bengal, all of whom are currently distributed across four rehabilitation colonies under the Sindhanur Rehabilitation Project.More than 20000 refugees are residing in Sindhanur taluk of Raichur district; their only source of income is 4-5 acres of land provided by Government of India 50 years back. Per capita land availability has reduced while the yield per acre has gone down to any extent. Many families live in hand to mouth situation. Further, they do not fall under any protective reservation in Karnataka. The children are generally sent to schools and after matriculation engage them in driving/ construction works while the girls are married at the age of 14-15 years. Lack of transportation, lack of hostel facility, security to the girls, etc. are some of the reasons for dropping out while the important being poverty. Janakalyan identifies such children/youth from refugee communities and help them with Rs.2000 stipend to pursue their college education at least till they become 18 years old. During 2019-20, Janakalyan has supported many children/ youth with the support of GiveIndia as presented in the chart. 
 How It WorksAapna Janakalyan has been diligently working towards its mission to ensure refugee girls get a holistic education. Along with making them confident and self reliant, it will further makes them employable, thus improving their quality of life.• A team of Aapna Janakalyan approaches various schools to gather information regarding the number of refugee girls completing their 10th standard.• With a little assistance from the teachers, the girls are segregated based on performance and those with the best performance records are selected.• The nature of support extended to these girls is decided upon based on certain parameters like level of interest of the pupil and economic status of the families among others.• The nature and extent of support could be either for accommodation or tuition fee for one term depending majorly on the availability of funds.• In some cases, the support offered may extend to the subsequent year simply to discourage the student from dropping out due to lack of funds.Often the help that Aapna Janakalyan provides in introducing the girl to college education, encourages the families of these girls to at the very least allow them to complete the course because they can cite financial constraint as an excuse. In rare cases, parents allow them to pursue higher education or find employment. 
 Education made it PossibleAshok, a meritorious student matriculation and intermediate, is son of Shanti Biswas, a refugee-farmer from Rehabilitation Colony of Sindhanur; He faced extreme difficulty in paying his admission fee for his computer education due to sever poverty. Being a refugee-child he did not get the benefits due to Namasudra caste enjoyed in other states.Ashok learnt that Janakalyan provides education support to such deserving and meritorious students and thus approached for possible support for his admission in computer education. Janakalyan continued its critical support throughout his education period by providing necessary learning materials and motivational supports along with fee while routine costs were born by his parents.Today, Ashok is the breadwinner of his family and his parents are happily living with him; he earns more than Rs.7500 per month using his computer skill in a private firm which he says more than enough for his family maintenance. He and his parents express gratitude to Janakalyan for their timely support to be what he is today.

Hygienic condition is gateway to healthy families and most of the rural families fail to procure hygiene materials. This leads to ill health which causes more expenses for medicine/treatment and thus family become poort. The vicious cycle continues. But if such families taste its benefits, they will never leave the practice. With this objective, Janakalyan planned to provide with a starter kit to  start hygienic practices in the house with the support of GiveIndia. The kit contains soap, surf, toilet brush, cleanin agents, scrubber, utensil cleaning cake, detergent cake, buckets, mugs, etc. Janakalyan has supported about many families during 2019-20 with GiveIndia support. 
 The extremely bad condition of health and sanitation is common knowledge. But it is rapidly becoming a major cause for concern in many parts of the country, even more so in flood affected regions. This has become a focal point due to the significant rise in life threatening diseases. Amongst its many endeavors, Janakalyan has taken the initiative to help improve the state of sanitation in ten flood-affected villages.How It WorksJanakalyan understands the importance and the sense of urgency that such causes warrant. Every family or village that we help takes us one step closer to our goal of a clean and healthy India. 
 Poor hygiene is gateway to ill-healthAmaramma (26), a labor lives in Pagadadinni camp, an irrigated belt of Sindhanur; Their house does not have a toilet and area is full of paddy fields. She got anemia in her first pregnancy due to less intake of food as she could not attend natural calls during day-hours. After several episodes of diarrhea and malaria, she finally lost her child.Janakalyan in collaboration with UNICEF is promoting sanitation &amp; hygiene practices; volunteers identified her as a critical beneficiary and helped to get a toilet constructed. Involved her in training programs to teach safe behavioral practices on hand washing, breast feeding, soak pit, water handling, excreta handling, food preparation, flushing toilet, etc. and provided hygiene kit for her family.Amaramma as well as her old mother-in-law happily live in her hut but proud to show the toilets to anybody who comes to her house; she has conceived again and takes nutritious food as per the direction of ANM. She does regular check up and gets vaccination despite having difficulties at home as she has learnt the importance of hygiene, sanitation, nutrition and vaccination from Apna Janakalyan.
