For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. “During a visit to a nearby village, I found two abandoned babies left to die in a cowshed. Visibly fragile and covered in dirt, the condition of the little ones left me in shock. Moved by the sight, I inquired in the area and was told that these babies were left there by their own family after they were diagnosed with HIV. I immediately brought the babies back home. This was in 2001 and that marked the beginning of a two-decade-long struggle to save abandoned HIV+ children from dying on the streets,” says 70-year-old Mangal Shah, fondly addressed as tai by her 150 adopted grandchildren. Mangaltai founded Palawi with a mission to give abandoned HIV+ children a second chance at life and, more importantly, to right the wrongs that society had done to them. For over two decades, she has rescued hundreds of children off the streets and given them the love they were denied for no fault of theirs. She has given the children life-saving medical care and education while helping them lead normal lives.“It does not cost us money to give them the love they deserve, but the cost of medical care, food, shelter, and education is more than what I can shoulder on my own and I need urgent help,” pleads Mangaltai. He was severely malnourished, sick and had a gaping wound on his head. Seeing the baby’s condition and the maggot-infested wound, doctors gave him six months to live. But Pranay is now 22 years old, he is financially independent and leading a normal life with dignity. What would have happened if I gave up on him?” Mangaltai has faced severe discrimination all along her journey with Palawi, owing to her work and for standing up for the rights of HIV+ kids. She was driven out of schools when she tried to get admissions for her children. “The discrimination against our children was such that they were not even allowed to set foot in any of the schools in this area. We were left with no choice but to start a school of our own,” says Mangaltai.The healing power of loveAccording to Mangaltai, the love that children of Palawi receive is one of the strongest factors in their recovery and healthy childhood. “We are there for these kids throughout the day. These kids have low immunity and are prone to illness. Which is why we need to be extremely cautious. We need to have regular health check-ups to ensure they are safe and healthy. But all of this comes at a cost. Blindness, predominantly from cataracts, is a major issue throughout the developing world, including India, where a combination of a large aging population and poor socioeconomic conditions has led to a high incidence, ensuring the largest blind population globally.The National Programme for Control of Blindness reported prevalence of blindness at 1.5% in 2016-17. According to worldwide research reports, 9 to 12 million Indians are blind and as per WHO estimates, the blind population will double by 2020 due to rise in population and longevity. WHO has identified Cataract as the leading cause of blindness (62.6%) followed by uncorrected refractive errors (19.7%); Corneal Blindness (0.90%), Glaucoma (5.80%), Surgical Complication (1.20%) Posterior Capsular Opacification (0.90%) Posterior Segment Disorder (4.70%) and Others (4.19%).Karnataka features among the states with High incidence and prevalence of blindness. Karnataka is home to 1 million blind and newer cases of cataract are being added to the existing backlog every year. North Karnataka region is particularly affected as here, the agricultural activity is dull, natural resources are scant and rains have often been inadequate in the last few years, leading to widespread poverty. Moreover, there are few eye care hospitals catering to the vision care needs of underprivileged people in North-Karnataka. 
 The project commences with identification of the villages having high prevalence of cataract in the selected districts in consultation with Aanganwadi workers, ASHA workers and members of the local community. Permission is sought from the project manager of DBCS of the corresponding districts. Once the approval is obtained, the village panchayat and health workers are consulted to determine the eye camp logistics. The concerned doctors-in-charge of the Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) are intimated to refer patients to attend the eye camp. Word about the eye camp is spread through public announcement system, distribution of pamphlets and putting up banners in public areas a week before the eye camp. A team of ophthalmologists and optometrists goes to identify patients in need of surgical treatment for cataract at the screening camps in the identified villages, sometimes conducting 2-3 eye camps in a day. The deserving patients are brought to the base hospital at an appointed date and provided with food, ocular examination, surgical treatment and accommodation, completely free of cost by JEH’s competent team of ophthalmologists and nurses. Following the post-operative vision test, patients are educated about post-operative care and are discharged from the hospital. Post-operative recovery of the patients is evaluated by conducting follow up screening at 1 week and 4 week intervals, until 6 weeks. Patients residing in villages within 50-60 km. are called to the base hospital for the final follow up. Patients residing farther than that are referred to partner local eye care providers, thus creating and utilizing an accessible network of eye care facilities.   
 With this project, JMF will continue working with zeal to fulfill its primary goal to serve poor patients of rural areas in the six districts of Dharwad, Haveri, Belgaum, Gadag, Bagalkot and Koppal and help them become independent to earn for themselves their livelihood.Expected Output/Impact1) To provide free of cost, state of the art eye care services in remote and deprived areas.<ul><li>Conduct 50 free eye camps in identified districts with cataract related blindness burden.</li><li>Screen 450 villages for cataract and other vision ailments.</li><li>Perform 500 vision restoring cataract surgeries.</li><li>Dispense 500 glasses after the surgery.</li></ul>2) To promote healthcare awareness and health care seeking behavior among the underprivileged3) To establish community based, sustainable and quality oriented eye care center.4) To enter into arrangements, agreements, contracts and collaborations with any governmental or non-governmental organization or authority, local or otherwise, any person or company that may promote the objective of the organization.
