For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. It will be very difficult to sustain it unless we get help,” he added. One act of your kindness can save these abandoned women, with no one in this world, from struggling on the streets to survive. Jeevan Aanand Sanstha (JAS) was set up in 2013, with the sole objective of catering to the destitute and homeless. Mr. Sandip Parab has been drawn toward helping the needy since his childhood. He moved to Mumbai when he was 24 and for the better part of the first decade worked with various social organizations serving women, HIV-infected, children, drug addicts, etc; but noticed that there were not many people or organizations helping the destitute senior citizens. He was moved to action, seeing these needy people on the streets; with no food, shelter, or healthcare. He started JAS, to serve as a bridge for the deserving needy. His vision, ‘Every forsaken person on the street of age 18 years and above lives a respectful life’ has led him to serve and help hundreds of people who have no one else.In this journey, he has observed so many senior citizens in rural and urban areas; who have children but still struggle for their day-to-day existence. We observed so many senior citizens in the rural and urban areas; who have children but still struggle for their day-to-day existence. The children are either not in the same city or are not in a position to care for their parents. He wants to be able to cater to these senior citizens, providing a place of residence that they can call ‘Home’, eliminating the sense of abandonment and instilling a sense of belonging in its place. As a country, and as individuals we have a moral and ethical obligation to ensure that these people are well looked after and cared for. Just like all of us, they too deserve love and nurturing! 
 Activities 1.     Selection of Residents: Meet/interview the elderly, at the road site, near the temple under the bridge, taking permission from the police and enrolling in Ashram.2.     Doing all pathology tests as per need and suggested by Doctor.3.     Daily/Activities Routine: Prepare and share the daily plan with each resident and staff as part of the Orientation – this should include details of daily routine, access to different facilities, food, medical facilities, etc.4.     Health &amp; Nutrition: the nutritionist will prepare a meal plan based on the resident’s needs and instruct/train the kitchen staff, and also ensure adherence to the plan. The nutritionist will work closely with the kitchen staff to plan, and ensure adherence to meal plans and any specific dietary requirements. 5.     Healthcare &amp; Medical: Doctors and nurses will ensure that all residents adhere to their medical specifications and also regular check-ups as per the needs of each resident. 6.     Recreation Plan: The OAH will develop activities daily that not only focus on the health of residents but also the recreational activities so that their mental health is in check and they are occupied with various activities that will help them boost their stay and make them feel like they are at ‘HOME’ – celebrating special days, festivals, cultural events, activities and events focussed on spiritual development, games, and fun, 7.     Agriculture activity:- Identifying people who are physically fit and have an interest in working in the agriculture field. Local people have been given agricultural filed to cultivate the land. Using agriculture products for Ashram. 8.     Cleanliness drive: - Once a quarter we are doing cleanliness drives at the railway station, Near Smashan Bhumu, and the school. Taking participation of local volunteers. 9.     CARE (Committed Action For Relief and Education):- Involving CARE students to Identify people at the Road site, Alone elderly people at home, and various activities of JAS. 10. Providing daily Lunch to alone Elderly people in Villages: - We are Identifying needy and alone elderly people in villages and starting lunch box services. As no one has the capacity to provide food to them on a daily basis. Since its inception, JAS has organized many activities such as providing ration, and health treatment to road site people. Also, during the winter season team provided blankets at midnight to needy people who were staying under a bridge or on the road. The team did regular outreach at the roadside to Identify destitute people for providing them with services. Conducted awareness sessions in schools and colleges to create awareness about Important of elderly people.•       After continuous regular follow-up and with the staff’s efforts. We rehabilitated 135 people in their own homes and reunited them with their families.•       Done rehabilitation of 766 destitute at JAS Ashram till today at various Ashrams•     Provided support to 70 people with services like grains, Food, health treatment, and clothes at the roadside and under the bridge during this period at midnight.
