I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. Neelam Besra, a tribal woman from a cluster of villages near Churchu, Jharkhand, fought all odds to pursue education up to graduation level. In her teens, she observed her friends dropping out of school due to girl child marriage. This pushed Neelam, a teenage girl then, to start working for girl child education. In early 2002, with less than Rs.1000 in hand,  she founded ‘Jharkhand Mahila Utthan’ along with few like-minded people from her  community. This women-led organization was built to focus on issues faced by the tribal population in the region, especially in the sector of development, gender and education. The organization works in 12 panchayats, with over 10,000 women and adolescent girls from Churchu and Dari blocks of Hazaribagh district. Neelam and her team  believe that education and financial independence of women are the most effective ways to tackle gender discrimination and domestic violence. While Jharkhand Mahila Uthan  promotes women leadership in local governance, they strongly feel that access to basic education can empower a large section of women to be independent and make decisions for their own personal and professional life.

The literacy rate of women in rural Jharkhand  remains at a stark 48%  compared to 72% for men . Most girls in Hazaribagh district do not pursue education post Class 7 (age 12). Reasons for low rates of graduation for girl children are: <ul><li>Lack of educational support to help learn subjects like Mathematics, English and Science. </li><li>Available tuition centers are far-off and are expensive</li><li>Family members work in other cities/towns due to which teenage daughters are expected to look after the households</li><li>Child marriages</li></ul> 
 Neelam and her team are organizing remedial classes in 5 villages of  Churchu block, Hazaribagh for  175 tribal girl children attending classes 8, 9 and 10. The remedial classes will focus on two functions:<ol><li>Provide resources - Through the remedial classes, the organization  aids the children with necessary educational resources like books, online material and  computer classes, that will help them learn better. Each village will have one center of 35 children each attending classes in the evenings post school. The teacher for the remedial classes will be chosen from the block area based on the teacher’s qualification and experience. </li><li>Leadership and mental health coaching - Along with providing remedial classes support, the organization works with the girl children on a one-on-one basis to understand if there may be any other issue that they may face that restricts them from pursuing their higher education. For example:  Through the case studies, the organization plans to make necessary action plans which cater to each child’s needs. </li></ol> 
 Through the remedial classes in the villages, the organizations aims to create impact in the lives of  175 tribal girls by - <ul><li>Improved academic performance of girl children which is regularly monitored and given individualized support.</li><li>Increase in the number of girl children attending high school after the remedial classes support is made available.</li><li>Reduced rate of child marriages in the region - The organization has been working for the last two  decades to fight child marriages but some instances still continue to take place. To completely eradicate child marriages in the region, the best way is to encourage the girl children to pursue education to be independent and financially secure. </li><li>Girl children have increased support - The project aims not only to fulfill educational needs, but also build on a personalized intervention with each and every girl child attending these classes, any issue that may cause any threat to their wellbeing can be recognized and eliminated directly. </li></ul>Overall wellbeing of girl children - The girl children in the region often lack hope for a better future due to the situation. Through this project, the girl children can grow up to be confident educated women who can pursue college education, build a career and be financially independent. The project will aid in them taking baby steps towards achieving this dream that can better their wellbeing for their lifetime.
