In 2007 the community in Nithari Village, Noida, Uttar Pradesh experienced traumatic and tragic incidents of sexual abuse, and serial murder of children. This was in addition to the already existing incidents of domestic violence, child labour, child marriage, kidnapping, rape, trafficking and abuse.Children in this area, born into poor families, where mothers are mostly maids, fathers rickshaw pullers, lack nutritious food,  proper clothes, but even basic care. Learning and sharing are non-existent, due to long and tiresome working hours of the parents and unhealthy surroundings. The safety and well-being of these children are at stake. Added to this is the existing socio-cultural discrimination of caste -class, religion, and gender. The community actively experiences multiple manifestations of violence and discrimination due to existing controls of old, traditional, customary practices and beliefs. Continuous local political factors that curb holistic, equitable and sustainable development also play a role. Children, women, community as a whole at Nithari Village are at the last rung of development, needing direction and support. Laws, Policies and Schemes of the Government do not reach them, nor are they aware of them, due to lack of information and education. Citizens’ rights are therefore unavailable to them. 
 Education: JWP Mera Sahara Project is a protection centre with a non-formal bridge school. It works for the all-around development of children to become confident, informed, responsible citizens, at par with children of mainstream schools. Children are exposed to mainstream schools by enabling them to participate in child-related programmes and competitions. These efforts have helped them to shed their sense of inferiority and instill a positive outlook on life and their future. 2.  Women’s Empowerment. Without women being sensitized, informed and conscious of their identity as citizens and mothers, children will have no direction. Therefore, JWP conducts adult education, skill training for economic stability for women. Healthcare, information on law and policies, community awareness and gender sensitization programmes are alco conducted.   3. Community Programmes for Sensitization and training of parents, leaders, to organize and strengthen a ‘watch dog’ group which oversees the running of the Centre and prevents violence against women and children. Empowerment programmes for women and men to become conscious of their identity, economically self-sufficient, adding to the family earnings for a healthy, dignified life. Tailoring and designing, beautician courses and cooking are conducted. Computer education and the National Institute for Open Schooling (NIOS) classes for further education. 
 Through the process of interaction, information sharing, and counselling, JWP endeavours to run Centres that provide a safe place for children and women in the Project area. The Educational programme seeks to provide non-formal education, nutrition, and good health. It thus prevents female foeticide, child abuse and rape, sale and trafficking, child marriage, forced child labour, domestic violence, and denial of all basic child rights. Local women are informed and trained to become trainers and counsellors to ensure that the correct messages regarding laws, policies, schemes and existing protection infrastructure and law and order machinery are accessible to them. Adolescent girls and women are informed about their citizens’ rights and how to access them. This is imparted through the medium of adult education classes, video sessions, and expert advice from resource persons, both medical and legal. The community is encouraged to become part of the ‘Watch Dog’ group to ensure adult education, safety, promote hygienic conditions, and to interact with the various departments of the local government to prevent violence, and enable the community to get all and various identity documents, bank accounts and ration cards, etc.

In Uttarakhand, Districts of Almora, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh, JWP- ‘Mera Sahara’ works with women farmers, single mothers, and young adults reaching out to around 10,000 families. Migration by male members to towns and cities leave women to deal with additional labour. Women form the major contributing factor to agriculture in these areas. They also manage the household, education of children and care taking of senior members of the family. This makes them both mentally and physically stressed and ill. Added to this is the gender discrimination that exists in the community because of old traditional, customary practices. Thus, women have to cope with both economic and social injustice. Girl children are also in the same condition. The bulk of the workforce depends on agriculture, especially in rural areas. The agriculture sector still remains the largest employer. In the urban areas, although the services sector does employ women, as a large percentage of the workforce, most of the jobs are informal jobs with low wages and negligible labour protection. Women thus need special measures to ensure that all natural resources and the environment are protected and helpful to their development. 
  JWP Mera Sahara addresses the challenges faced by hill women, children, and nature by providing: ·          Quality free non-formal education to adolescents, mothers and older women·          Skill Training for women farmers - provide new knowledge of farming and development of small farm tools to make farming less laborious. Making and use of small labour efficient farming tools, machines for weeding, threshing, etc., solar panels for heating and cooking and smokeless stoves·          Livelihood programmes for women, and adolescents in making shawls, durries, handbags, and biodegradable sanitary pads·          Environment initiatives like RDF (Refuse derived Fuel) briquet making machines to convert Multi Layered Plastics (MLPs), MLP and plastic baling, Fertilizers and seeds to grow organic Turmeric (haldi), Tulsi (Basil) and other herbs and medicinal plants.·          Information on existing laws, policies and schemes of the government that are helpful to them·          A safe place where women and their children get the opportunity for learning in a protective environment.·          Community meetings with women and community members to generate awareness on agricultural practices, healthcare and sanitation. Safety measures to prevent child marriage, child labour, trafficking, and domestic violence.·          Networking with Gram Panchayat, hospitals, police desks and community leaders to prevent violence on women and children. 
  ·        Reducing intense hard labour in the fields and fodder collection.·        Remodelled farming tools designed at the project manufacturing facility at a subsidized rate, has had an impact on around 10,000/- families in the districts of Almora, Bhageshwar and Pithoragarh of Uttarakhand State.·        Empowering village women with skills to work on sustainable farming and developing micro level understanding of marketing farm produce.·        Sewing, knitting shawls, handbag and durry making provides self-sustenance.·        Water conservation project by planting hundreds of indigenous trees has rejuvenated the water table. The village administration and hill committee has helped with saplings for soil research. Soil erosion in small areas were found to stabilize due to this exercise.·        Stoves with very little smoke, weeding and chaffing machines were on exhibition in many villages for which local collectives have placed their demands.Other successes are:1.   Preserving indigenous forest and biodiversity2.   Reducing laborious field work by remodeling tools to suit women farmers3.   Empowering women and young adults with knowledge for sustainable livelihood4.   Reducing migration towards urban areas5.   River and land life are protected by reducing the impact of plastic and other waste.

The Joint Women’s Programme (JWP) is a movement for the empowerment of women, children and the community. JWP’s aim is for freedom from all forms of violence and the creation of a new society characterized by an equal partnership between women and men in the home and society.  In the year 1979, it began as a forum for women for their identity as citizens and persons with equal rights. It conducted several research studies on issues such as the Devadasi System, Women &amp; Rape, Domestic Violence, Status of Single Women, Women workers, Women in Jails, The Dowry System, Immoral Traffic Prevention Act, Portrayal of Women image in the Media, and several others. The purpose of these studies was to bring about amendments in the existing laws and seeking new laws. In 2004 it was registered as a Society, under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 in New Delhi. This enabled JWP to start grass root programmes for empowerment and development and use the researched information as the base. In the year 2007, JWP started working in and around the slums, in Nithari Village, Noida, Uttar Pradesh, after the murder of several children whose skeletons were found in the drains of this area. This area consists very poor communities where children, and adolescents are to be found roaming the streets and by lanes. JWP initiated a programme to provide protection to the children, a safe place where they could both learn and play. “MERA SAHARA” an Education, Skill formation and Protection Centre was started here with small donations from friends and relatives and local support. JWP seeks to mobilize women and men against socio-economic and cultural disparities in society, and work towards development and empowerment. It brings together Government functionaries, Law enforcement agencies, and grassroots organizations on issues affecting the poor and the underprivileged groups.Currently, JWP has a presence in both urban and rural areas actively addressing issues of violence and discrimination against women and children, with emphasis on research, awareness-raising, and development, for law and policy change, gender sensitization, health education, non-formal education of children, adult education, and other grassroots activity for women and the community. Our Skill training programme is created for adolescents and women in computer use, tailoring and designing, weaving, cooking, and making basic agricultural farm tools for economic empowerment. Special emphasis is given to environment and the protection of biodiversity and to this end, JWP has designed several programmes on waste management, waste minimization, cleanliness and hygiene, plantation, preservation of traditional seeds.
