“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. Junglescapes is a non-profit engaged in the ecological restoration of degraded forests in the Western Ghats region of India, a global biodiversity hotspot. The restoration is being carried out in and around Bandipur Tiger Reserve, a major tiger and elephant habitat in India. The NGO follows a community-participative model, where members of local indigenous communities take an active part in the restoration efforts. This gives them sustainable livelihoods based on their traditional skills and also helps conserve their traditional ecological knowledge. Forest-dwelling communities across India depend on firewood as their fuel source. The collection of firewood is one of the major human pressures on forests. This affects forest health and biodiversity since many healthy trees are lopped and remain stunted. Apart from cooking, the other main use of firewood is for heating bathwater. The firewood collection is done mostly by women, either from the forests or forest fringe areas. This involves their spending almost 300 hours a year collecting firewood, Frequent visits to the forest increase the risk of human-wildlife conflict. The heating of water by traditional methods like heating on open stones or on large vessels embedded in a chamber. These involve over 2 hours of heating and also involves exposure to smoke hazards. Further, each house also emits around 2.3 Tonnes of CO2 a year by this activity. Most of these villages do not have running water or electricity and therefore alternatives like geysers or solar heaters are infeasible. 
 Junglescapes has started a project called "Green Flames" wherein highly fuel-efficient Gujarat boilers are being installed in the village homes. These boilers have been customised for manual feeding of water. These boilers use 85% less fuelwood, which means a saving of 1.2 tonnes of firewood per annum for each home. The boilers take less than 25 minutes to heat water. As these boilers work very well on garden and agricultural waste as well as small twigs, coconut shells, etc. the need for venturing into the forest for collecting wood is totally avoided. As a result of these benefits, there is a saving of almost 70% in time for the women which they can spend on taking care of themselves and their children. Importantly, the boilers mean a reduction of CO2 emissions by 2 Tonnes per home each year. Hence the boilers make a significant contribution to the mitigation of climate change.  As of now, we have installed 200 boilers across 4 villages. Bandipur Tiger Reserve has around 120 villages dotting its boundary, and at an average of 100 homes per village, there are 12000 homes that can be potential beneficiaries under the Green Flames project. We plan to cover 10 villages a year, which translates to 1000 boilers per year. The cost of a boiler including all costs is Rs 8000, of which the beneficiary contributes Rs 2000 and the rest is subsidised by Junglescapes. The net funding requirement is Rs 6000 per boiler.
