And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. Just.Play works with adolescents between the ages of 7 to 18 years. This age bracket is a crucial period of transition from childhood to adulthood. Adolescence is also a vulnerable age when children are confused about their self-image, sexuality and relationships with peers! How well they deal with these everyday struggles depends on the choices they make. Just.Play steps in to lend a hand in building competencies to effectively manage internal conflicts and emotions that mark this phase. We do this through the language of play. Play provides children with an environment similar to that of adolescence, which is fun and filled with challenges, uncertainty and making various choices. The Just.Play model recognises that every child experience distinct struggles during this period. However, some common capabilities that we focus to nurture in the children will shape their ideals, creative thinking processes and civic identity. These will be key factors for children to make informed decisions against destructive elements like substance use, and any illegal behaviour, that can lead to unfavourable outcomes. Apart from the learning avenues of play, we do this by also providing a non-judgemental space to talk about these risks and forming communal values modelled on social-emotional learning and empathy. At Just.Play we believe that there must be zero gender and social barriers and this is something that we wish to inculcate in the future of our society through our activities. Just.Play works towards creating a sustainable and measurable impact among the youth through long-term interventions. We believe that with dynamic and highly responsive brains, adolescents actively begin to create their own identities that go on to have serious implications on their social and emotional development. By imparting life skills to these young individuals through the art of sports, and bringing together children of all genders, we aim to create this platform to communicate and generate ideas, socialize and upskill themselves.Three major components/ philosophies of ‘Project Disc In’ are:●      Mixed-gender, safe play areas●      Life Skill Education●      Pay it forward1.    Mixed-gender, safe play areas‘Project Disc In’, employs Ultimate Frisbee, a mixed-gender sport to create safe and non-judgmental play areas to bring together all genders to play, interact, and communicate with each other. Outward exposure through the sport will help children to get to know and be inspired by people around them, fostering team bonding and healthy competition.Ultimate Frisbee is a self-referred, non-contact sport that is played with a frisbee disc. This team sport includes elements of basketball, football, and rugby. With utmost importance being given to the ‘Spirit of the Game’, the sport imparts life skills such as fairness, active communication, conflict resolution, etc. to the players. 2.    Life Skill EducationThe second component of the project anchors the whole vision of Just.Play. The inherent nature of Ultimate Frisbee and the Just.Play curriculum facilitates life skill education for the citizens of tomorrow. ‘Spirit of the Game’ of Ultimate Frisbee ensures that players inculcate skills like active listening, active communication, conflict resolution, etc. during game time. Just.Play modules based on the Social Emotional Ethical Learning (SEEL) curriculum, developed by contextualizing the Life Skills Framework by UNICEF India and the discussions in and out of spirit circles impart 21st-century life skills to participants. There will be a special focus on Gender, Sex &amp; Relationship Education as well to break the existing barriers to a ‘Just’ society.3.    Pay it forwardThis third component of the project aims to equip children with the resources and skills to initiate changes in their communities. The session approach is designed in such a way that participants gain a sense of responsibility, cultivate skills in citizenship, creative thinking and entrepreneurial skills practically, and develop problem-solving skills. Each session is designed to equip them with skills to take up community projects as well as to showcase exemplary leadership qualities in their lives.Throughout the project period, participants will be empowered to take up projects to address a pressing social issue that they observe around them through a step-by-step process with mentorship and support to be young changemakers. During the intervention period and after the project, youth leaders will be identified from the participants to impart their learnings and skills to children from other project areas.We are at present running our program at 4 centres for 350 children. Why does Just.Play, a Non profit have to organise an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament?<ul><li>The children who we engage with are mostly from underprivileged sections of the society and get limited exposure to meet and learn from people outside their immediate community.</li><li>We have been engaging with the children for over a year and have been imparting several life skills. But do we have enough opportunities to make practical use of these 21st venture life skills?</li><li>People from all genders and not treated equally in society. How can we do it via a frisbee tournament?</li><li>There are several players who play Ultimate Frisbee and other sports in the state. But all players are scattered and there is limited opportunities to come together.</li></ul>

As seasoned players now, they will be mentoring and leading teams, communicating with external stakeholders and will come back with a whole new set of learnings. ~ We believe in Ultimate Frisbee as an agency for change in our society. As a self-refereed and mixed-gender sport, this game leaves its players with a renewed sense of self-respect and appreciation for co-players. Furthermore, nearly all the participants of this tournament will be experiencing a competitive mixed-gender sport for the very first time in their lives! This demonstrably facilitates dialogue and positively affects gender perceptions.~ The tournament would see several players from across the state and country get together for the first time, and even a few players touching a frisbee for the very first time. It would be the best start to a flourishing and wholesome ultimate Frisbee community from Kerala.
