And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Founded in November 2002, KSV is located in a quiet valley near the city of Dharwad in Karnataka, South India. Established on three acres of land a short distance from Kalkeri Village, the school consists of simple buildings made from traditional materials. In this peaceful setting, the children enjoy the tranquility necessary for their academic studies, music practice and performing arts activities.KSV provides education in academic subjects, Hindustani Classical Music, Bharatanatayam Dance and Drama. In addition, food, accommodation and healthcare are all provided free of cost. There are no fees at all !KSV is both traditional and modern in its approach. Tradition is taught through the ancient disciplines of the Indian classical arts. The modern educational programme is based on the Karnataka State syllabus. Computer studies are also an important element to prepare the students to meet the demands of today’s rapidly evolving world.The origins of KSV were basic but clear: through the medium of traditional Indian music combined with regular schooling, the lives of disadvantaged children could be transformed. For many of these children no formal education was available, so the first step was to set up a favourable learning environment for them. Teaching and guidance provided by a team of dedicated professionals then gave these children the ability and confidence to stand on their own two feet, ensuring that in time they will become creative and resourceful citizens of the world.

Sharda is 14, the youngest of four children, and belongs to the Lamani/Banjara community, which is classified as a scheduled caste by the Indian Government. Before joining Kalkeri Sangeet Vidyalaya (KSV) in 2003, Sharda had never experienced a regular school day and consequently, couldn’t read, write or count. Furthermore, her family faced many daily challenges, which meant she rarely enjoyed three meals a day. Before joining KSV, her days were spent tending the family’s flock of goats with her sister.

Since arriving at KSV, Sharda has excelled in both her academic and music studies. Not only does she receive a good education, but also three healthy, nutritious meals each day.

Sharda is now in the 9th standard and has passed the Government Junior Music Exam and the 3rd level exam with the nationally recognised Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. Sharda has gone from being a quiet girl with few opportunities, to a confident young person with outstanding singing abilities and impressive academic success with an 82% average in 2010/11.

All these factors have opened up a world of opportunity to Sharda to secure a better and brighter future. Upon completion of her school education Sharda has ambitions to go on to university to study music.

Other than the music and primary education offered at our residential school, it is important to provide health facilities, clean, filtered drinking water and nutritious meals to the 200 children staying with us.These children have limited means and come from disadvantaged backgrounds, which can lead to a certain level of malnourishment. It is essential to ensure that the school is fully-equipped to provide nutritious daily meals and clean safe drinking water on a daily basis. 
 We run a meal programme, three times a day, to ensure 200 children staying at our residential school live healthily. Any donations received will fund this programme and help to maintain our ethos.All of the children enrolled at our school belong to economically weaker sections of society and many come from tribal or scheduled caste communities. Only when children have a healthy mind and body will they be able to focus on their education. 
 This project will enable us to provide healthy and nutritious food, and clean and safe drinking water to around 200 children presently staying at our residential school in Kalkeri.With a donation of Rs. 825, you can sponsor a bright young student to ensure they receive a month of healthy meals.

 Indian tradition dictates that offering knowledge to the less fortunate or feeding the needy are considered to be amongst the most pious of acts that one can undertake.KSV provides three vegetarian and nourishing meals a day to its two-hundred-thirty students.We need individuals to come forward to extend their support for Annadaan.We would like to raise the equivalent of a meal/ day for a year for the 220 students of the school 
 As a residential school, the health and welfare of the students is paramount. Three nutritious home-cooked South Indian vegetarian meals are provided every day.In total, the school’s kitchen staff caters for over 230 people per/meal every day.
