The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, and very limited access to healthcare and quality education”, says Bipin Dhane, founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. Many children face neglect, with parents consumed by substance abuse, leaving them to fend for themselves. As Asha explains, "Bare basics like food, shelter, and clothing are not available. "She wanted to study but was being forced into child marriage," Asha shares. Magic Bus intervened, rallying the women in the village to stop the wedding. "We told them this girl is a child herself. The wedding was canceled, and the girl continued her education.According to Asha, children from villages have a burning desire to study and make a successful life for themselves but very rarely do these dreams come true. "There is a boy in our programme. Despite being alone, he studies, does all the housework, and looks after his younger siblings," Asha recounts. When his parents tried to take him and his siblings to work at a brick kiln, the boy resisted, saying, "I want to study and I want my young siblings to study as well."Why Education MattersEducation is the key to breaking the cycle of generational poverty. The Kalpakta Education Foundation (Kalpakta) was set up in July 2020 to explore the importance of dialogue in Education. We work with the children and teachers, through the community library and school program. “Our vision is to foster critical and creative thinking in children through a culture of reading” and “Our mission is to help children develop strong reading habits and essential literacy skills for a lifetime of learning and opportunities”.During the COVID-19 pandemic, our organization took root with a deep concern for the education of rural children, who lacked the resources available to their urban counterparts. Determined to find a solution, we embarked on a journey to create a better way for these underprivileged children. It all began with a humble reading room, which we proudly named "Kalpakta" to signify our success. As time passed, the number of students grew, and now, we stand here, a testament to the power of compassion and dedicated efforts in transforming lives through education.Currently, we run two impactful programs: one for the Language and another for the Library. Our organization's belief is that engaging with reading not only fosters critical and creative thinking but also equips children to make better decisions in their daily lives. This engagement enables them to develop sensitivity to their social and personal surroundings, empowering them to relate effectively to themselves and the wider world.Language Program: In many government schools, there are no active libraries, and students are mostly limited to the content available in their respective school textbooks. As a result, children lack exposure to children's storybooks and literature, leading to difficulties in achieving necessary reading fluency, comprehension, and foundational literacy. Engaging with literature is vital for children to develop good language skills.Library Program: Library in School: We are setting up libraries in schools to provide children with easy access to storybooks. Engaging activities like read-aloud, book talks, and storytelling help encourage children to read and build their confidence. Additionally, we are training teachers to manage the school libraries after our intervention independently. Our aim is to help children think through stories and connect them with their life experiences. According to Gordon Wells, understanding our world through storytelling is essential to all aspects of learning, as stories about events and people allow us to gain insights into ourselves and our world.Community Library: Our community library operates between Monday to Saturday, welcoming children at any time to read and borrow books. With a focus on developing language skills and fostering reading habits, till now we have served 500+ children in our reading room. Additionally, we plan to expand our library's book collection to ensure sustained engagement with the children.
