If they are ill or injured, they are never given treatment. They are tied up in small spaces. Where there is space barely for 10, they keep 20, 30 or even 40 animals. And these animals spend their entire life in these painful conditions", says Dr Asher Jesudoss, animal welfare activist, who fights against the abuse of farmed animals.According to him, several crude, illegal and violent methods/practices are used to extract milk from cattle, which leave thousands with illnesses. “Labour pains are induced in cattle by injecting drugs; they are made to forcefully let down milk twice a day unnaturally. Their calves are pulled away and are not allowed to drink their mother’s milk. Cattle, bred for profit and abandoned after they stop producing milk, are often found malnourished, injured or sick on city streets. Many face bitter winters, starvation and death in road accidents - a sad fate for cows in a country where they are revered by lakhs of people. To save cows from such a sad end, Swami Ishwar Das started Shree Krishnayan Desi Gaushala, currently home to 18,000+ abandoned cows. But with the rising costs of fodder and medicines, he is struggling to provide the quality of care such mistreated animals deserve. “It was in 2010 when I witnessed abandoned cows from the streets in Uttarakhand being transported in a truck. The cows were administered anesthesia and stacked one above the other like lifeless goods. When me and a few of my acquaintances brought the cows off the truck, two of them died before my eyes and that sight shook me to the core. It was then that I started Shree Krishnayan Gaushala with 11 abandoned cows in a small donated land,” says Swami Ishwar Das.Swami Ishwar Das is unable to bear the rising cost of nutrition and medical care for injured cows and needs support to continue to save these voiceless animals. Karma Foundation is founded by visionaries who felt the need to build a free of cost medical facility for stray animals where the best, most advanced, ethical and highly skilled medical care is readily available.We, at Karma Foundation truly believe that animals are the real victims on earth. They didn’t declare war, they don’t have weapons and they don’t want to destroy humans or impose their religion. Their only “crime” is that they exist. Keeping the ever-rising cases of accidents, cruelty, starvation, illnesses and so on, we have built an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Operation Theatre (OT) &amp; Out Patient Department (OPD) for such animals who suffer each day on the streets of the city.Our current set-up in Pune City is our pilot model. We plan to expand our horizon by working on building a larger unit for farm animals, a sanctuary for the old and discarded and a shelter home for the ones who cannot survive on the streets of the city.

Day in and day out stray animals are subjected to cruelty, illnesses and accidents. Most of these animals meet an ill fate and die due to these injuries or sicknesses. A citizen that has the will to help such animals is usually restrained by the availability of funds and resource due to which timely and correct relief cannot be provided ultimately leading to a suffering death. To tackle this problem we have started Karma Foundation which is a fully functional, fully equipped charitable animal hospital with OPD (Out Patient Department) and IPD (In-Patient Department) facilities. Our hospital can offer medical assistance to 500 animals each month by providing them with the necessary treatment and hospitalization if required. Being a medical facility our expenses are very high and we are struggling with that. We wish to create an ecosystem where humans and animals can peacefully coexist and no life passes due to the unavailability of resources. Animals were domesticated by humans 1000's of years back for personal benefit and hence it is the responsibility of the entire humankind to ensure their peaceful existence.
