“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. While Covid-19 impacted everyone’s lives across the society, children in rural part of India were amongst those, who were hit hardest by it. Indian education system saw a compulsive shift and many schools especially in urban areas took recourse using online platform. However, for children studying in rural areas this seemed to be a distant dream. Almost 2 million children are adversely affected and were cut off from the education system pushing them further behind and risking their future. Although, mobile and internet penetration has increased in rural areas yet for many parents and children coming from week socio-economic class, accessing online education is technically challenging and financially unaffordable.Education empowers an individual to earn her/his livelihood, increases awareness on a range of issues – social behaviour to understanding one’ rights, and to become a better citizen.Therefore, to facilitate for accessing education to vulnerable children and to fill the void, KF has started schools in rural areas of Bihar. So far, two schools are successfully running in Mahmadpur village of Nalanda district in Bihar, India providing education to approx. 200 children.Encouraged by the positive response in the two schools and looking at the immediate need we are expanding this initiative to reach out to 7,000 more children in Bihar. We, therefore, invite you to be part of this noble cause and donate to educate children, bridging the growing rural -urban divide and contribute to make world a better place to live. 
 To reach 7,000 students in 50 villages of Bihar, KF needs your support in hiring volunteer youth teachers, who will be teaching the students from Class 1-7. Providing education in rural areas

Bihar is home to around 33 million poor and is one of the poorest states as well. In the midst of the ongoing Covid 19 crisis, Bihar is struggling to pool in adequate resources for facing the pandemic confidently. Half of the Bihar households are dependent on remittances from their migrant family members, which currently stand lost or suspended. A vast number of these migrants themselves are in transit, lost their jobs, incomes and are at a very high risk of contracting the infection. Talking of the poor residing in Bihar, the existing safety nets for the poorest and most vulnerable are not operational currently, complicated by the immobility, distancing and isolation requirements for Covid prevention. It is resulting in unprecedented marginalization of the poor and other disadvantaged groups. This situation is also a huge threat to the agricultural food production and supply chain of Bihar that is the mainstay for a majority of the population.Key solutions to these problems lie in some of the steps taken by Kaushalya Foundation in Bihar that is providing immediate humanitarian assistance and health &amp; livelihood related support to the poor and the most vulnerable, reaching out to 10,00,000 people directly in Bihar. 
 The main action points for fighting Covid 19 in Bihar are: 1. ) Address the immediate hunger and food crisis: <ul><li>25000 children, old aged people and adults from 5000 most vulnerable families are directly provided food security, safety and hygiene materials</li></ul>Work with government to help vulnerable families connect with government benefits announced for COVID 2. ) Sharing and Managing Information:<ul><li>Dissemination of information about COVID-19 prevention will reach 10,00,000 rural and urban dwellers through messaging and calls, and other modes of communication for preventive measures.</li><li>Information to 50,000 farmers about the safe agriculture practices to continue economic activities reducing income losses and saving 50,000 small and marginal farmers from severe economic distress</li><li>KF - COVID Helpline – to target the outreach activities</li><li>The MIS maintained in collaboration of Primary Health Centre (PHC) will help to manage the infection and possible spread. Availability of first hand data will be valuable for further research and action.</li></ul>3. ) Managing the health crisis at village/community level:Management of isolation centres in selected villages for migrants-in-transit for dignified stay with food and care without social ostracisation, arrangement of transportation for emergencies, monitoring the health of community members and migrants.  
 With the necessary support, we can carry out our intervention under the heads mentioned above to impact and save lives.

More than half of the households in Bihar depend on remittances for their sustenance. While male members of the families migrate to more developed locations, women stay back in the villages and manage the household on remittance money sent by the male earning members of the family and small income from farming small patches of land (one tenth to one fifth of acre).Due to the COVID necessitated lockdown in India, there is a loss in incomes of the migrant workers and hence, loss of remittances for their families too. 60% of these families belong to below poverty line who do not have any significant savings or alternate source of income. 80% of these families are unable to farm the land as they do not have money to buy farm inputs like seeds, fertilizers etc.Nawada district, where the project will be implemented, is the second poorest district of Bihar. The district falls under agro-climatic zone III B (South Bihar Alluvial Plane zone) and the area is characterized by poor agriculture development or farming practices, lack of rural financing or credit facilities, poor agriculture extension services and poor infrastructure services. 
 The organisation (KF) has been working in the proposed area of Sirdala and Mesakur blocks of Nawada district since 2014.Promotion of vegetable farming among women farmers can generate income plus provide nutrition to the family. The project is targeting those who either practice or have potential to do vegetable farming.<ul><li>Providing vegetable kit to women to farm 2000 sq. ft. of land roughly 1.5 katha ( 1 kattha = 0.03 acre) : Woman farmers shall be provided vegetable kits which shall have vegetables seeds (Tomato, Chilli, Brinjal, Gourds, Ladyfinger, Cauliflower, cabbage) and fertilizers needed for cultivating. </li><li>Training on sustainable vegetable farming - The content of these would include a selection of seed, seed treatment, nursery preparation, field preparation, integrated nutrient management INM (Integrated Nutrient Management) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM).</li><li>Providing plastic crates and creating market linkages- Every women farmers shall be provided 2 plastic crates of 20 kg capacity. Plastic crates shall reduce the post-harvest losses in handling and transportation. Surplus vegetables produced shall be transported to the nearest mandi located in Nawada town. Transport facilities shall be arranged to facilitate the transportation.</li></ul> 
 <ul><li>At least 50% of 2000 women farmers are targeted to start the farming of vegetables</li><li>The agriculture income has increased by at least 30% for 2/3rd of 2000 women farmers</li><li>Per hectare production increased by 15%-20% of at least 2/3rd of 2000 women farmers</li><li>At least 50 % women vegetable producers have increased access to the market.</li><li>At least 50 % women (of 2000 women producers) vegetable producers are trained of which at least 2/3rd are practicing sustainable agriculture. </li><li>At least 50% of the 2000 women explain that they consume regularly fresh vegetables from their home-production. This will add to their nutrition diet.</li></ul>
