KIDPOWER India is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating safer communities. Kidpower India provides training in safety skills to children, teens, and adults. The training teaches how to stay safe, protect oneself and others, and increase self-confidence in any situation. The methods effectively prevent bullying, create awareness about strangers, abuse prevention, and personal safety. Kidpower India is the local centre of Kidpower Teenpower and Fullpower International.Kidpower also focuses on children in difficult situations by providing them with education support, safety training, and other intervention that will help them continue their education and have a better future. In partnership with around 20 low costs schools, we provide 200 scholarships for girls from poor families to continue their education every year. Another important work of Kidpower India is the Manasu children's home where we provide comprehensive care for orphan and vulnerable children. We also work in 5 slums to prevent child labour and ensure that the children go to school by running bridge schools and vocational training. In these communities, we are also working hard to help people and groups whose situation has become vulnerable because of COVID-19.

Eleven-year-old Monika lives with her parents and her two sisters. Her father, Srinivas, is a trained electrician, working at a port. However, his wage not only supported his wife and daughters but also the cancer treatment his father needed, as well as his sister’s wedding ceremony. Consequently, Srinivas was forced to borrow money that he would never be in a position to repay.

With astronomical debts weighing on his pocket and his conscience, Srinivas suffered a mental breakdown. What’s worse, he could no longer work, adding further pressure to his financial situation. As a result, Monika and her younger sister stopped going to school for two years. Kidpower intervened, paid Rs.3000 for a month of their education, and provided them with the equipment they would need to thrive. Now Monika is enjoying learning and socialising with other children at her school alongside her sister.

In our society, we need to work a lot more harder in order to ensure the safety of our girls. Every day, many children and young girls run away from their homes because of poverty, abuse and other reasons. Young girls are sometimes cheated in the name of love or marriage.These children are becoming an easy prey to those people who see them as an economic resource. Many a times, we are capable of preventing such onslaughts on children However, the probability of rescuing children from the claws of trafficking is very low. 
 Manasu centre is the only girl-child centric centre in the city of Visakhapatnam. It provides for their accomodation (short or long), food and health care, counselling, formal, non-formal education and vocational training. The centre has the capacity to accommodate up to 45 children. The centre believes that home care is the best care and tries to integrate the child back into their family. However, in cases where children could not be integrate back into their homes because of an abusive environment at home, in such cases, the home provides for the education and vocational training support to the girl child. 
 The goal of Manasu Girl Care Centre to ensure a better future for the vulnerable girl child, and also to provide permanent shelter for children where integration with the family is not possible.Manasu Girl Care Centre provides for education for girls from vulnerable situations (orphans, abused, run away from home etc.). The center provides the facilities for stay, (short or long), food and health care, counselling, formal education and vocational training. The center has capacity to accommodate up to 45 children. Every year, 10-15 children are integrated back into the family. About 30 children are provided education in a private school. Some of the children have completed their schooling and are now studying Engineering, Nursing and other courses.

In our work, we came across many children who work as rag pickers/beggars. These are the children who do not have family or were abandoned or have a very broken family relation. Those are the street children who work and spend most of their time on the street. We strongly believe in the need to work with this group and help them to get back to education or better work conditions. Over the last few months, we have interacted with a number of street children to understand their personal situations, occupation and needs/aspirations. Based on the study and discussion with the street children, we have developed the program intervention. There will be a need for a home which caters to both temporary/ permanent stays. The home will be the centre for a wide range of activities/ services like education, vocational training, counselling etc. The focus of the program will be to work with different stakeholders to identify and work with children who run away from home.  
 For the last 15 years, Kidpower India is running a girl home for vulnerable girl children in Visakhapatnam. The home provides many facilities like safe stay, education, vocational training, etc. Manasu Home got good recognition and reputation in Visakhapatnam. In the hope to extend the same services, we have started Manasu boys home this year. Currently, 10 children are staying and by next year, we want to support 40 boys. 
 The focus is to bring the children out of rag-picking/ begging/ other dangerous occupations and to send them back to school. in this way the children will have a bright future.

In 2011, India’s female literacy rate stood at 65%, almost 20% lower than men at 82%. Out of every 100 Indian children who drop out of school, 66 of them are girls. Archaic attitudes towards women within many Indian communities is largely to blame for these figures. 
 In order to help raise such dismal female literacy rates, Kidpower gives scholarships to young girls and financially supports their academic careers. We do this through a network of schools catering to children living in slums in Visakhapatnam. Initially we identify those who have been forced to abandon their education because their families can’t afford the costs incurred. Our staff then regularly make school and home visits to ensure girls aren’t in danger of dropping out and are encouraged with their studies. 
 So far we have provided scholarships to 200 girls from more than 15 schools; with your help we can create a brighter future for many more.

Support 100 girls through a year of school

The child labor situation is getting worse in rag picking community of Visakhapatnam because of the closed schools and poverty. In the rag-picking community, men go for rag-picking while women mostly go for selling broomsticks or collect hair from households in exchange for fancy items. The rag Pickers were able to work only for 4 months in the last 1 year because of the COVI19 restrictions. While they are struggling to meet basic needs, the second wave of COVID19 has hit them hard. Many people have to borrow a large amount of money for the treatment of a family member. The high debts and less income are forcing the children of the families into work. Many boys of 10-12 years are accompanying their parents for rag picking. While young girls are accompanying their mothers for work. While a year back some of these children were either going to school or coming to the child labor school in preparation for joining at school. Rag picking is classified as a hazardous activity for children below 14 years, under Indian law. Imagine a child has to walk long distances, putting the hands and searching for plastic in hazardous and filthy waste.  
 Kidpower India is running Hope and LG Bridge Schools in the slums of Visakhapatnam with the aim of preventing child labor. Children who go to work or stay at home without working are motivated to join the bridge schools. Most of the parents of the children are rag-pickers. The Children are taught alphabets in Telugu, English, numbers, numbers in words, basic clean habits, etc. The syllabus consists of topics from Kindergarten to Grade 2 and prepares the child to join in regular school.After completion of the bridge school, the children will be joined into government or private schools. Because of the COVID19 pandemic, the children will fail to make this transition from bridge school to regular school. They will end up joining their parents at work. Though children going to rag-picking is hazardous and is banned by the government. It is difficult to prevent because the children work with their parents. Half of the income, the child gives to the parent, and the remaining the child is allowed to spend on his own. By providing scholarships Kidpower aims to send the children who study well to low-cost private schools and prevent them from becoming rag pickers.  
 Scholarships for poor deserving students are a sound investment for the future generation. The children will continue their education and have a better future. They will not drop out of school and become child labor. James Tootely in his book, "The beautiful Tree‟ prescribes a similar approach to educate the poor children and calls it "targeted vouchers for the poorest. Studies from Hyderabad and Delhi, show that children's learning is also better in low-cost private schools. Our own experience also indicates this is an effective method for ensuring children stay in school and get a better education. In the last few years, we are able to successfully enroll more than 100 children in various government and private schools. Because of the COVID19 pandemic, the families are struggling to meet the basic needs of the families because of the COVID19. Most of the families will not be able to support the children's education. Also, the schools are closed which made the children easily vulnerable to be convinced to join their parents. By providing scholarships to low-cost private schools we can ensure that the child completed his education and does not become a rag picker.
