Going by the belief that every child has a right to education, the Kriti Scholarship Program identifies children who are at the risk of dropping out of schools and provides them with financial assistance and mentoring to ensure they complete education till at least Xth grade. We find that the government is not investing enough in education. Despite targets to set up schools under RTE, the number of government schools is inadequate to meet the needs of the large number of people in slums in Hyderabad. In the Film Nagar slums alone, for a population of 5000 - 6000 families, the government schools only have a capacity for 1500 children at primary level and 1500 children at the high school level. This is far below the requirement. Hence, 80% of the children are studying in private schools and the school fees for these schools is a significant burden for the family. 
 Kriti identifies families where the parents are very interested in educating their children and have educated them to some level. However, due to a tough financial situation, they are not able to manage the fees anymore and the children are at a risk of dropping out of schools. This is a program with no overheads – all donations received go directly towards the school fees. The selection of children, administration of disbursements, regular meetings with the children is done entirely through volunteer efforts. The program started in 2010 with around 30 kids and currently provides financial assistance to over 350 children from the poorest families in the slums. 
 Over the past 8 years in the existence of this program, we have helped over 250 children finish grade 10 (Telangana SSC Exam). We have also had 2 children finish Engineering and Nursing and 3 children graduate with various degrees. Through our successful mentoring program, we impact about 200 children each year, helping tune their career choices and helping them aspire to do better in their studies.

Project Disha - Scholarship Program for the Underprivileged

Physical education is an important aspect of a child’s holistic education. It lays the foundation for a healthy active life for the child, while at the same time, encourages healthy social and interpersonal behaviour. Physical activity also encourages and stimulates a child so that they become active learners in the classroom. Physical activity and sports are often neglected in classrooms, especially for children from poor communities. It is often the first aspect of education which is sacrificed in the face of a resource constraint. Kriti is working with 10 government schools in the Sheikpet Mandal in Hyderabad on improving teacher: student ratio and bridging the infrastructure gaps. In most schools, we have seen that there is no physical activity for children at all. Even after they go home, children living in slums have no space or opportunity for physical play. This is leading to health issues, overuse of television and phones as means of entertainment, and reduced concentration in class. 
 Kriti is establishing a sports program in government schools to ensure that each child gets atleast a 45 minute sports period three days a week. A trained instructor conducts the class which includes a mix of exercise and ball games. In some of the schools, a sports area or ground was available (nearby GHMC grounds), but in some schools we have helped to create the space. In one school, a play area has been created on the roof by providing a high wire netting around the walls. In addition to exercise and ball games, older children are also taught sports. The children are encouraged to participate in inter school tournaments to get more exposure. Sports equipment such as balls, basket ball rings etc are provided to the schools. Project Champion is currently operational in five out of the 10 schools that we are supporting. There is a requirement from the schools to expand the program and we are looking for funds to continue this project in coming years. 
 Sports helps children to improve their agility, balance, speed, endurance and focus. Children enjoy coming to school more and we have found the number of enrolments increasing in all the schools which are a part of Project Champion. IN the six months since Project Champion started, children have participated in two inter-school competitions. During the summer holidays, Hyderabad Runners has gotten involved and conducted summer camp for the children focussing on encouraging them to run. The camp will culminate in all the children taking part in a 4k run. The project is already running in five schools and we are seeking funds to continue this program in the academic year of 2018-19. The program benefits 1600 children.

Environment is an all-encompassing subject and Women &amp; Children need to be educated about various aspects of Environment. With rampant negligence and ignorance, humanity is taking for granted the natural resources resulting in an ecology that is on the brink of collapse. A large part of the consequences of Anthropocene actions are not reversible. The future of the present and future generations is at stake as we are facing issues like water scarcity, pollution of land, air and water, unknown and new deceases, alienation from the Nature, food shortages, erratic weather events, deteriorating climate condition etc., We are the last generation that can do something about the appalling situation and restore it to a status where survival of life is again possible. Protecting the Environment is the duty of all. 
 Cinema being the most powerful medium, is the best tool to spread awareness. 4th BEFF Babul Eco Film Festival has to sections [1] for screening of acclaimed international and national eco films and [2] a short film contest on the topic PLASTIC POLLUTION. BEFF is the 3rd major environmental film festival of India and provides opportunity to take your films to the discerning audience of HYDERABAD, the two Telegu speaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and India in general. BEFF main and the follow-up travelling film festivals enlighten the ignorant and psh the aware audience towards action. The short film contest of less than 5 min duration on the topic of PLASTIC MENACE will bring the much-needed exposure to the different ecological issues among the youth. The multiple curtain raiser events leading to the festival will bring direct and indict awareness to the people of all walks of life. 
 At the core of all the environmental issues is either lack of knowledge or carelessness. And awareness is the first step towards action to protect Nature. This will bring a slow but steady change in the collective thinking of common people, the politicians, bureaucrats, business persons, women, children, youth etc., Hyderabad being an important metro of India with lots of cities in the surrounding areas, BEFF will impact the policy, legislation and implementation for a development that is sustainable. Also BEFF is complimented by social media campaigns and other community events for environmental awareness. INDIA is a vast country in the developing phase and BEFF puts together the latest eco films from across the world – from the developed nations, the less developed nations, the island nations – for a better understanding of the obtaining climate issues leading to practical solutions.
