For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. ImpactMission End Period Poverty: From ‘Kapda’ to ‘Cup’The Change Agents Movement, Lal Sakhi’s plan of action to bring about a qualitative shift in the lives of women in corners of rural/tribal India; through aiding in enhancing menstrual hygiene. Though discussions have been long going on the issue, there still is a lot of ground to cover to bring parity in the lives of these women vis-a-vis menstrual hygiene.Through this movement, our Change Agents (community influencers) who become resource persons that share their experience of using hygienic menstrual products with other rural women and motivate and train them to use the same. The Agents provide free counseling and menstrual cups to women who can not afford it. In Kharpa, Bhopal we have helped create a hygiene culture where more than 90% Rural women are using sustainable and environment-friendly menstrual cups made of medical grade silicon. This framework is self-sustaining as the people who are internal to these societies are initiating the change and therefore this requires just firing up the momentum.A menstrual cup is a type of reusable feminine hygiene product. It’s a small, flexible funnel-shaped cup made of medical grade rubber or silicone that one uses during menstruation. Almost 88% of women and girls in India use homemade alternatives, such as old cloth, rags, hay, sand, or ash which may have health repercussions. These homemade alternatives are used owing to lack of access to menstrual products, socioeconomic conditions, and lack of awareness. We aim to be one of the drivers to change this, we have distributed more than 1000 menstrual cups for free with proper counseling. ‘Period Poverty’About 336 million girls/women experience menstruation in India, out of which approximately 121 million use disposable sanitary napkins. In India, only 36% of women/girls have access to safe menstrual hygiene products. The rest of these women (64%) are at risk of developing serious health problems as a result of using several homegrown alternatives, such as hay, dried leaves, old rugs, ashes and used clothes during their periods. <a href="https://swachhindia.ndtv.com/menstrual-hygiene-day-facts-26-percent-use-sanitary-pads-periods-34309/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">Report attached here</a>.The first challenge is that more than 64% of women and girls in India do not have access to safe menstrual hygiene products to manage menstruation, these women /girls are suffering from poor menstrual hygiene practices because they cannot afford the cost of menstrual products due to economic reasons. This particular condition is defined as ‘Period Poverty’
