In the dark and dingy alleys of red light areas, injustice, pain and suffering run rampant. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, Of the 250 the children rescued from abuse and exploitation, around 70 of them are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. His NGO Snehalaya to date has transformed the lives of millions. Girish’s work is crucial for the survival and safety of vulnerable children of sex workers. Young daughters of sex workers are made to watch their mothers being raped, are brutally assaulted and forced into sex work. Moreover, a good number of children rescued by Girish are diagnosed HIV positive. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. Latika Roy Memorial Foundation (LRF), registered under the Societies Act of 1860, has been a force for inclusion in India for nearly 30 years. Founded in 1994 and based in Dehradun, we work with disabled children, young adults and their families. We provide creative diagnostics, education and therapy to children and adults, focusing on the poor, but open to all. Our seven centres – Gubbara, the Early Intervention Center, Karuna Vihar Special School, the Child Development Center, the Center for Vocational Training, Latika Vihar, and the Resource Center – cater to anyone with a disability, from infants to adults, and their families.

There are over 200 million disabled people in India, of which about 65 million are children. But where are they all? How often do we see a child with cerebral palsy at a mainstream school? An adult with Down Syndrome on a bus? An autistic woman in the workplace? Close to never. Because disabled children and adults are systematically discriminated against. Schools aren’t equipped to accommodate them. Public spaces are inaccessible. Employers turn them away. They are taunted, bullied and ignored. While the Rights of People with Disabilities Act, 2016, ensures equal rights and prohibits discrimination against disabled people, their mobility, access to education, employment, healthcare, and opportunities for political and economic empowerment are routinely stymied. When such a huge population is marginalized, the under-developed human capital, loss of productivity and the knock-on effects for their families and communities hit the entire country. 
 The Latika Roy Foundation (LRF), commended by UNESCO, Dasra, the Government of India, CNN-IBN and our many peers in the field, has worked for nearly 30 years out of rented premises. These have been built to house families, not hundreds of disabled children. Our kids deserve better. We’re now ready to construct our own purpose-built building in the heart of Dehradun. The first of its kind in India, it will be built to universal accessibility standards. We will have, for the first time, specialized equipment and playgrounds, customized lighting, wide doorways and ramps up to the roof, among many other state-of-the-art features. The total cost of the proposed building is Rs 25 crore. Our design partner is Pradeep Sachdeva Design Associates, one of India’s leading architectural firms with an extensive portfolio of projects and deep expertise in designing public spaces; pro-bono project management will be provided by Cushman &amp; Wakefield, a global leader in real estate services with a presence in over 60 countries. We already have over 10 crores from companies and philanthropists who recognize the importance of our work. Our #1000Dreams fundraiser is for individuals who understand the power of collective action: we’re looking for 1,000 leaders who share our grand vision to contribute Rs 1,00,000 each - their combined donations will finance an entire floor.  
 Our proposed building will be much more than a building – it will stand tall and proud as a symbol of what’s possible when disabled people are part of the plan. It’s time for India to embrace inclusion, time for disabled people to take the lead, and time for disability to be on the national agenda. By gifting one lakh either individually or as part of a group, donors will take their place among other visionaries who share a bold and world-changing dream: inclusion for everyone, and progress for all.
