Osmanabad district is a part of Aurangabad division of Maharashtra state. The district is a part of the Marathwada region, historically known for its backwardness and low literacy rate. In recent years, the district has levelled up its literacy rate in comparison to the other districts of the region, but it is still far behind the state literacy rate.Secondary education: The secondary level of education is more neglected in the district and there are fewer schools than needed. At present, the schools are not over crowded as there is only 62 percent net enrolment in secondary education and 38 percent children have either not enrolled in school or dropped out in the process. The net enrolment falls further at the higher secondary level.The drop-out rate in Osmanabad District is quite high and gradually increases as increase in levels of education. The possible selection of the Tehsils for intervention of Anando is done on the basis of backwardness of the said tehsil. The two tehsils selected based of these factors are Washi, the most backward tehsil of the district which has no urban areas at all and the population of the tehsil migrate for seasonal work to other parts of Maharashtra, and Kalamb Tehsil which also has a high migration rate to the cities.

Rural women depend on agriculture for survival. While land is a crucial economic asset, very few own lands and hence work in cheap labour intensive activities. Without money and a livelihood they have no voice. Traditionally too, women have been denied basic education and have never been given a chance to be the decision-maker. 
 The Jagruti program of Light of Life Trust is focused on providing a sustainable livelihood to 260 women from Murbad Village in Thane district of Maharashtra. The program is equipping underprivileged women and girls to develop creative skills like Sewing, Beauty Training which can be used to generate money from the sale of the products created and services rendered. Once earning, they can supplement the household income and become providers for the family.The program has been developed keeping in mind the needs of women, their aspirations and the cultural and family context that they come from. Firstly they are exposed to the knowledge and practice of beautician's work, sewing and tailoring, through customized vocational courses. Practical sessions help them to hone their skills more effectively. An entrepreneurship program helps them to look at their craft with a small scale business-like approach. 
 We seek to make skills-training easily accessible and usable for these underprivileged women in Murbad. Our experience in the interventions conducted in other centres shows us that when women learn they make progress in their thinking and they take along not only their families but the community too. Their learning and aspirations, once skilled, inspire other women to think about these opportunities that can change their day to day existence.
