If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. In the dark and dingy alleys of red light areas, injustice, pain and suffering run rampant. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, 250 of the children rescued from abuse and exploitation are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. Differently Abled

A not-for-profit organisation started in 1992,which has been providing remedial help and support to children with learning disabilities like dyslexia, and their parents as well as spreading awareness to the community at large, helping schools to set up Resource Rooms and conduct teacher training programmes. Around 40,000 children have benefitted from various activities of MDA in the past 21 years. MDA has designed and developed a range of awareness and remedial training programs for helping dyslexic children and is ready to share all its knowledge and expertise in the areas of identification, assessment, remediation techniques, and teacher training to overcome this learning difficulty. Soon, our one week training programme will be available online in digitised format.We also offer after-school remediation help at our premises. MDA also runs a full time remediation centre called ANANYA for children who need a pull out programme. MDA has also devised a remediation programme in Tamil. Our aim is to create a dyslexia sensitive society.

Dyslexia is an invisible disability. This means that dyslexics look completely normal to others, while they are not able to learn in traditional methods of learning. They do learn and understand, but differently.The reason is a neurological condition. In layman’s language we could say that the wiring in their brain is a bit different and therefore they perceive and process information differently. It affects primarily the area of written language ie; reading, writing and spelling and sometimes in arithmetic.Therefore there appears a gap between their potential, which they can achieve, and their performance. They often display special talents in areas that require high levels of visual, spatial, and motor integration and excel in fields of all kinds of designing, architecture, visual communication, direction, innovation, art, sculpture or even sports. It is a lifelong condition, but dyslexics, by virtue of their intelligence, learn to work their way around their difficulties. Some famous dyslexics are: Thomas Edison, Mohammad Ali, Picasso, Steven Spielberg, Steve Jobs, and Tom Cruise.These children, if identified early, can be trained to learn and eventually become productive members of the society. If they do not receive remediation, with their intelligence, they are at high risk of becoming juvenile delinquents. 
 Our activities are as follows:1.	We provide remediation to children at two centres. Ananya is a full time pull out centre where children are given intensive remediation. They are also exposed to co-curricular activities and occupational therapy to develop their motor skills. We also identify their dominant streak among multiple intelligences. The other centre is an after- school remediation centre which helps children from mainstream schools in bridging their gaps which may be lesser than those who need a pull out program.2.	We also train teachers in several of our training courses to deal and help children with specific learning disabilities to learn. Training happens at our training hall or at the premises of schools which require the training course. 3.	We help schools set up resource rooms where children can be given help within school premises.4.	The one week program will soon be available as an online course.5.	We conduct academic assessments of students. 6.	We are developing a software called Avance 360, which is a process workflow software. Analytics of this data can help the remedial teachers and give deeper insights into SLD. 7.	We have developed remediation program in Tamil also. 
 Each training course can accommodate 50 trainees. Each out of these 50 can impact at least 10 children in a year, resulting in 500 children receiving remediation per year after one batch of training alone.Remediation in our existing 41 resource rooms impact 35 to 40 children each year which amounts to around 1600 children.Our full time and part time remedial centres impact around 70 children per year. In a year assessments for more than 350 children are conducted.In all in a year we are able to impact around 2520 children. We have trained nearly 1000 teachers from all over Tamilnadu and the ripple effect has begun.We have impacted over 50000 children who have had difficulties in the past 21 years.With a contribution of Rs 100/- a child can be remediated.Anand was in class 4th but was only able to identify letters. He was not able to read words and was at least 4 grades below his age. His math skills were at class 1 level. He was given intensive remediation at Ananya. Within few years, Anand was able to adjust to the mainstream school he was readmitted to. Today, Anand is a confident interior designer and is eager to help other such children.

Dyslexia is a neurological condition which affects a child's ability to learn. The IQ of these children is average to above average with unique potentials, but they face difficulty in learning through standard methods. It is a life long condition which implies that even in adulthood, the dyslexic would have difficulties in reading, writing, spelling and Mathematics, apart from other executive functions. According to statistics, about 10 - 15% of the school going children have this condition in India. In Tamil Nadu alone, there are about 2 million children with dyslexia.Reading is the first step towards formal learning. Children with dyslexia could have a deficit in skills required to read, but strategies can be taught in a structured manner to overcome these deficits.MDA- Avaz reader app pops-up these strategies as hints when asked for. This helpline helps narrow the skill-gap for a struggling reader and gradually helps him to become an independent reader.MDA aims at taking this app to millions of people struggling to read due to learning difficulties. Conscious efforts have been taken to keep the cost low for the end-user; financial aid would ease it further. 
 MDA is dedicated to the task of helping a dyslexic through different stages of their life, from pre-primary to adulthood. MDA identifies at-risk children, builds up skills and empowers them with coping strategies throughout their educational journey. With an aim to provide sustained support for reading, a life skill, MDA has driven the development of a cost-effective reading app. It is designed and built by MDA in partnership with Invention Labs. The app uses state-of-the-art technology, works largely off-line and is based on the time-tested reading methodologies followed at MDA. As this app uses OCR technology, it and can be used to read any printed material.Cost and access are the typical barriers for any support system. The reader is available on the simplest Android device, be it a tablet or a mobile, making it affordable to a common man. Internet is required only for a few minutes to set up the content to be read. The support from the donors would help many children with Specific Learning Difficulty to subscribe to this reading app for the entire year. With sustained use of the MDA Avaz Reader, children who struggle with print become better at processing words and eventually become independent readers. 
 MDA Avaz reader is a low cost customisable app for reading. The internet is required only for certain preparatory activities. This makes it Internet safe for the child. MDA Avaz Reader is available on the simplest Android device, be it a tablet or a mobile. These two features make it affordable to a common man, enabling children with dyslexia to become an independent reader irrespective of their economic status. Additionally, the reinforcement model which is built into the app could reduce the need for external remedial support. This could reduce the financial load on the parents. As this app uses the OCR technology to translate the picture into a readable format, a child can use this app to read any printed material – newspapers, school text books and story books. This would develop a reading habit in a child, encouraging to use the appropriate strategies on demand;thereby helping the child to become an independent reader life- long.According to the latest survey there are about 35 million school going children with SLD. Nearly 70 to 80% percent of students diagnosed with Dyslexia have reading difficulty. MDA strives to provide support to this group through this reading app .
