"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. After being thrown out of their often abandoned by their own children and are forced to beg for food and shelter. “Through Project Jeevan, Maitri houses aging widow mothers in two ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund (Mathura), providing them with wellness and well-being. The programme also reaches out to widow mothers beyond the ashrams with fruit, milk and healthcare services,” explains Winnie Singh, co-founder and executive director, Maitri India.Save homeless elderly widows from begging on the streetsMost widows who make their way to Vrindavan are abandoned by their families, often after years of abuse. They come here hoping they will spend the rest of their days in prayer and devotion. But most live in impoverished conditions on the streets and in dingy rooms. Our main concern is to improve and increase the literacy among the girl children and access to quality education by the people from the marginalized section of society.The objective of the project is<ul><li> To provide quality education to girl child</li><li> To aware the parents of importance of educating a girl child</li><li> To promote the gender equity among the community</li><li> To ensure active participation of the community to make community an active partner</li><li> To network with private school and other education functionaries for providing the quality education services</li></ul>Naubatpur block of district Patna of state Bihar will be project area. The population of the proposed area is characterized by high level of illiteracy. This coupled with caste and gender dimensions pose a challenge towards ensuring education and social justice for all especially for women and girl child.The project area is characterized by a patriarchal system of society where women have little access to social resources including health, education and little decision-making power.The total literacy rate of Naubatpur block is 68.08% out of which male literacy rate is 64.88% and female literacy rate is 46.99%. Total population of Naubatpur block is 2,03,594 as per the census 2011. As per census 2011 out of total population, 12.3% people lives in urban areas while 87.7% lives in the rural area. 
 The main objective of the project is to provide prime education to 40 girl children through school. The girl children will complete the study of standard I to standard V i.e. each girl child will have to spend 5 years for completing her primary education from standard I to standard V. The other objective of the project is to promote gender equity through this project.The project will be implemented in 3 phases i.e., Phase I- Preparatory Stage (4 months), Phase II- Execution Stage (5 years) and Phase III- Evaluation stage (2 months).Under the preparatory stage a team will be built comprising of one coordinator, one counselor, and 2 community mobilizer and will be headed by senior program manager for overall guidance and management of the projects. The team will do the situation analysis of the 15 villages of Naubatpur block of state Patna and will select the 40 girl children from these villages. A maximum of 3 schools will be identified to absorb the 40 girl children. The program will be highlighted through awareness camps, community meetings, community events and IEC material. A monthly community meeting will be done for rapport building and active participation of community in the program. Different formats of records will be developed to keep the proper record of beneficiaries and inventory.Under the execution stage counselling of parents, girl child and community will be regularly done and the girl children will have to be admitted in identified school and will be provided required material like shoe, socks, book, notebook, pen etc along with admission and school monthly fees and bus fee will be provided.A proper monitoring of program will also be done. A‘Village Education Committee’ will be formed at village level to ensure community participation. The village education committee will be strengthened through meetings and training to develop their vision for the progress of quality education. Awareness campaign will be done regularly on monthly basis to aware the society of importance of girl child equation.Under phase III which is evaluation stage a post intervention situation analysis will be conducted to assess the impact of intervention of the program in Naubatpur block. The outcome will be shared with the concerned donor organization in form of reports. 
 Our intervention is expected to have the following impact<ul><li>The girl child will get quality education and will become inspiration for other girls and community to send their girl child to school</li><li>The community members will understand the importance of girl child education and will promote gender equity</li><li>More girl children will have readiness for higher education after completing their primary education</li><li>The girl children will have increased knowledge and skills</li><li>More girls will have impact of change in their values, attitude and behavior on their family, community and society</li><li>More parents will have increased awareness to send their children to school</li><li>There will be increased demand for and utilization of quality education</li><li>There will be improved status of education among girl children</li></ul>
