I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. But no one ever thinks about the fact that behind this universal name given to children working as labourers in hotels and tea stalls, are little kids who have been deprived of not just basic rights but even their own identity,” says Shekhar Mahajan while shedding light on the genesis of the child rights NGO. “I would be hurt and shaken to see people use the word chotu and to change this became my motivation. I wanted to give children an opportunity to live a good life away from abuse and exploitation. Starting out with a strong resolve, Shekhar and his NGO have till date changed the lives of thousands of children and have freed them from a life of abuse as child labourers and bonded labourers.The only thing stopping Shekhar from ensuring that every child gets the upbringing they deserve is a lack of resources and funds. Mahima India supports Mahima Homes in providing specialized care for minor victims of sex trafficking as well as other children in need of care and protection under the custody of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).Sexual exploitation is a multi-billion dollar industry that greatly affects vulnerable populations. Several organizations and local authorities work to rescue minors forced into this trade, but often aftercare provided is not adequate to stem the effects of the victim’s abuse. Many children run away from the Homes they are placed in to go back to the brothels, where they are seemingly better cared for.According to a UNICEF report in 2006, nearly 2 million children are enslaved in the global sex trade. In May 2009, a top official from the Central Bureau of Investigation stated that there are approximately 3 million commercial sex workers in India, of which an estimated 40% (around 1.2 million) are children.Kolkata is a critical hub for human trafficking in India as it is a source, destination, and transit point for children trafficked to various parts of the country. Large amounts of money change hands regularly in the different red-light areas, private brothels, and hotels in Kolkata and its suburbs.Mahima India was set up in August 2012 in response to this urgent need to provide resources for quality aftercare for victims of sex trafficking.
