"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. Gendu begs for food on the streets of Vrindavan to stay alive, but she dreads cruel winters. “I don’t have anything to defend myself against the weather. Their bodies get so weak during winter that they become susceptible to various diseases. As Vrindavan is on the banks of Yamuna, it gets very cold here. I have seen many women dying in their beds because of the cold. Sometimes it gets so cold that many don’t even feel like getting out of bed. This may bring them more diseases,” says Winnie. The situation gets so desperate during winters that many widow mothers living on the streets spend their nights in gaushalas (cow shelters) near Vrindavan. “But, even here, they cannot get the kind of clothes and bedding that can keep them warm. They need thermals, sweaters, gloves, caps and blankets,” says Winnie.The state of elderly widow mothersElderly widows who are abandoned by their own families are amongst the most vulnerable people in India. Many end up in Vrindavan after being abandoned, beg for food, and spend their days in damp little rooms or on the streets. While there are a few shelter homes like the one by Maitri, they cannot accommodate all the widow mothers. “We provide nutrition to over 250 widow mothers who are not part of our shelter home. But there are many more who need support during winter. Vrindavan, a holy town, is home to appx.15,000 widows abandoned &amp; destitute. Abandoned by their families, they end up begging for survival. Many elderly women in India suffer from poverty, isolation and social exclusion. In particular, elderly widowed women are often denied even basic rights such as food, health-care and are thrown out of their homes by their families.Thousands of such aged widows congregate in India's holy city, Vrindavan, where they usually spend the rest of their lives in austerity, begging for food and living in hovels with no electricity and running water. This project seeks to restore dignity in their lives. Maitri has built &amp; furnished two ashrams in Vrindavan &amp; Radhakund, providing shelter, food, clothing, &amp; healthcare to 300 resident widows &amp; 100 widows living in the neighborhood. Your donation will help provide them with essentials for a dignified &amp; healthy living as well as skill them for livelihood opportunities. You make a difference! 
 Maitri India's old age home offers a safe, hygienic and comfortable home for 300 elderly widowed women in 2 co locations. It provides them essentials for life including daily meals, nutritional supplements, clothing and healthcare. Moreover, it will facilitate skill development, income generation and secure citizenship rights and government-provided benefits. Maitri also ensures the widow mothers' dignity in death through conducting their last rites in accordance with their religious belief. 
 Our project will provide 300 aged women shelter within a supportive and comfortable environment. And provide additional 100 widows meals, health supplements, and enabling access to general and multi-specialty healthcare. These women will be able to lead healthier lives. In addition, the project will help increase their socio-economic independence by facilitating access to citizenship rights and opportunities for vocational training, skill enhancement and employment ;help in emotional and mental well being through therapies, excursion trips etc

Impact Lakshmi lived with her parents in Kolkata. She belonged to an impoverished family. As they were hardly able to make ends meet, they decided that the best way forward for Lakshmi was to get her married. **She was married off at the tender age of 15 to a daily wage laborer. ** Unfortunately, her husband got addicted to alcoholism and ended up spending most of his earnings on alcohol. She had two sons and two daughters from the marriage. The complete responsibility of raising her children was on her. She raised her children with a lot of struggle and got them married. Her daughter left for their marital home and her sons started taking care of their own families. **When Lakshmi's husband passed away, she went to live with her sons. However, they didn't want her burden. They did not take care of her nor did they give her enough food or clothes.** She suffered all of that in silence. **However, they soon started to abuse her physically, she then left home and came to Vrindavan.** She began to beg for food in Vrindavan. While **she was on the streets on Vrindavan, a project Jeevan team member found her.** Ever since she has found a place to call home. **She is not scared of shivering in the cold during winter. She knows she has a warm and clean shelter. She receives new clothes twice a year and has access to primary health care.** Although she still misses her family, Lakshmi is grateful to Maitri for providing her with a safe place to live and clean clothes during her old age. **Without the help of Maitri, Lakshmi would have been begging on the streets for basic sustenance.** **You can also help poor elderly widows get access to basic clothing and winter wear. The organization was founded in 2005 by Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Bhopinder Singh and Mrs. Winnie Singh with the goal of spreading awareness on essential health affecting information among members of India’s uniformed services and their families. This included sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tuberculosis and HIV/AIDs. Since then, Maitri soon expanded its work to include education and sensitization to end violence against women as well as citizenship rights and health issues concerning migrant populations. In 2008, Maitri came across a unique and an extremely vulnerable population in Vrindavan, widows who were victims of domestic violence, inflicted by their family members, including their sons and relatives and rendered homeless and destitute to live on the streets of Vrindavan, begging. It was a heartfelt need to support and bring dignity into the lives of the homeless, destitute and abandoned widows of Vrindavan. One can say it was a crucial moment in the history of Maitri and formed a benchmark to work towards identity, dignity and respect. In July 2010, Maitri launched Project Jeevan in Vrindavan, Jeevan symbolizes life, a life with dignity. Maitri translates as Compassion, loving-kindness. Hence compassion in life and addressing another human with loving kindness was the motto for the projects birth. The project’s aim has been to ensure identity, respect and dignity to the ageing, homeless, abandoned and destitute widows. Life is a journey we all go through. But for some people, it is a struggle for survival. It is hardship after hardship with no end in sight, Maitri stands as a bulwark against the hardships of life for the most vulnerable among us - the abandoned elderly. Take the case of Srishti. Her father was unable to pay for her education and she was married off as a teenager. Against all odds, her husband and she established a business in another town. But tragedy struck when her husband succumbed to liver failure, leaving her to provide for their family on her own. Despite all her troubles, she took care of her family as best as she could. When she was diagnosed with a stomach tumor herself, her daughter-in-law took advantage of her and abused her to the point that she was forced to leave her own house. She found her way to Maitri and never looked back. Here she is treated with respect and finds comfort in people who value her. She escaped her life of disappointment and exploitation to find peace among those who have been in her situation. Srishti is one among countless old persons who have been abandoned by everyone they love and cherish. These people don't deserve the life they have been awarded and it's up to our generous donors to right life's wrongs.
