For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Every year in India over 100,000 children in the age group of 3 to 18 years get diagnosed with Cancer, Thalassemia, Muscular Dystrophy, HIV, Heart, Kidney and other life-threatening illnesses. Apart from this there are many more that go undetected.Make-A-Wish India is gearing up its resources, mainly with volunteers and funds, to be able to meet the demand to grow it’s wish granting potential from 7,000 wishes / annum to being able to grant every year the wish of every eligible child.The children with such illness have simple wishes like a doll, bicycle, battery operated / remote control cars, new dress, birthday celebration, video games, laptop, mobile phone etc. Thus, the average cost of granting such a wish is Rs. 8,000/- only.We have over 800 wishes identified per month and another 1000 in the pending wish list at any point of time. We are unable to grant them only due to lack of funds. 
 Make-A-Wish India has tried various approaches to raise funds from corporates, CSR supports initiatives, Trusts..... but we need to reach out to the individual base of working professionals, college youth who today have the inclination to do good, have the money as well, but not the time.Hence, thru this unique program of GiveIndia + Facebook, we are very hopeful that the individual donor base will get covered and increase our fund base, which will allow us to grant more wishes of children diagnosed with a critical illness. 
 When there is no hope and dejection from constant hospitalization, medication and also awareness that there life span is decreasing, getting their wish fulfilled at times has the most life changing experiences, which we call the ‘Power of a Wish’.During 2010-2011, Make-A-Wish® America led a study that defined the effects of wishes on the organizations “community” and, for the first time, provided quantitative measures of the breadth and depth of the impact of the organization’s mission activities.The valuable conclusions of the study can be organized into three major areas that the wish process clearly appears to improve: health status, state of mind and community.Doctors have shared that granting of a wish enriches the human experience with hope, strength and joy. This has led to many children to respond better to their medical treatment and also reduce the drop out rate of the children from the long &amp; painful treatment process.

Every year, pediatric doctors refer about 15,000 children diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition to Make-A-Wish India. Make-A-Wish India requires :(A) Volunteers, especially mothers and retired persons, who can spare just 2 hours, twice a week and help us meet the sick children at the partner hospital and identify the innermost cherished wish of the child. (B) Funds, today they have funds to grant wishes of only 7,000 children every year. Today, Make-A-Wish India requires almost 500+ volunteers and INR 3.5 crores/annum to accomplish the goal of granting the wishes of the 75,000th child in its Silver Jubilee year in 2020. 
 Make-A-Wish India grants the innermost cherished wish of a child to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. There are four types of wishes that we get from the children:1. Wish to Have something - e.g. new dress, bicycle, TAB, mobile, Laptop2. Wish to Be - e.g. doctor, teacher, police officer 3. Wish to Meet - e.g. a Bollywood / sports celebrity4. Wish to Go - e.g. to a hill station / religious place 
 Doctors have shared that granting of a wish has helped the child become positive and this has resulted in a drop in children abandoning their long and painful medical treatment. granting of a wish has also helped them see children respond better to their medical treatment. Wish child Harsh had his wish to have a Mitashi CD player granted in 2004. This helped him overcome his pain and not abandon his treatment at the TATA memorial hospital. Today Harsh has recovered and has just completed his civil engineering from IIT Bombay.
