For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. COVID-19 has had adverse consequences on children's education across the world due to closure of schools and lack of access to online learning. It is only now that we are seeing schools reopen, albeit in a staggered manner. As children are making their transition into regular schooling, we notice that there are huge learning losses that children have suffered.  Over the last 1.5 years, we have made inroads in ensuring every child in our care is reached in terms of access to uninterrupted education. Over the last several months, we have taken steps to provide learning material to our children, through both online and offline means. With schools slowly opening, there is an urgent need to focus on their Foundational Learning as they are at risk of getting disconnected from formal education permanently.  
 Since 2003, Makkala Jagriti has been committed to empowering children and youth from marginalized communities across Karnataka. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the effects on access to education were unprecedented. Schools were immediately shut, and in many cases, still are. We have been providing holistic support to children and their families by way of thoughtfully-designed Learning Kits for learning at home and back in school focused on their holistic development and Foundational learning. Here’s what a kit contains: 1)  Workbooks, stationery, craft supplies, and so on2)  A daily plan that includes opportunities for parent-child engagement3)  Tracking progress of both children and parents in the learning activities4)  Lessons that promote creativity, basic literacy, emotional and physical well-being5)  Learning through technology – Videos shared through WhatsApp6)  Bridge Course material for Foundational Learning Our focus is on the well-being of children, welcoming them back to school and focus on bridging their learning gaps in foundational learning.  Your support has led us far in this endeavour. Uninterrupted Learning During The Pandemic

With no school, no access to online teaching and parents unable to home-school them, rural children are at risk of dropping out of formal education - forever. Many are locked up in tiny homes with large families, putting them at risk of emotional and mental distress. At Makkala Jagriti, we are striving to provide holistic learning and development support to rural-poor children, right at their homes. But we have only reached a fraction.  Makkala Jagriti, founded in 2003, is a Bengaluru based NGO supporting over 18,000 children and youth from marginalized communities across Karnataka. In response to the Covid-19 crisis, we are providing “holistic support” to rural children and their families; from essential supplies to a thoughtfully designed “Learning Kit” for home schooling. Makkala Jagriti “Lockdown Learning Kit” for rural-poor children includes,1.     Learning and activity material - workbooks, stationery, craft supplies, etc. 2.     Daily Plan for healthy routine and positive parent-child engagement 3.     Involving parents to carry out learning activities and tracking progress on phone4.     Activities focused on creativity, basic literacy, emotional and physical well-being5.     Tech-driven learning through videos and activity descriptions shared via WhatsApp / SMS 
 Our “Learning Kit” has been tested successfully with many rural families, providing effective results in home-schooling while also engaging parents in the learning process. This has also helped families bond and stay emotionally strong during the crisis. Families in the urban poor settlements in Bangalore continue to face loss of livelihood and there is difficulty in accessing basic medical supplies as well. They also live in spaces that do not offer separate sanitation or quarantine facilities.We, at Makkala Jagriti, are committed to standing by the communities that we work with and supporting them in times of crises. When the first wave struck in early 2020 we were able to support over 5,000 families with a month’s groceries, over 10,000 children with learning kits to ensure their education is uninterrupted, and over 10,000 families with information and awareness on preventive measures and self-care.  It was all thanks to the support of contributors like you, who ensured that our very own are not left behind in this battle.Together we can battle anything and we request your support again to tide over the current situation.

Where a child is born should not limit how far the child can go! And early childhood learning has a big influence on this.Research has shown that 90% of brain development happens before the age of 6, paving the way for future health and learning. However, many children in India do not have access to the experiences necessary to facilitate this. In a world where it is common to see children deprived of basic learning opportunities, making sure every child receives the right early learning and developmental experiences is essential for ensuring equity in our society.5-year old Neha is the daughter of a construction labourer and a homemaker. Like millions of parents, Neha’s parents too have big dreams for her. But what can tap her potential and set her up for a future of her dreams is a positive pre-school experience.Anganwadis, established by the government in 1975, are the focal centers for child development services across villages, and wards in urban settlements in India. They play a key role in laying the foundation for proper physical, psychological and emotional development of children between 0 and 6 years old.  
 Makkala Jagriti is working towards equipping Anganwadi Teachers and Helpers in Karnataka to facilitate early childhood learning opportunities to children. These interventions ensure children between the ages of 3 and 6 are receiving adequate inputs towards social, physical. cognitive, emotional and language development, making them school-ready. Our experience with over 300 Anganwadis has resulted in enhanced school readiness among thousands of children, enabling them to cope and succeed throughout their school years and beyond. Neha is now receiving early learning inputs from her Anganwadi Teacher. During the pandemic, her parents made sure she continued to learn - by doing the activities shown in videos that Makkala Jagriti sent to them everyday. With a strong foundation, Neha’s journey into the future will be driven by a positive mindset, confidence in her abilities and openness to learning.  Every child deserves the opportunities to build a bright future and make the nation proud. 13.5 lakh children are enrolled in Anganwadis in Karnataka alone, and they will be ready to write India’s growth story in a few years.
