“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. From a peaceful corner of the Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram, Manav Sadhna (MS) has been humbly serving since 1995 to strengthen underprivileged communities in Ahmedabad through programs in Holistic Education, Nutrition, Health and Hygiene, Youth and Women’s Empowerment, Senior Care, Livelihoods and more. Although there is great diversity amongst these programs, they are all based on people’s participation and evolve according to the needs of the community. Over time, we have seen the holistic growth transformation of the communities with significant improvements in sanitation, education and health.The story of Manav Sadhna begins well past its inception. Our inspiration springs from the life-message and principles of Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekanand and other dedicated freedom fighters and social reformers, such as Babubhai Harilal Joshi. Shri Ishwarbhai Patel further paved the way through his mentorship and life-long dedication to service. However, the organization took shape when the founders, overwhelmed by the loving reception of the children of the Parikshitlal Ashramshala (a hostel based in the Gandhi Ashram), were moved by the extreme poverty and dire circumstances of the premises and its young residents. Registered in the US and India in 1990, Manav Sadhna started with the simple intention of gathering underprivileged children under the trees of Environment Sanitation Institute in the Gandhi Ashram to give them love, nutrition and a chance to enjoy their childhood.  Over the years Manav Sadhna has adopted the model of developing Community Centers in the heart of urban slums as a space that enables the holistic development of the community. We currently operate 8 Community Centers across Ahmedabad.Every Day, At our community centers,1) We provide all students with a nourishing snack or meal to ensure they receive the vitamins and nutrients they need to thrive.2) Our program continues to provide a glass of milk in addition to the snack of the day to all children at every center.We provide healthy nutrition to the children who come for an education at the various centers from Monday through Saturday. The daily menu has been set up for the children according to the nutrition facts which include fruits.
