Human trafficking in India is a horrifying crisis. Thousands of victims, primarily women and girl children, are exploited in red-light areas. Over 10,659 cases were reported between 2018-2022, but experts say that these numbers are likely a fraction of the reality due to underreporting, yet they still do expose the magnitude of the crisis. Girls make up 71.4% of missing children in India and a large number of these girls end up at red-light areas. Sex trafficking is particularly gruesome, with girls as young as 12 sold for as little as a few thousand rupees.

Infant India runs a home called Anandgram that cares for 60 HIV-positive orphaned children from underprivileged backgrounds. Through no fault of their own, these orphans contracted HIV, a serious disease. Without parents or guardians, these children have no access to medicines, doctors and the HIV treatments needed to stay alive. Infant India is an NGO that takes in these orphans and provides them with a home, nutritious food, medication and education for the rest of their childhoods and sets them on a path to have better and healthier futures. HIV-positive orphaned children face harsh discrimination and are outcast and shunned by relatives, neighbours, schools and society as a whole. The NGO has even come across children who have been forcibly thrown out of their schools, once it is discovered that they are HIV-positive. But these children suffer from more than the lack of medication or even access to education. By focusing on holistic and long term care, the NGO provides all that a child needs. Infant India’s safe and loving shelter, food and medical care tends to the children’s basic needs and keeps them safe and well fed and gives them the vital medication their bodies require to fight the disease. The NGO also provides education and skills training to give the children a future in which they can be self-sufficient, financially independent and live dignified lives. But the NGO does not want the children to spend their lives alone, after having been abandoned at such young ages. So when the children become adults, the NGO arranges marriages with suitable partners, something that would be difficult to do on their own. Because of this thoughtful care, these marriages have resulted in the births of around 34 babies who are HIV-free. Each of these children contracted the virus through mother-to-child transmission. Everyday more than 600 children and 200 women go missing in India. West Bengal accounts for 44% of reported cases of trafficking in India. South 24 Parganas is one of the top five districts with the highest occurrence of such cases. The twin blows of COVID-19 and Cyclone Amphan have landed people in further abject poverty. Reverse migration along with a lack of any foreseeable income, acute food shortage, and loss of connectivity has led to communities constantly battling for daily necessities. The stress, poverty due to unemployment, the disruption of social and protective networks, and decreased access to services have increased the risk of violence for women. More domestic violence complaints, child marriages, child trafficking, and teen pregnancy have been filed under COVID-19 than in the last ten years. Most of the girls who are trafficked are lured from their homes with the false promise of employment opportunities. Even when girls are rescued and brought back, the biggest obstacle they face is a lack of gainful occupation.This is where MISSING works. 
 To prevent trafficking, it is crucial to provide livelihood and entrepreneurial opportunities and ensure the financial empowerment of vulnerable community members. Even after undergoing skill training, the key problem many women face is the lack of entrepreneurial skills and the inaccessibility to markets. MISSING has two Women Empowerment Centers (WEC) - in Madhya Gurgurya and Madhusudanpur. We have a Digital Empowerment Centre in Vasa - Madhya Gurguria that provides free digital literacy training to women and youths. Through the Digital Literacy Centres, MISSING will reach more vulnerable youth, survivors of violence, and child marriage to create more digitally empowered and entrepreneurial leaders in the villages of Sundarbans. MISSING also provides training to vulnerable youth for leadership and youth-led advocacy on social issues (youth empowerment and leadership) through the Swadhikaar program. The Awareness and Safety Programs will be conducted with Swadhikaar Youth leaders across multiple villages which have a high occurrence of child marriage and sex trafficking. They will get inspired to act as catalysts for change, spreading awareness among their peers and families.
