For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The migrating population mostly working as plumbers, electricians, drivers (taxi, auto) vendors, hawkers, auto mechanics, zari workers, residing on rental basis come to the cities in search of employment for better standard of living, to get better education and healthcare for their children. Due to the rising costs of living, they compromise on their educational needs especially pre-primary education. This vulnerability leads to cascading effects, children in their vital age of development which if detected and intervened at the right time (formative years) can be crucial in setting the base for later education.Today, pre-primary education is more of a commercial venture with most Nursery Schools operating on commercial lines. The pre-primary schools attached to the Municipal schools provide a feeder source for the higher classes while Aanganwadis and ICDS schemes (since 1975) run by Government has not yet made a significant dent in child’s overall development in their early years, as the major focus remains on combating malnourishment. The Government has issues of ineffective planning and implementation of programs, accountability, shortage of qualified early childhood teachers etc.Government Schools operate Balwadis and Aanganwadis at an extremely low cost with lack of quality learning, while Private ones charge exorbitant fees. 
 MESCO provides Education Aid to Children in Nurseries The Children gain from almost 4 decades of expertise &amp; experienced teachers with the following traits: Qualified, trained teachers.Bank of teaching aids.Teaching methodology that the child enjoys – Child centered experiential learning.Providing nutritious meal as per the advice of dietitian.Preparations the child to get admission to good English medium high school of the area.Singular record of having seen over 10,000 students getting admission to high schools of the area around.The Nurseries have a proper system of internal monitoring and record keeping of the child’s attendance, academic performance, teacher’s observance reports in place. The teachers are instrumental in reaching out to parents and informing them about the admissions and their procedures so that the child is admitted to good high school of the area. 
 70-80% of the children from Nurseries are enrolled in the Reputed High Schools of the areas; this indicates that we have met our objective of creating awareness and got the parents interested in their children’s education and finally securing admission into good schools. Hopefully all these children will go up the ladder and complete their Board exams. Through the funds raised through Give India, A child can pay its fees to Nurseries.

In absence of support for health care &amp; treatment people are pushed towards poverty, permanent disability, dependence at times leading to loss of lives. We at MESCO believe that everyone has the right to access medical support without suffering hardships.It is through our Decades of observance that Government inspite of having substantial public health infrastructure has its own set of limitations in catering the diverse medical needs of Mumbai’s population. The additions of migrant populations, coming to Mumbai in surge for health care support bring in additional challenges. Our interactions with the social welfare departments from almost the top 5 Govt. Hospitals viz. 1)J.J Group of Hospitals 2) K.E.M Hospital 3) B.Y.L Nair Hospital and 4) LTMG Sion Hospitals have helped us in understanding and catering the required assistance to such poor patients. At the same time these Hospitals have Conferring Certificates of Merits to MESCO at their Annual Day Celebrations for our Services in the field of Medical Support. 
 It is for these under-privileged people of the society that MESCO strives to provide General Medical Aid! MESCO has been providing Medical Aid to the ones in dire need since the year 1976 through the various schemes. Cases approach personally as well as &amp; telephonic enquires every day for medical aid help are guided by our medical staff about the scheme &amp; the procedure to get the medical aid form , which are distributed in the every month. Under this scheme, aid will be provided to poor patients who require help for medicines, minor surgeries, the cost of diagnostic procedures, and the provision of medical appliances (prosthesis)  
 Relieves the financial burden and stress on health of the patient also for his/her concerned family member.Being hopeful for support and treatment cost brings in empathy for the patient. With surrounding sense of security hopes of better living conditions amidst the traumatic scenario are ignited, especially in cases of Accidental/Permanent Disability/Permanent Dependency Cases.

Help provide Medical Aid

Families living in slums in subhuman conditions often struggle for existence; every day is a fight for survival-for food, clothing and shelter. They yearn for better deal in life; they would like their children to be educated. Quite a few even brave this, compromising with their basic needs and send their children to school, but sooner than later, because of large families and unaffordable costs of education withdraw their children after two to three years; these children, are exploited as child labourers, giving rise to one more cycle of want and deprivation as this generation repeats the cycle.The drop outs take place usually at the beginning of the year as parents face a big bill for “beginning of the year costs” for the text books, note books, stationary, uniforms, even in the non fee charging (Municipal/ Govt. schools)/aided schools. In most of the aided schools too, at the primary levels (I-IV) the fees (admission, term fees and tuition fees) are pretty high.Our observance from decades is that if assistance in form of scholarship is provided to cover this “beginning of the year costs”, the drop outs can be arrested with better retention and higher educational levels of attainment. 
 The problem is colossal and requires that the marginalized and the poorest of the poor urban slum dwellers are provided assistance “scholarships” to take care of the “beginning of the year educational costs” in order to prevent them from pulling their children out of school.These scholarships should be continued year to year, preferably through the entire schooling period for children enrolled at Non-aided schools and most certainly at Primary levels at schools aided.Continuous support i.e. such intervention every year for 5 years especially for these marginalized children from Std. I/II to Std VI/ VII as well as any levels beyond until which level the parent would have supported. It would help in ensuring that these children would continue their education and clearly see the benefits of completing their schooling.MESCO has been assisting marginalized students on a multiyear basis by providing the funds to meet the “start up” costs and preventing the students from being drop-outs. In this respect during the year 2022-23 we helped 2823 students at School level &amp; 1256 students at college level. The average cost for these students put together works to about Rs.8,000/-. 
  The biggest benefit of the scheme is that aid is provided continuously on a year to year basis from nursery right up to graduation levels. Unless there is a disqualification due to varied reasons Since it is a means based facility even an average student can pursue his/her education without it being a financial burden on the family Families with limited resources usually invest in male child education. Aid supports many a female child to be educated The aid facilitates many a first generation learners/professionals thereby creating a very positive effect at the family/society level. Prevents dropouts &amp; child labour &amp; also facilitates education which prevents children from antisocial activities The fees support results in self sufficiency &amp; in turn empower &amp; give self confidence to the adults &amp; children of the family over a period. Qualifications results in a better job/ or being a professional this increases family income &amp; results in an improved quality of life. Education &amp; an enhanced family income puts a stop to adults/children from engaging in anti social activities resulting in a better society / world at large. Increased awareness of life &amp; the world.
