Help Disabled Children with Shelter & Care

For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. To meet the financial costs of running the home, SHEOWS needs support to continue providing the residents with all the facilities that they need. This includes constant care and round-the-clock medical attention, nutritious food and maintaining a hygienic environment to keep the seniors in comfort and good health. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. Our Head office is in Bangalore and a regional office in Ahmedabad. We have since transformed the lives of 18,000+ children and adults with disabilities providing appropriate and customized wheelchairs across 18 states of India through a network of partner NGOs and government bodies.Wheelchairs are at our heart - but not just any wheelchair - it is the right wheelchair, fitted to meet an individual’s particular needs and robust enough to withstand the environment lived in, enabling lives to be transformed. The Covid-19 pandemic has forced additional problems on the disabled (20% of our population have a mobility disability).Whenever a disaster strikes or if a crisis like situation arises, persons with disabilities are the most vulnerable. Their vulnerability is amplified in a situation like COVID-19 pandemic, because their ability to access information is limited, their ability to move to safer places is limited, secondary health complications (pressure sores, reduced respiratory capacity, reduced immunity) expose them to a greater risk of infection than others. The vulnerability is not only due to aspects of their immobility/disability, but also because they often experience adverse socio-economic conditions than persons without disabilities. This situation is also compounded by the fact that discrimination and stigma remain endemic, which leads to further marginalisation and exclusion.Persons with disabilities have all mostly lost their jobs when the lockdown was announced. Most of them must travel to urban centers for skills training and many of them do find a job in the cities. However, it becomes difficult for them to sustain in the cities with their small earnings and high cost of living, especially for accessible accommodation and transport.   
 Identify 500 disabled persons and parents/carers across India , Provide skill training to the identified disabled young adults and parents/carers-Skill training, ranging from one to three months, providing trades like tailoring, mobile phone repair, beautician, computer skills, organic farming, backyard poultry, petty shops etc. Ensure employment/self- employment to the identified young adults after skill training- Training on setting up small business, develop a business plan, provide start up grant based on the business plan &amp; supported to set up their own micro enterprise, leading to income generation and socialinclusion. The program includes building capacity of NGO staff and wheelchair users. Capacity of our project staff and wheelchair users will be enhanced. We aim to train at least 50 persons during the project period thereby ensuring long-term sustainability of the work. 
 The proposed project will directly benefit 500 young adults with mobility disability and their families with the provision of need-specific wheelchair services and skill training to increase their skills, build confidence and earn their livelihoods. 2000 family members will be positively impacted by the increased/improved mobility and skill training of their children/family member (based on an average family size of four in India). Family members, mainly mothers of disabled children, who are their primary carers, will beneﬁt and get respite as a result of their children being mobile and independent. This will give the mothers more time to go out for work and earn extra income and other family and social obligations. The partner organisation’s (Centre for wheelchair services &amp; livelihoods training) capacity will be built to address the individual needs of persons with mobility disability, and it will be available to meet the needs of thousands of other disabled people in the area. The project will also build capacity of young adults with disabilities to undertake income generation activities and support their families.The long-term impact of the action will be that disabled people will have a sustainable livelihood and lead their life with dignity.

From Isolation to Inclusion- Livelihood for Wheelchair Users in the Covid 19 World

The most recent Indian Census (2011) reports that 27 million people have some form of disability, 20% of those have a mobility disability, with at least one million people needing a wheelchair. Without the right wheelchair people with mobility disabilities across India are left isolated socially and economically, with little or no access to healthcare, education or employment and unable to participate in political, social and family life.  This leaves them amongst the poorest of the poor; invisible and isolated and vulnerable to secondary life-threatening health conditions. This situation is also compounded by the fact that discrimination and stigma remain endemic, which leads to further marginalization and exclusion.   
 Motivation India will:<ol><li>Identify and provide appropriate wheelchairs to 50 children and adults with disabilities so that they have access to appropriate wheelchairs, leading to better mobility and health.</li><li>Survey and screening to be conducted by trained field workers; Clinical &amp; functional assessment; Customisation and fitting of wheelchairs; User training of wheelchair; Follow up and maintenance of wheelchairs.</li><li>Provide therapy service and follow up for improvement in posture and flexibility for functional independence: Physiotherapy exercises to children and adults with disabilities; Training parents on supporting their children</li><li>Provide wheelchair skills training to wheelchair users for navigating their wheelchairs through different terrains and will get information about the maintenance of their wheelchairs. </li><li>Build capacity of NGO staff in appropriate wheelchair provision.</li></ol> 
 The proposed project will directly benefit 50 children and adults with mobility-related disability and their families with the provision of need-based wheelchair services and skill training to minimize the impact of disability on their lives. 150 family members will be positively impacted by the increased/improved mobility and skill training of their children/family members.Family members, mainly mothers of children with disabilities, who are their primary carers, will beneﬁt and get respite as a result of their children being mobile and independent. This will give the mothers more time to go out for work and earn extra income and other family and social obligations. The long term impact of the action will be that the partner organization will continue having the capacity to provide needs-based services to persons with mobility disabilities in the region even after completion of the project. The wheelchair skills training will help other wheelchair users to have appropriate wheelchairs and live a healthy life. Awareness generation in the community on appropriate wheelchair services will instill a sense of confidence in persons with mobility disabilities to be independent.

Wheelchair Provision for Persons with Mobility Disability

People with Disabilities are at a greater risk of India’s deadly wave of COVID-19. They are more likely to be infected by the virus because of their underlying health conditions and also makes the virus more deadly for them.  Together, we can help. With your contributions, Motivation India could support thousands of persons with disabilities. We can provide food kits and health kits, so that they don’t have to struggle to access essentials supplies that they need to survive.   Many of our Wheelchairs Users are in poor urban and rural communities for whom access to necessities of everyday living itself a challenge. They are now facing difficulties to avail essentials like provisions and sanitizers. 
 Persons with disabilities require the same resources and assistance that everyone does – adequate information and instructions, social and medical services, and protection from infection by those who have contracted the virus. Motivation India intends to support Wheelchair users and carers during this time of uncertainty, fear and anxiety. The threat is real and cannot be underestimated.
