For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. MAYA MISSION: “Working to create an empowered and equitable society that systematically addresses livelihood, education and health.”Livelihood Program: Over the years MAYA has actively supported the handicraft cluster of Channapatna, Ramanagara District, Karnataka, India for the past 15 years. by creating comprehensive training modules to train the artisans in making high quality toys and revived the art of using traditional natural dyes to make the toys safe for children. Today MAYA has trained 65 women artisans in Channapatna who successfully practice the craft.MAYA Health Program: Focusing on preventive and promotive health by strengthening the last mile connect of the health care delivery system through Health Workers called Health Entrepreneurs (HEs). Health Entrepreneurs are dedicated, trained, technology enabled health care micro entrepreneurs who screen, monitor and advice the community for health conditions like Blood Pressure, Blood sugar and Anaemia at an affordable cost at their doorsteps. She is the sole bread winner as her husband passed away and supporting and educating 2 daughters 5 years and 7 years old. She earns minimum Rs. 250 per day.Like Ramya currently there are 84 trained women entrepreneurs providing blood pressure/Diabetes/Anemia screening at their doorstep to over 16,800 families in 2&nbsp;districts (Ramanagaram and Mandya Districts).MAYA through women entrepreneurship program aims to strength the program by awareness campaigns to educate on the critical importance of nutrition and exercise. This initiative is pivotal in leading healthier and happier lives. It also aims to add new service and expanding to other districts.Parents Movement for Inclusive Development (PMID)PMID is a movement of parents of children with intellectual disability working in different locations of Bangalore and in district of Karnataka namely Vijaynagar, Bellary, Koppal and Tumkur.Parents of special children often find themselves stressed, anxious and overwhelmed in accepting and engaging their children due to lack of a supportive environment.PMID facilitates parents to recognize the need for and importance of collective interaction and engagement&nbsp;to&nbsp;identify their own needs and that of children and also to evolve support within the&nbsp;community.Parents have organized outings with other parents to parks, farmhouses and public spaces. They experience for the first time that the&nbsp;other parents present are there to&nbsp;care for their child and this gives them a completely new perspective of what is possible.The&nbsp;experience of parents coming together and having activities has helped to&nbsp;reduce their emotional stress, giving them more hope of possibilities and encouragement to address their challenges and concerns eg more participation from the spouses, looking for opportunities for the children to be more independent.MAYA through PMID program aims at&nbsp;developing into&nbsp;a more caring, inclusive and community driven model that makes it sustainable to accommodate needs of all sections of the society.&nbsp;

All over India 7 million artisans toll ceaselessly in the handicrafts sector to keep our rich culture and heritage alive The pandemic has significantly affected this informal and vulnerable workforce. What is of concern is how to create sustainable livelihoods for this marginalised section of our society.The critical challenges faced by this sector are:1.     Unorganised sector2.     Outdated technology3.     Skill deficit4.     Low productivity of workers5.     Not Remunerative for artisans6.     Attrition from the craft7.     Poor quality of products8.     Lack of standards/certification9.     Products not contemporary10.   Lack of market linkages 
 These problems cannot be addressed piecemeal. They must be looked at holistically.MAYA conducted a comprehensive survey of 502 artisans in Channapatna and analysed their socio-economic conditions. Based on a detailed SWOT analysis, MAYA has created a detailed revival program for the Channapatna lacware toys cluster (with GI Geographical Indicator) which includes:<ol><li>A CFC (Common Facility Centre) that serves as a centre of excellence for artisans</li><li>New technology that reduces drudgery for the artisan and shifts focus to the 'art/craft' aspects</li><li>Quality emphasis and International certifications to facilitate exports</li><li>Skill upgradation</li><li>Design Studio to make designs contemporary </li><li>Healthcare and social security benefits</li><li>Implementation of World Fair Trade practices</li><li>Establishing market linkages.</li></ol>For these initiatives MAYA has been successful in securing grants from the MSME Ministry and NABARD which meets 80% of the project fund requirements.MAYA is appealing to friends and well wishers to help with the balance 20% contribution.MAYA is also scaling up its livelihoods mission by adopting 2 new clusters:<ol><li>An all women weavers/embroidery workers cluster in Chamarajanagar, Karnataka</li><li>A natural dye - growing, extraction and processing cluster with a textiles focus in Bagalkot, Karnataka </li></ol> 
 MAYA's initiatives are game changing and transformative. In the Channapatna we have formed an Artisan owned and managed producer company called ArtisanPride. This is already 150 artisans strong and expected to grow to 500 members in 3 to 5 years, nurturing an entrepreneurial sprit. We have already trained and inducted a large number of women into a traditionally male dominated craft.MAYA has a strong presence in the district through its health navigator network. They serve over 2000 artisans family members by providing doorstep health services.MAYA has subscribed to doctors tele-consulting services (available to multiple local languages) and has provided artisans free access to it.All artisans are enrolled in social security and accident insurance programs.Artisan incomes will increase by 50% over the next 3 to 5 years.MAYA's work in the Chamarajanagar, Karnataka weavers cluster will benefit 500 weavers/embroidery workers and in the natural dyes cluster in Bagalkot, they will benefit 1000 workers. MAYA will extend its Health Navigator network to serve these communities too.

Sustainable Livelihoods Post Pandemic

Household chores, taking care of elders/children, and social norms don’t allow women to go out and find livelihood. There are few realistic livelihood options for women.Women earning a livelihood has multiple and deeper impact not just for themselves but for their families. Livelihood leads to improved self esteem as well.Health access for women is often limited. Access and awareness to basic healthcare services leads to improved to health outcomes for women and their families. 
 Maya’s Health platform enables and empowers women to earn a dignified living.MAYA Health helps provide livelihood means to women who otherwise have little means of earning. A micro-entrepreneurship model that ensures sustainability of the program.This venture provides last mile health access to women who don’t readily and easily don’t avail basic health services (public or private).MAYA Health trains women to become community Health Entrepreneurs. The Health Entrepreneurs go door-to-door and provide health screening services such as BP and sugar tests for a fee. The women Health Entrepreneurs keep 100% of the fees they earn from their hard work. MAYA Health needs funding to help train and certify women, finance health kits (Rs. 6,000 per kit), and help pay for coordinator salaries. 
 Each woman Health Entrepreneurs earns Rs. 4,000-5,000 per month by doing 100-150 screenings per month in their community.Total screenings of 10,000 per month, leading to early diagnosis of high BP and sugar about 25% of the total screened. Introducing gynecological and thyroid screenings for women.

Healthcare for Women By Women

Healthcare is a right of every individual, but poor infrastructure and health human resource have resulted in failure to address the healthcare needs of our large population. Ill health leads to loss of employment and income, thereby impacting the entire family. The focus of the health system both in the public and private is largely curative. While most illnesses resulting in death are preventable, the bigger challenge lies in ensuring awareness, access, and affordability with a specific focus on preventive health care.According to NFHS survey 2015-16, 53.9% of children are found to be anemic, 47.1% of women in reproductive age is anemic, People among 15-45 years of age, 4.2% of Men and 5.5% women who are diabetic. People among 15-45 years of age, 10.2% of Men and 6.0% of women who are diabetic and 22.9% of children are malnourished.It is also observed that health is becoming a neglected aspect, more so in rural communities. However, due to the economic burden piling up because of healthcare (even if the services are free in the government set up), the individual spends money in transport and also in case of a male member, loses wages for the day when he seeks healthcare. Hence, most of them tend to postpone healthcare until they reach a stage of complications. 
 MAYA has trained Health Navigators (Health Workers) as micro-entrepreneurs to screen and provide basic preventive health services to the community at their doorsteps. They are also trained to use medical handheld screening devices such as Glucometer, BP apparatus, Hemocue, weighing scale. This health program has reached over 95 villages (about 70,000 population) for anemia, hypertension, diabetes, and malnutrition combined. Our health navigators follow up on identified cases with necessary education/counseling, referrals, diet management and providing essential health supplies and supplements. Our intervention has identified more than 10,000 people with health issues who need help. This has not only improved their health outcomes but also, their overall well-being.The idea is to make health navigators self-sustainable and continue screening and following up the community with essential services and products at a nominal rate to improve their health. 
 MAYA has been able to train over 45 health navigators who were limited to household activities and were aspiring for a career path. Out of this 35 Health Navigators continued to earn their livelihood by providing health services to the community. They have covered more than 90 villages and 27 wards in Channapatna taluk.The program has been able to provide health status information for over 10,000 people. The people are provided with following services at their doorsteps - basic screening for anemia, hypertension, diabetes, and malnutrition.Out of the10,000 people screened, over 40% of them are followed with regular services are able to control hypertension and diabetes.These services have helped to identify early stages of health issues and resulted in the target community taking preventive steps for their health and well being. There has been a reduction in health expenses due to health complications.

Movement For Awareness and Health Initiative (MAHI)

While rural Karnataka continues to battle Covid-19, some are at more risk than the others - elderly, pregnant women, people with pre-existing health conditions and children. Lack of awareness and noncompliance to prescribed safety norms in rural communities are putting these vulnerable populations at high risk of Covid 19 infection. There is a need to empower the community to become more proactive in taking responsibility of their own health and exercising their right to quality healthcare. While our Community Health Workers (CHWs) are equipped to hand-hold them and provide healthcare education and services, they need your urgent support to reach out to those in need. 
 At MAYA, we have been providing healthcare services to lakhs of rural-poor people in Ramanagara district through CHWs, who are local women with basic education levels of 10th Std. and above. Due to the Covid crisis, while they were unable to travel to villages and continue their regular healthcare services, they provided the much-needed Covid-19 prevention, care and support services through phone to rural-poor communities. Today, each CHW is actively supporting hundreds of families through Covid prevention and critical healthcare services, including caring for the elderly, people with hypertension and diabetes, children and pregnant women. Here’s how 85 Women CHWs are creating 16 Covid-free Panchayats: ·       Campaigning door-to-door with Government frontline workers to raise awareness about Covid-19 ·       Educating and supporting vulnerable members on Covid-19 infection prevention and care ·       Distributing personal protective material to CHWs, and vulnerable/high-risk people ·       Providing Panchayats with Covid prevention campaign material (flyers, posters, etc.)  
 With each CHW serving 750-1000 rural families per month, we aim to reach over 2.5 lakh people over the next few months, including 90,000 vulnerable/high-risk people. The cost to cover the service of each CHW is Rs 3500/month, while the cost of developing communication material is Rs 10,000/Panchayat. The cost of personal protective requirement for CHWs and vulnerable population is 30,000 per Panchayat. Since the CHWs are putting their own lives at risk to volunteer their services, we seek to cover the minimal expenses related to their work and towards protecting their health while they help save the lives of others.
