“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Mrinaljyoti Rehabilitation Center (MRC) is the result of courage and determination of Mrs. Amiya Pathak Borpujari and Mr. Joy Prakash Borpujari. They founded the organization to fight for the development of their only child who has an intellectual disability. Their experience has not only helped their own child but also extended helping hands to other children with disabilities. Mrinaljyoti Rehabilitation Centre was established in the year 1999 and is running successfully till date with the grace and help of well-wishers at Duliajan Kumudnagarh, in the Dibrugarh district of Assam. The vision of Mrinaljyoti Rehabilitation Centre (MRC) is 'maximum use of capabilities of the people with disabilities'. Their mission is 'to empower people with disabilities to live in a society with dignity'. MRC provides various support services to persons with disabilities, such as early detection and intervention, special and inclusive education, vocational training, residential services, outreach programmes, awareness and sensitization, distribution of aids and appliances, etc. The main operational areas of MRC are Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivsagar, and Namsai, and Lohit districts of Arunachal Pradesh.

Mrinaljyoti Rehabilitation Centre, Duliajan, works with the development of Persons with Disability, both physically and mentally. For their physical development, it provides physiotherapy, health camps, etc, and for their mental development, it provides services like counseling and training in all possible forms, so that they can live in the society with dignity. 
 Right from the year of establishment of the organization, Mrinaljyoti Rehabilitation Duliajan has been consistently serving Persons With Disabilities(PwDs) by providing supportive services such as means for early detection and intervention, counseling and advocacy, aims at special and inclusive education, stress on vocational training provides residential services. Besides all these Mrinaljyoti Rehabilitation Centre is also engaged in outreach, awareness and sensitization programmes and plays an important role in the distribution of aids and appliances. 
 Mrinaljyoti Rehabilitation centre is a hope to the PwDs in the entire district of Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, and also in Sivsagar, Assam. Through the services that the organization is rendering since the last few decades, many needy PwDs are now able to walk, speak and perform their day to day activities. Along with all the aids and appliances that the organization is providing, it also serves as helping hands for its local needy people.
