The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, and very limited access to healthcare and quality education”, says Bipin Dhane, founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. We use innovative and alternative approaches to engage children from marginalized backgrounds

Education

Muskaan, an NGO in Bhopal, has actively worked with denotified tribes and urban marginalized groups since 1997. Denotified Tribal Communities face systematic and institutional violence due to the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871 instituted by the then-colonial government. Despite its repeal, the criminal label persists, leading to rights denial and police abuse. Muskaan operates in informal urban settlements and villages to nurture the potential of people across various age groups and life stages. We try to focus on the individual journeys of community members while drawing strength from collective pursuits. A key aspect of our undertaking is to strengthen leadership within marginalized communities, enabling them to spearhead and guide interventions at the community level.The origin of Ultimate Frisbee has roots in initiating a game that added to the counter-war revolution. It tries to inculcate the values of democracy, gender equity, and inclusiveness. In context to our work, Ultimate Frisbee works as resistance against discrimination unjust forms of oppression, and gender-based violence In Muskaan, over 300 children are regularly playing Ultimate Frisbee in the bastis and villages of Bhopal, Sehore, Harda, and Khandwa districts of Madhya Pradesh. The basis is home to children from historically marginalized communities that include Vimukta (denotified tribal communities) such as the Pardhi community and Kanjar community, Gond community, Dalit and Muslim communities. Frisbee is a gender-neutral sport, with mixed-gendered teams. Many young girls have found a community and a support system that has supported them in defying patriarchal norms and are pursuing their higher studies. It has become a way to bring about social acceptance within the basis, of furthering the education of girls and has expanded the scope to move towards their dreams. Having experienced several traumas, many people from the basis start drinking smoking, and consuming tobacco at a younger age, however through frisbee and participating in sports, many have stopped. Children have traveled across the country to participate in tournaments where they get exposed to new places, and people of different cultures, broadening their views and inspiring them. We want to organize a tournament that will be led by our youth engaged with frisbee, inviting others from marginalized backgrounds to engage with this revolutionary game in Bhopal. We are seeking funding of fifteen lakhs for this! The funds will be spent towards the training costs of four teams from Bhopal, Mundikhedi, and Khandwa, the travel and stay of ten teams (with 22 participants per team), their food, and the organization of the tournament.
