For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. “During a visit to a nearby village, I found two abandoned babies left to die in a cowshed. Visibly fragile and covered in dirt, the condition of the little ones left me in shock. Moved by the sight, I inquired in the area and was told that these babies were left there by their own family after they were diagnosed with HIV. I immediately brought the babies back home. This was in 2001 and that marked the beginning of a two-decade-long struggle to save abandoned HIV+ children from dying on the streets,” says 75-year-old Mangal Shah, fondly addressed as tai by her 150 adopted grandchildren. Mangaltai founded Palawi with a mission to give abandoned HIV+ children a second chance at life and, more importantly, to right the wrongs that society had done to them. For over two decades, she has rescued hundreds of children off the streets and given them the love they were denied for no fault of theirs. She has given the children life-saving medical care and education while helping them lead normal lives.“It does not cost us money to give them the love they deserve, but the cost of medical care, food, shelter, and education is more than what I can shoulder on my own and I need urgent help,” pleads Mangaltai. Every child deserves to have a chance at a future,” she adds. Narrating a story about a 5-year-old boy Mangaltai says, “We rescued 5-year-old Pranay (name changed) from a nearby village in 2005. He was severely malnourished, sick and had a gaping wound on his head. Seeing the baby’s condition and the maggot-infested wound, doctors gave him six months to live. But Pranay is now 22 years old, he is financially independent and leading a normal life with dignity. What would have happened if I gave up on him?” Mangaltai has faced severe discrimination all along her journey with Palawi, owing to her work and for standing up for the rights of HIV+ kids. She was driven out of schools when she tried to get admissions for her children. “The discrimination against our children was such that they were not even allowed to set foot in any of the schools in this area. We were left with no choice but to start a school of our own,” says Mangaltai.The healing power of loveAccording to Mangaltai, the love that children of Palawi receive is one of the strongest factors in their recovery and healthy childhood. “We are there for these kids throughout the day. These kids have low immunity and are prone to illness. Which is why we need to be extremely cautious. We need to have regular health check-ups to ensure they are safe and healthy. But all of this comes at a cost. It was first set up in 1981 in New York by Shri Sunil Dutt and the Indian Community in memory of Smt Nargis Dutt.  Over these 42 years, the impact of the foundation has been immeasurable touching the lives of millions of individuals through equipping 100’s of rural hospitals PAN INDIA with medical diagnostic equipment as well as mobile vans, supporting treatment of thousands of cancer patients annually, providing scholarships for meritorious and deserving students and holistic development of rural schools in India. While it has immediately impacted a child's access to education and learning, the uncertainty around these children being able to join school in future is as concerning. The Nargis Dutt Foundation has received several applications from deserving students for educational support. Your donation of ₹10,000/- can help the organisation support education for one child for a year; this is less than ₹1,000/- for a month.The on-going pandemic has been devastating for many families with loss of employment or death of a loved one. Families too are struggling to pay the fees of their children besides daily expenses. It is a huge setback and mental stress for many parents trying to support their children's education. Children too have been going through a lot of stress with education going online for the first time. We have received hundreds of applications for scholarships, a desperate need for children to be able to continue their education. Your help today will go a long way in paving the future for that child. We all desire a good education but many are struggling just to be educated, especially during this pandemic.  The Nargis Dutt Foundation provides scholarships to meritorious students from economically weaker sections. During the academic year 2020-21, we provided scholarships to 307 students for their school fees, vocational courses and professional degrees like engineering, Dental, Chartered Accountancy, Medicine. Our goal is to reach out to many more through this campaign. Besides academic fees, we also help the student develop holistically with workshops throughout the year like motivational talks, career guidance and extra curricular activities like dance, music, art and drama. This we believe helps improve the mental health of the child and keeps them motivated to study hard.We support meritorious students from disadvantaged families after complete due diligence like taking an interview with the child/parent and documentation which includes income certificate, fees structure, academic results, adhar card and an NDF online form. We believe in supporting the child year on year till they complete their education. We provide 50% of fees. Fees are paid directly to the school or college. No amount is transferred to personal accounts. Rs.10000 can help in sponsoring the school fees of a child for a year, which is less than Rs1000/- a month. 
 We believe education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. It is the key to end child labour and break the cycle of poverty. NDF has touched the lives of over 50000 students through our education projects in rural school development, scholarships, computer education, e-learning and distribution of school kits.We have seen the positive effects of what an education can provide. Our students who received our scholarships are now working with top companies like TCS, Larsen &amp; Turbo Infotech, Wipro, Ernst and Young and related companies. One of our students is also working in Germany. It is wonderful to see the children of our essential workforce ( who are the backbone of our nation) like auto-rickshaw drivers, house-helps, taxi drivers, embroidery workers, labourers and daily wage earners break the cycle of poverty and change the circumstances of their families.
