Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. When crises strike women and artisans are harder hit by economic impacts. Around the world, both categories generally earn less and save less and disproportionately hold more insecure jobs in the informal economy or service sector with less access to social protections. For many families, school and market closures with social distancing measures have increased the unpaid care and domestic financial crisis, making them less able to take on or balance home economy. A larger share of people are employed in the informal economy which is severely affected, this includes artisans at large. Most of the families we work with or are looking to work with have their dependents working in such fragile informal sector which is highly affected. Many of them have either lost job or have exhausted with the existing balances. Artisans have lost the customers due to lesser demand and poor market conditions. This has negatively impacted the women and artisans at large making then most vulnerable. Such panic situation may create setting negative trend wherein artisans switching their work which may lead to extinction of rich art forms. Hence, this calls for the need to strengthen women and artisans by a collaborative initiative with shared benefits. 
 By broadening the range of income-generating opportunities for such vulnerable women artisans to achieve the sustainable livelihood and dignified enablement we have come up with an unique solution wherein we will be training women from tribal areas across Maharashtra, Gujarat, West-Bengal and Bihar to produce masks by incorporating respective traditional art forms Warli, Tie-&amp;-Die, Kantha and Madhubani upon them. We will be achieving this by providing a more balanced support including market linkage opportunity and by fully exploiting the opportunities offered by emerging digital communication technologies to unify the digital component with the ease of business. Promoting women artists by assuring adequate training and access to resources we will try to handhold and make them self-reliant. The digital marketing and sale of mask as products will be facilitated by our digital application VChimni (www.vchimni.com). Our digital training methodology with handholding support will help women to produce well quality product. This will in turn give them opportunity to evolve in their mask production and its related marketing aspects which will help them to start their own venture individually or in groups. Thus making them self-reliant while reviving the art form in its uniqueness. 
 The express intent of the initiative is to cultivate a pool of women artisans which will not only stand on their own but will also support, uplift and transform many others within their immediate community directly or indirectly. This will be a 15 days course wherein women will be taught regarding basics of tailoring, types of cloth, basics of art respective form/s, and production of fashion accessories using traditional art forms. Currently since the country is in need of a large number of masks to deal with Covid-19 situation, women artisans would be encouraged to design and produce quality masks which can fetch them premium rates. The program will directly benefit 200 low income families by providing a means of sustainable livelihoods to the women artisans from tribal areas. We would also be addressing the women entrepreneurial abilities, dignified livelihood, women equity in family and society. The value boost to the economic empowerment and respite to the families of the women is incalculable. This will have a larger impact wherein two components of the society are blended to attain the sustainable livelihood generation. Our goals are aligned with NDC’s and 2030 SustainableDevelopment Agenda (Goal 5, Goal 8, Goal 11 and Goal 17). Thus enabling the beneficiaries at grassroots level to achieve the national and global impact.

Sustainable Livelihoods among tribal women artisans through Mask Production Initiative

The burden of cancer is increasing worldwide (Global Burden of Disease Cancer Collaboration 2015) and cancer is one of the non-communicable diseases prioritized by the agendas of WHO, the UN, and other international organizations. According to an American Cancer Society report on the global impact of cancer (American Cancer Society 2010), “Cancer causes the highest economic loss of all the 15 leading causes of death worldwide. The economic toll from cancer is nearly 20% higher than heart disease, the second leading cause of economic loss ($895 billion and $753 billion, respectively)”. It is estimated that by 2025 approximately 20 million people will be diagnosed with cancer (Franceschi and Bray 2014)and by 2030, 12.6 million will die per year (World Health Organization 2014c). Unfortunately, the healthcare professionals who are necessary to provide care across the entire cancer continuum, from prevention and detection, to treatment, end-of-life care or survivorship are seriously lacking in Low and Middle Income Countries like ours. This results in devastating mortality statistics in these countries, where 72-75% of patients with cancer die (Farmer et al. 2010) and where 80% of the patients with cancer now live (Knaul, Frenk, and Shulman 2011).  
 Nursing assistants are a critical component of any country’s cancer control plan since they are capable of delivering public health messages for cancer prevention, provide cancer screening (e.g., cervical and breast cancer screening), form the largest group of healthcare providers in any hospital or outpatient clinic setting, and are the backbone of many end-of-life or hospice programs around the world. In addition, nurses who have cared for patients with cancer are in a unique position to continue care after patients are diagnosed as they are often integral members of patient communities, particularly in rural areas. Therefore, in order to establish an effective cancer control program, it is necessary to address the oncology education needs of nursing assistants. This will be done through a unique program (4 months course) for training people with a need for sustainable livelihoods to become cancer caregivers. The Program is envisaged by Center of Lifelong Learning of Tata Institute of Social Sciences and digitally delivered in vulnerable communities in collaboration with Natarajan Education Society. The course curriculum is designed to focus on empathetic, emotive, nutritional, paramedical, physio-therapeutic as well as spiritual aspects of oncological care. 
 The express intent of the Course is to cultivate a pool of Oncology caregivers to function as aides to Cancer patients. This is a 4 month course and candidates successfully completing the certification will receive references or will be placed via organizations working with Cancer patients. The program will directly benefit 600 low income families by providing a means of sustainable livelihoods to the students. It is also observed that more than 60% of the students are female, hence enabling women empowerment in these communities. By creating such care givers in some of the most vulnerable communities the program improves overall community health. We would also be addressing the gaps in the health care systems by providing trained and qualified personnel. This will aid the country in the fight against one of the most debilitating health care challenges of the country and will help provide care to thousands of cancer patients. The value boost to the health care system and respite to the families of the patients is incalculable.
