“The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. The National Association for the Blind, Delhi, is a non-profit organization registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 on April 19, 1979, and has operated out of its current location in R.K Puram, Sector-5, New Delhi since 1986. NAB Delhi has been serving children and adults with visual impairments for the past 43 years now. It has organized a variety of programs for children with visual impairments and additional disabilities. The branch began with a humble start in 1986 with primary level education, a hostel, and an administration/finance section, expanding to higher education, technology training department for the visually impaired, vocational training for the children with multiple disabilities, over the decades. 120 people make up NAB Delhi's team at the moment and have impacted more than 100,000 lives.NAB Delhi's main goal is to enable visually impaired children to live self-sufficient, dignified, and independent lives.For our inexorable pursuit towards our defined endeavors, the organization is conferred with the Best Institution Award by the President of India and International Award for Excellence by MSJE, Government of India.

Please take a look at how we have maintained our excellent standards of education and care in the period April '25 - September '25: <ul><li>Three nutritious meals were provided daily to 180 visually impaired children</li><li>Medical check-ups and hygiene support were delivered, covering routine medications, personal hygiene items, and overall well-being</li><li>Safe and reliable transportation support was provided to the children through regular fuel supply for school, training, and medical visits</li><li>Daily kitchen operations were maintained because of an uninterrupted fuel supply</li><li>Recreational and therapeutic activities were conducted, including festivals, sports, cultural events, and confidence-building sessions for all 180 children</li><li>Special education services were provided by trained special educators, supporting academic development and inclusive learning for all children</li><li>Daily living skills training (mobility, grooming, self-help routines, tactile learning, and basic technology use) was offered regularly to enhance independence</li><li>Technology training was provided to help children use accessible digital tools, screen readers, mobility apps, and assistive devices.</li><li>Dedicated caregiving support was available round-the-clock to ensure safety, emotional well-being, and guided routines for the children.</li></ul> Parents struggle to find schools accessible to their children with visual impairments. As a result, these kids go without education and live their lives permanently wondering if they could have been something more. But with your help, they don't have to wonder. In India, blindness is stigmatized to the point that visually impaired children are at best neglected and in the worst cases, abandoned to their fate. NAB aims to break this vicious cycle of neglect and poverty by educating our kids to carve out their place in the world. Over the financial year 24-25, we have continued to run our shelter home to the highest standards, all with your help. NAB provides nutritious, high-quality meals three times a day to 180 children with visual disabilities while taking care of their medical needs by arranging weekly medical visits. Our top priority remains their education, with special education classes being held daily. Caring so deeply for so many children isn't easy. A part of our funds has gone towards honorariums for our dedicated hostel staff, including - <ul><li>1 Warden for supervision and overall management.</li><li>3 Kitchen Staff for preparing meals.</li><li>3 Kitchen Support Staff for cleaning and assistance.</li><li>5 Maintenance Staff for facility upkeep and sanitation.</li></ul> We ensure our kids receive holistic development. They attend yoga classes, festivals, and are educated on daily living skills. NAB's goal is to mold all of our dear beneficiaries into capable, upstanding citizens of India, and by God's grace and your continued support, we can get there. Please help us help them. We started the day by visiting the various learning centers of NAB including their preparatory school for the blind as well as their sophisticated, technology-infused 'integrated school for the blind' which offers an NIIT-certified, 3-month program for beneficiaries to be comfortable with basic computer skills. We loved the sense of community that graced NAB's shelter home. There was an emphasis on preparing the blind beneficiaries to eventually integrate into mainstream Delhi schools, an initiative designed for them to lead as comfortable a life as possible. Furthermore, we noted that each student received personal attention from their teachers, thus ensuring no child was left behind. The joy of coming to school was written on the children's faces. NAB's shelter is a safe space where the kids learn and play and prepare for their futures. We were impressed with the efficacy and dedication of the staff, who were truly going above and beyond for these kids. For example, they maintain the 'Beyond eyes' initiative where curious participants interact with a pitch-black room all the while trying to navigate the challenges experienced by blind people every single day, thus fostering empathy and perspective. Until then, they need support to provide their beneficiaries with the quality education and lifestyle they deserve. Please help us help them and give now.

Visually impaired, consisting of the blind and low vision are one of the most disadvantaged group in the country. Unfortunately India has the highest population of the blind in the world at 150 million. The 2011 Census and other surveys have revealed that the literacy and employment rate of the visually impaired population is at a dismal state when compared to other sections of the population. There is a deep connection between poverty and disability and hence the visually impaired are not in a position to pay for their own education and other rehabilitation services. Only 10% are graduates and more than 72% are unemployed.Visually impaired need reading material in accessible formats like Braille and Audio, support of special educators for school education, assistive technology training and equipment’s and skill building programs to enhance employability. There is a lack of such services in the mainstream. There is a need to sustain and scale up the immensely successful Integrated Education and Technology Training for the Blind programs of NAB Delhi to empower more visually impaired.  
 NAB Delhi will provide its students support for food and accomodation and quality education in mainstream schools. Till the Corona related restrictions are in place these services will be provided at home using online channels or home visits and later at NAB Delhi’s hostel and classrooms in South Delhi. NAB Delhi has been a pioneer in providing ICT training to visually impaired persons of all age groups. We will continue our training programs and scale it up to reach needy persons from all over the country. We will be providing reading material free of cost through our Digital Library and resolution of queries through our Assistive Technology Helpline. The  Centre for Multi-Disabled will provide the much needed special care and vocational training to deafblind and multi-disabled.  
 Every year 250 blind children will receive life-changing quality education in best schools through our support. All their requirements will be met by the organization. More than 300 visually impaired will become digitally literate and receive employability enhancing trainings. 40,000 visually impaired from all over the country will benefit from our Digital Library and Helpline services.100+ deafblind and multi-disabled will get critical care, support and trainings to become independent. Many teachers, NGOs and the mainstream society will benefit from our awareness and capacity building programs.
