“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. National Society For Equal Opportunities for the Handicapped, India popularly known by the acronym NASEOH India is a NGO founded in 1968 with the initiative and leadership of the famous Cricketer and the philanthropist late Shri Vijay Merchant. The range of services aimed at providing a comprehensive need based rehabilitation support to the people with disabilities include health and prevention, early intervention, education and vocational training, community based rehabilitation of the rural disabled, employment &amp; income generation options, physical restorative services, advocacy &amp; awareness. By design NASEOH Extends this support to the poorest of poor amongst the disabled free of any charges.The focus area of the programs is to build capacities of adult disabled in the age group of 18 to 35 years with appropriate vocational skill development and to prepare them to access employment and income generation options on equal terms.On an average NASEOH extend the various interventions to around 6000 people with disabilities directly every year, with its need based multiple interventions.

Person with disabilities naturally have an aspirant to be part of the main stream society as equals. However, there are many challenges &amp; road blocks. Occupation &amp; employment plays a major role in person journey to be accepted as an equal in the society. Many of the disabled youth, on account of the situational barriers find it difficult to get the jobs and the occupation and thus the challenge of economic independence. Appropriate skill set to match the competitive job requirements is becomes an essential part to overcome this challenge. 
 NASEOH as one of its core activity runs a vocational training center where adult people with disabilities in the age group of 18 to 40 years are provided the vocational skill development inputs with the intention of preparing them to take up the employment and income generation activities. The beneficiaries are screened and assessed with the help of social worker, paramedical professionals, trade instructors etc. and training trade is decided. The current training trades of training at the vocational training center are bakery &amp; confectionery, assembly(paper craft), tailoring &amp; embroidery, nursery &amp; gardening, welding &amp; fabrication, pottery &amp; ceramic, computer skills and data processing. 
 Through this training process the necessary job skill sets, work habits and work culture is developed in the beneficiary group and their employability. Opportunities and facilitation are provided to the trained persons with disabilities to access the job situations and income generation options are provided. The trained people with disabilities would have enhance confidence, required grooming and desire corporate etiquette to procure and sustain the gainful employment.
