The Eastern Himalaya Program (EHP) of the Nature Conservation Foundation works across three states in the eastern region of India – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and northern West Bengal. In some of the sites, especially in Arunachal Pradesh, we have been working for over 20 years. In most of the sites where we work, proper medical facilities are located at great distances, over unreliable and landslide-prone roads. Often, the nearest healthcare facility is either a Primary Health Centre (PHC), Community Health Centre (CHC) and Health Sub-centre (SC). After consultation with local health authorities in NCF’s project sites, we found that many of these local health centres are poorly equipped to handle Covid-19 cases. This is particularly worrying as prospects of a third wave become more real, and with the northeastern region predicted to be the epicenter. We wish to assist and supplement the health centers with Covid medical supplies and equipment to better equip them to handle cases in anticipation of the next wave. Our target amount is INR 5340000 
 We reached out to 51 individual health centres across four states (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, northern West Bengal and Nagaland) to gather their medical needs. Additionally, with the help of our local networks, we identified families in some sites that needed basic ration supplies. The funds raised will enable us to supplement the supplies needed by the local health centers to handle current Covid cases and prepare for future surges.The funds will be utilized to purchase Covid-care medical essentials for District Hospitals, CHCs, PHCs and sub-centres in some of the remote villages in parts of Northeast India where we currently work or have worked in the past. The items and amounts required have been determined by health practitioners.The supplies and relief material will be distributed by our own field teams in most of the sites. In some sites where we currently do not have people on the ground, our local friends and well-wishers will help distribute the supplies.  
 The Impact will be: (1) Medically equipped health centres that are able to handle Covid cases locally in difficult to access rural areas. (2) Immediate medical help for community members at each site. (3) Ration supplies for some families at one site who have been economically affected by the pandemic.

Covid preparedness and relief for North-east India in and around wildlife protected areas

Nature Conservation Foundation has been carrying out research and conservation activities since 2003 in and around the Pakke Tiger Reserve (PTR), an extraordinarily rich tiger reserve in Arunachal Pradesh that is also a part of the Indo-Burma global biodiversity hotspot.We believe that children are the future guardians of these forests and it is important that they get to experience the forests and wildlife in and around Pakke through a planned year-round curriculum.Studies have shown that deforestation and loss of wildlife causes an increase in infectious diseases and this COVID-19 pandemic is a stark reminder of our dysfunctional relationship with nature.In 2017, we began our formal Nature Education Program in villages around PTR. The main highlight of this program is the annual Nature Education Camps inside the Pakke Tiger Reserve done in partnership with Arunachal Pradesh Forest DepartmentThese camps and year-round activities are free of cost for the schools. The Forest Department provides some logistical support and forest guards for the safety of kids during the camps. We cover the travel, food, equipment and honorarium for the team.This year, due to the unprecedented crisis we have been unable to raise enough funds for these camps.Through this campaign our target is to raise INR 535000 by the end of September 2020.   
 We have set up Pakke Nature clubs with seven schools (5 government, 2 private) in Seijosa. Every year, we conduct three-day and one-day camps in November-December for students (Class 5-9) from these schools. This is done in partnership with the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department.We have also held two training workshops for our field staff, teachers of the seven schools, field staff of the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department (serving in Pakke) as well as local youth to equip them to understand the importance of nature education and to carry out nature education activities for students/ other members of the community.We have a team of ~10-12 people who help us run the 3 different modules during the camps. These modules were designed by Dr. Pranav Trivedi, who conducted these camps (for the first three years) as well as the two training workshops. Through these camps we (1) Activate/sharpen sensory perception through specific and focused activities for each sense(2) Demonstrate through activities important ecological concepts of energy flow and cycling of materials.(3) Provide time for solitude, reflection and sharing for processing all of the above. 
 The objective of these nature camps is to immerse the local children in nature and help develop a sense of pride and connectedness with their natural heritage. This is a long-term program where we aim to engage with the same students, more than once and in different ways to gradually strengthen their bond with the natural world rather than making it a one-time experience. This also helps us better evaluate the impact of the program and create stewardship for conservation of Pakke and its rich biodiversity with which the local community has strong cultural and ecological connections.Since 2017, we have engaged with a total of 500 students from 7 schools (5 government, 2 private) in Seijosa from class 5-9 through these camps and many more through yearly activities like nursery visit, bird walks, nature art sessions, and other events on important days (World Environment day, Wildlife Week, or the Pakke Paga Hornbill Festival).This programme is a long-term intervention that may well go beyond 10 years and strengthen nature conservation with the support of local community.

The ProblemLocal communities interact with forests every day, and some are heavily dependent on forests for daily needs and livelihoods, making conservation awareness important for them to understand the vital role of wildlife in nature. In landscapes like Cauvery and Malai Mahadeshwara (MM Hills) Wildlife Sanctuaries, awareness and education are important as a lack thereof can result in unintentional situations where both, the people and wildlife are harmed. Threats within this landscape include habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, wild meat consumption, over-extraction of natural resources and vehicular collisions; issues that need to be communicated with the people to promote a better understanding and help foster positive attitudes towards conservation, wildlife and help reduce the influence of superstitions.It is thus, imperative to bring a shift in people's perceptions to instill a sense of ownership and responsibility for their land and its preservation.With students and children being the leaders of tomorrow who could potentially reshape the world, we need to maintain a sharp focus on imparting conservation awareness and wildlife education to ensure a holistic and sustained approach to conservation. 
 Our ApproachWe’ll devise and deliver a variety of awareness and educational programmes to promote positive understanding towards wildlife conservation in the Cauvery - MM Hills landscape, while also acquainting them with the wildlife in these protected areas and their ecological roles.We will use a combination of interactive methodologies such as street plays, visual imagery, videos, and games to engage students and teachers from schools and colleges in nearby villages. We’ll also engage with local leaders and communities, local media personnel, and Karnataka Forest Department staff.Through Holematthi Nature Information Center, a result of our outreach initiatives established in 2018 in that landscape, we will:<ol><li>Organise visits for school students to come and learn about the wildlife and conservation issues through games and interactive activities. </li><li>Conduct street plays in the villages in and around the protected areas to communicate conservation issues to the villagers</li><li>Meet with local religious and political leaders to share updates regarding conservation activities in their area, and garner local support</li><li>Design and distribute relevant, local language wildlife guides, booklets, and awareness posters to groups visiting Holematthi, and to local leaders and villages to share with the masses.</li></ol> 
 Desired ImpactWe’ll highlight the need to protect biodiversity, and the detrimental effects of fragmentation, indiscriminate development, poaching, consuming wild meat, fuelwood gathering, and more.We aim to enhance nature and wildlife awareness among the communities living within these impact areas, with a strong focus on students and young adults to set into motion:<ul><li>The conditioning of a new generation of environmentally sensitive individuals that proactively support and participate in conservation activities, and are advocates of their landscape and rich heritage, </li><li>A community-based shift in actions from consuming wild meat regularly to discouraging poaching and wild meat consumption without the involvement of legal structures. Communities will be empowered to make well-informed sustainable and healthy choices for themselves and their surrounding forests,</li><li>Increased public support and favour towards wildlife conservation, and important inputs to wildlife management plans that are landscape-relevant and inclusive of the need to be beneficial to both, the communities and wildlife, </li><li>Equip key local decision-makers, stakeholders and communities with the necessary knowledge to directly drive potential changes to policy and management plans, and</li><li>Gently dispel superstitions and myths by opening the doors for sound knowledge resulting from a confluence of traditional knowledge and science. </li></ul>

Conservation awareness and environmental education to save tigers, elephants and other wildlife

The more we venture into the outdoors and look at plants, animals and insects that surround us, the closer we feel to nature and develop a connection with the natural world around us. In school, children learn about problems facing the planet; but not about why they should care. For this, children must appreciate the natural world for its own sake. While we often watch documentaries about far away places and forests on TV and hear about hummingbirds and Bald Eagles from other countries, we sometimes forget to look into our backyard to appreciate the bright blue sunbird or the colourful little signature spider. We strive to bring nature outside our windows and in our backyards, closer to children, parents and teachers. India has a vast diversity of languages and we wish to create resources that introduce children to nature in our backyards in several Indian languages and in this project, we start with Hindi!   
 As part of the Education and Public Engagement programme of <a href="https://www.ncf-india.org/education-and-public-engagement" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">Nature Conservation Foundation</a>, the <a href="https://www.early-bird.in/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">Early Bird</a>, <a href="https://www.natureclassrooms.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">Nature Classrooms</a> and <a href="https://www.seasonwatch.in/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">Seasonwatch</a> teams have been creating locally relevant educational resources for children to create interest, excitement and wonder for the natural world.With the aim of creating and distributing material in regional languages, the three teams are collaborating to put together a Nature Education Kit (प्रकृति का पिटारा) in Hindi. We are working with partners in the field of education in the northern states of India including Bihar, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra to reach the schools in these regions. Through these partners, we will reach ~200 schools, including government and small scale private schools interested in using the nature education material in their curriculum. These can be photocopied and used to engage all children. </li><li>Pocket guides on birds and trees, that are useful as identification aids while on a nature walk</li><li>an India specific Biodiversity Booklet (made in collaboration with the Wipro Foundation) that is a guide for teachers to engage children on various aspects of biodiversity. We have successfully raised funds for developing content and designing the materials that go into the kit. The material is ready to be printed and shipped to the schools and partners that need them. We are now seeking support from you to reach the target audience. 
 We routinely create educational material in regional languages and are currently working on increasing the reach of these resources. We believe that creating excitement and interest about nature among children can help them get started on their journey of nature watching and appreciation. Such nature learning facilitated by engaging resources would help create voices for nature and conservation in the future. Educational material is often largely created in English and by creating material in regional languages we hope to reach a different audience and encourage them to explore the rich biodiversity around them. In this campaign we are mainly seeking help for printing and distribution of the Hindi Nature education kit to the ~200 schools in the states mentioned above. The total price per kit is ~ 2000 INR and our target amount for this campaign is 4,00,000 INR.  After the campaign is concluded, the three teams will conduct an online training session for the beneficiaries of the kit, to familiarize them with the contents of the kit and how to use the materials effectively in their learning spaces.
