If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. At Neev, we uphold the belief that Education is a Journey of Learning which helps an individual to Explore, Create, Struggle, and Experience; while the purpose of Education is Well-Being and Peace. For a child this journey starts in the initial years when s/he learns to acquire the ability to make meaning in the process of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The foundation of Literacy is laid since birth when the child starts picking up on listening followed by speaking, reading, and writing until the age of 8 years. These are the years when a child is exposed to elementary schooling, which prepares her for the process of Life, a never-ending journey of Learning. Literacy is the key to unlocking the doors for Learning and therefore leading to social and economic empowerment as a grown-up individual. We’ve designed a module that delivers fun-based experiential learning in the native language of the child. At its core, the module has a “child first” philosophy, supplemented by training teachers in innovative teaching methodology. At present, we support 6 low-income Gujarati medium schools in Vadodara which cater to the needs of more than 10 classrooms &amp; teachers through a mix of frequent workshops, training &amp; meetings. Moreover, to ensure effective delivery by teachers at the grass-root level, we provide constant classroom support to develop as well as transform them into better facilitators &amp; empowered enablers. We have realized that we needed a strong on-the-ground presence, with quick follow-ups and regular feedback, otherwise, we would lose out on the momentum created during the workshops.

“A” for Apple, “B” for Ball, “C” for... and so it goes. Why can’t our minds come up with anything other than an apple for “A”? We are taught that the color of the sky is blue. Haven’t we seen a pink sky too?Concepts learned at school remain so deeply ingrained in our brains that we can seldom think beyond the usual or obvious. The education system does not encourage the development of inquisitiveness in young students. Only 37.4% of kids below six are able to recognize at least letters and only 25.6% can do additions, the survey (ASER 2019) has found. The lack of age-appropriate skills in the early years is alarming as this can impact the entire education supply chain in India. Teachers, who are supposed to be a wondrous source of knowledge - deliver standardized and outdated content with rote learning methods. This is an extremely alarming issue which we at Neev Shikshan Santha are aiming to resolve. 
 Early Childhood Education ideally consists of flexible, multi-faceted, multi-level, play-based, activity-based, and discovery-based learning about, e.g., alphabets, languages, numbers, counting, colors, shapes, indoor and outdoor play, puzzles and logical thinking, problem-solving, drawing, painting, and other visual art, craft, drama and puppetry, music and movement. We’ve designed a fellowship module for teachers (on the job) that deliver fun-based experiential learning in the native language of the child. At its core, the module has a “child first” philosophy, supplemented by training teachers in innovative teaching methodology. It is well-understood that young children learn and grasp non-trivial concepts more quickly in their home language/mother tongue.

Moreover, to ensure effective delivery by teachers at the grass-root level, we provide constant classroom support to develop as well as transform them into better facilitators &amp; empowered enablers.We focus on (1) Oral language with Literacy Skills. (2) Drawing and Independent writing as forms of expression. (3) Literacy instruction and learning must be integrated into a comprehensive, concurrent model of literacy instruction. (4) A variety of instructional routines for teaching literacy, such as, Read Aloud, Shared Reading, Guided reading-writing, Independent reading-writing workshops.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has compelled learners to stay away from school. While children from better resourced backgrounds are able to go ahead with online learning, there is a vast majority of children in the country who have little to no access to the kind of basic technology that can support online learning. Besides, schools will be among the last to open. 

Through this initiative, we plan to reach out to more than 700 early childhood learners enrolled at our partner schools by creating contextual and meaningful learning experiences that can be conveyed via phone calls, messages & personal visits.

With the funds that we raise with your support, we plan to train teachers and cover the implementation costs for this project that will allow 4-8 year olds continue to build numeracy and literacy through lockdown.
