“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. It will be very difficult to sustain it unless we get help,” he added. One act of your kindness can save these abandoned women, with no one in this world, from struggling on the streets to survive. Poverty is a perennial problem in the tribal area of Jawhar. People have been living in this state for generations with very little improvement in their conditions. The pandemic has rendered a large population particularly in rural India unemployed – Loss of livelihood coupled with “Employability” of graduates are the two problems that we are attempting to solve. The population of Jawhar is 1.6 Lacs…approx. 25% of this population is living below poverty line and the average monthly household income of the people living here is INR 5,000. We also understand that the unemployment rate among the local youth is close to 20% (if employment through NREGA is not considered, the unemployment rate among the local is as high as 45%) While unemployment and lack of entrepreneurship are some of the main reasons for poverty, we believe making people self-reliant wherein they are able to support themselves and their families in the long run is one of the best ways to address the problem. 
 NeevJivan Foundation plans to address this problem by creating opportunities for sustainable livelihood with a three-pronged approach – a.    Drive Awareness: Drive awareness of the livelihood opportunities of among the beneficiaries so that they could make a conscious decision about the choice of vocation.b.    Impart Skills: Impart vocational skills (technical knowledge) for the chosen vocation along with skills for entrepreneurship to the beneficiaries.c.    Access to Funds: Provide access to FUNDs so that the beneficiaries can start a small scale business venture of their own. We believe that by doing so, we will be able to introduce an alternate vocation in each family (which is beyond agriculture) and in turn help in increasing their source of income and standard of living in the long run. 
 The positive impact of our work towards the wellbeing of our fellow citizens is all that we aspire for as we set out on our journey. We have set a few impactful milestones for our organization and wish to measure our performance on these fronts – a)   No. of candidates trained every year (at least 250 in one location)b)   No. of candidates successfully setting up small scale business ventures every year (at least 100)c)   Increase in average household income for our students over a period of one year (at least 4-5X, i.e. 20,000 to 25,000 p.m.) We believe making the people self-reliant wherein they are able to support themselves and their families in the long run are one of the best ways to address the problem. Over the next 5 years, we plan to reach out to as many underserved citizens of our country as possible across multiple geographies and help them in increasing their household income and in turn improve their standard of living. Our vision is to create opportunities for sustainable livelihood and enterprise for every fellow citizen and thereby reduce the asymmetry of income among them in the long run.
