“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. NSVV, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Vividoddesha Vedike, a society registered for a non-profit started in the year 2004 at Narasingapur Village, Donimalai Post, Sandur Taluk, Bellary Dist. Karnataka, with an objective of impacting the lives of the underprivileged by providing preliminary education under the name of “JNANA GANGOTRI VIDYA SCHOOL” to children of the people who have been affected by the mining issues aroused around areas of Sandur Taluk, Bellary District. The main vision was to give free education to children belonging to schedule caste/tribe and the economically weaker section around 6-8 villages at no cost for education and transportation facilities. Eventually, the low-cost fees were asked to pay for those only who can afford them. However, the transportation facility was free with the help of trustees/ members of the society with the help of a few local individual donors. The education started with lower kg- LKG and now it’s full-fledged to the 10th standard under the state board of Karnataka.By now around 9 batches of 10th students passed. The results were very good and the school was recognised by local people for the good results. There are a lot of extracurricular activities being organised timely with a lot of motivational approaches. There are multiple students after passing out of school, continued their college and a good number of them are placed in various organisations with technical degrees.There were a few small projects done locally for women, and mothers of the studying kids to create empowerment opportunities such as tailoring, the local small businesses etc. along with the main objective of educationWe have around 20 and odd number of teachers and supporting staff to undertake all societies’ activitiesSanduru (often written as Sandur) is a town in the Bellary District in the Indian state of Karnataka. Sandur was ruled by the Ghorpade royal family of the Marathas. Sandur, with 91 and odd villages and a town surrounded by villages of Dowlthpur, Ramgad, Swamihalli, Donimalai, is set among green mountains, valleys, and deep gorges. These areas have been resources of minerals, majorly Iron ore. Because of this mining in a big way had been an occupation and organisations like NMDC, JSW etc. are placed here. Recent past (around 8-10 years) there was a boom in the raising of these minerals and exporting. Due to various reasons, mining activities have stopped and many people have lost their livelihood as their daily earnings have been hampered. NSVV is trying to help the affected economically weaker section to bridge the gap.We are trying to reach out to such five districts, Bellary, Hospet, Koppal, Raichur and Yadgir, with initiatives to support Education, Livelihood, Differently abled, Skill development and Women Empowerment on priority. Raichur and Yadgir being part of ASPIRATIONAL DISTRICTS in the national CSR support on priorities, we are trying to address development sectors with the help of CSR support from individuals and corporates in the said segments.We are focussing now on upgrading the current facility of the school to modernise it with smart classes, lab facility etc. and to add a hostel facility to the underprivileged from all 5 listed districts to start with for around 100-150 children of the needy.
