For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. In Financial Year 2019-20, Niramaya Health Foundation screened and supported more than 2 thousand adolescent girls from slums in Govandi, Mumbai. More than 75% girls found to be anemic. They all were treated and their parents were counselled to understand the ill-effects of Anemia on growth and overall development of adolescents. While working in the community to address the nutritional issues of growing girls, Niramaya came across various myths and misconceptions about the dietary practices among the community which affect the health status of women. Girls are attracted to junk and packaged food rather than homemade cooked food in this community. There is a common belief that food if nutritious, it will definitely be tasteless or very expensive. To address these misbeliefs, Niramaya planned to organize the Kishori Poshan Melava i.e. Adolescent girls gathering. Following activities were planned during this event: 1. The common belief of greater development, better living conditions, and more prevalent resources in urban areas have masked the real picture of urban poor. Urban slums are extremely vulnerable communities, with slum populations ranking among the poorest and most under-served groups in terms of health. Problems with housing, sanitation, pollution, and physical space, as well as lack of access to water, electricity and health services make communities more prone to ill health.Statistics for the health of women and children within urban slums of Mumbai are depressingly low with:•	Infant mortality rate of 26 per thousand live births (compared with State figure of 16 per thousand live births)•	Over 41% of children under six years of age in the slums of Mumbai are underweight. 71% found to be stunted which is significantly higher than the country’s average i.e. 47%. ( NFHS Data)•	31% of children receive health checkup from doctor/ other health professionals within 2 days of birth•	45.6% of children are fully immunized as per the protocol of universal immunization program•	More than 50% of women are anemic •	Only 43.5% of mothers received full Antenatal care•	52.7% of women living in slums in Mumbai consumed iron and folic acid (IFA) tablets during pregnancy at least 90 days.(DLHS Mumbai data)Thus, these statistics demonstrate a clear need for the development of public health intervention within the urban poor communities of Mumbai. 
 Niramaya implements various health and nutrition programs to address these health concerns of slums population. Following health initiatives are being implemented by Niramaya in Mumbai slums:<ol><li>Nutrition interventions for identified malnourished children up to 10 years of age- Children are assessed for their nutritional status and treated as per their status</li><li>Antenatal Care Program- Pregnant women are counseled and referred to the government health post for early ANC registration and complete pregnancy care</li><li>Postnatal care including family planning and Child Immunization- Lactating mothers are oriented in effective breastfeeding and weaning practices to ensure proper growth and development of babies. Family planning is promoted among them for appropriate spacing between two deliveries. Child immunization program is also implemented in association with government health post</li><li>Adolescent Health Program- Adolescent anemia detection and reduction program is implemented to address the health issues and nutritional deficiencies faced by adolescent girls. Identified anemic girls are supported with appropriate treatment and supplementation</li><li>Behavioral change communications campaigns are run in all project locations to ensure healthy behavioral practices among beneficiaries and other community people</li></ol> 
 Through these activities and programs, following impact is seen in the communities to cater to:<ol><li>Increased awareness among community about health and nutrition component</li><li>Reduced pregnancy related complications among intervened expectant mothers</li><li>Reduction of malnutrition rate among children</li><li>Reduction in anemia among adolescent girls</li></ol>

‘Vatsalya’ - Improving Maternal and Child Health

The pandemic has threatened India's food security landscape across all four indicators: availability, access, stability, and utilization of resources. It could further intensify the existing problem of malnutrition among children. To ensure good health and nutrition to children from urban slums of Mumbai, Niramaya proposes to provide two meals a day to children for two weeks with every donation of ₹700 made towards this project. A donation of ₹1,000 shall ensure nutritional supplementation to one child for a span of three months.There are about 189.2 million undernourished people in India; a majority of whom are children. Malnutrition and the widespread prevalence of stunting, wasting, and nutritional deficiencies among children are well-recognized elements of India's profile in the Global Hunger Index. In fact, approximately 60 million, which is roughly about half of all children in India are underweight, about 45 per cent are stunted, 21 per cent are wasted, 57 per cent are vitamin A deficient, and 75 per cent are anemic. Malnutrition has become the most significant contributor to the under-five mortality rate in India.The pandemic has threatened India's food security landscape across all four indicators: availability, access, stability, and utilization of resources. It could further intensify the existing problem of malnutrition among children. The country-wide lockdown led to a sudden cessation of economic activity and triggered large-scale unemployment. People often adopt coping mechanisms such as purchasing less food, substituting wholesome food with less nutritious alternatives, and decreasing the number of meals eaten on a day-to-day basis to deal with the crisis and reduced incomes. This would worsen the nutritional parameters of our children. 
 To ensure good health and nutrition to children from urban slums of Mumbai, Niramaya proposed following health interventions:<ol><li>Nutritional assessment of children and treatment of identified malnourished children</li><li>Nutritional supplementation to children below 10 years of age</li><li>Dry ration kit distribution to families with children, pregnant women and lactating mothers</li><li>Distribution of protein powder to children, pregnant women and lactating mothers</li><li>Early screening of children for detection of COVID 19 ( Fever and oxygen examination)</li><li>Supporting home isolated COVID positive children and their care takers by distributing COVID safety kits. COVID safety kit will include- N 95 mask to care taker, 3 ply mask for child, Digital Thermameter, Pulse Oxymeter, Hand sanitizer etc.</li><li>Ensuring parents to be completely vaccinated before the third wave of COVID 19 hits back to Mumbai city</li></ol> 
 These activities will ensure good nutritional status of children and improved immunity to fight against COVID 19 and other communicable infections. These interventions will ensure healthy growth and development of children which will improve their learning abilities and academic performance. These will also reduce financial burden on families resulting in reduction of stress and anxiety among family members. These interventions will protect our children during this pandemic and help us to develop strong and healthy citizens for India.
