For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. By then, Preeti had spent years of hardship as a homeless person. When Ashadeep found Preeti, she was malnourished and was diagnosed with severe mental illness. After undergoing years of medical treatment and therapy at Ashadeep, Preeti has seen substantial recovery. She feels glad to have finally found a safe home.Dr Anjana Goswami along with her husband Mukul, started Ashadeep Day Rehabilitation Centre four decades back and since then, the couple have rescued over 1,200 mentally ill homeless from the streets. Without a safe shelter, they are subjected to constant sexual abuse on the streets,” shares Dr Anjana while shedding light on the extreme difficulties faced by homeless mentally ill patients. They have been rescuing the homeless from the streets and giving them a safe home for decades now.A beacon of hope for mentally ill homeless"Our main objective is to provide the best treatment and psychiatric care to those we rescue so they can live active lives. We enable our residents to live a life of dignity through medication and different therapies. We also try to find the families of those patients who have lost their way home and reunite them with their loved ones. To date, we have been able to reintegrate over 1000 people with their families after completion of treatment,” the NGO founder says.The nonprofit not only provides treatment to the people they rescue but also gives them skills training and a wide array of employment opportunities so they can live with their heads held high.But after four decades of selfless service, Dr Anjana today faces a challenge like never before. We are an NGO, a registered society since 2006 with 12A and 80G certification and have worked with several central and state governments and institutions to strengthen the existing systems. We work in the area of education, water and sanitation and culture. One of our most popular programs is Ghummakkad Narain and Kathakar which are reading and storytelling programs started with UNESCO. These programs have their own websites and social media identities. In our COVID relief work last year we helped with a truckload of rations to the migrant population and feeding of stray animals. This year too we are helping with rations to those underprivileged who are out of work, feeding stray animals which have continued for the entire year and in addition working to provide medical help and equipment to the needy, We are working with the established institutions, NGOs and reputed community workers to streamline the efforts so that people approaching these institutions are looked after and their capacity is built for future emergencies as well.

India is currently facing the second wave of covid 19 where it is facing an acute shortage of medical equipment. Since mid-April there has been an acute shortage of oxygen cylinders and concentrators, patients everywhere are working telephone lines and running from hospital to hospital to secure an oxygen bed or an oxygen cylinder. Delhi was one of the most severely hit cities where we started our work and have started our work to build an oxygen plant. The demand now has moved to the rural areas of India. Given our work in Delhi, we have been approached by several smaller cities and rural areas to help provide medical equipment like oxygen cylinders, concentrators, oximeters, infrared thermometers, masks etc. To support the existing efforts of the hospitals and local institutions we are working together with the relevant government authorities, local hospitals and NGOs to help COVID-19 patients receive the required medical help and equipment. We are focusing our efforts in Himachal Pradesh and few other rural areas &amp; providing them with the necessary aid of relief material namely, medical equipment. 
 <ul><li>The district hospitals of Himachal Pradesh are in urgent need of D type oxygen cylinders, 10 Litre oxygen concentrators, oximeters and NRB masks. Their total requirement at the moment is 500 D type oxygen cylinders, 300 oxygen concentrators of 10 Litre capacity, 10,000 oximeters and 10,000 NRB masks.</li><li>As a start we would like to offer 10% of their total requirement in Phase I and subsequently another 10% in Phase II. We would review the situation at the end of each phase and inform the donor.</li><li>We hope to provide medical equipment in a phased manner to the state of Himachal Pradesh. For Phase I &amp; II we intend to provide 100 D type oxygen cylinders, 60 oxygen concentrators of 10 Litre capacity, 2000 NRB masks, 2000 oximeters, 100 infrared thermometers and 55000 N95 masks.</li></ul> 
 With medical equipment, we can help save the lives of numerous people especially in the rural belt which have no access to good medical health care.
