For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. We've got two families reach out to us for the treatment of their children - of 9 year old Priyadarshini and 11 year old Yogeshwaran - who both need Complex Open Heart surgeries as soon as possible. 11 year old Yogeshwaran is the son of a lorry driver and a homemaker, and has been diagnosed with Tricuspid Atresia, and has to undergo Fenestrated Fontan Completion (a complex open heart surgery) immediately. With a monthly income of only Rs. 5,000, his family cannot meet the cost of the treatment he needs to survive, which comes up to an estimate of Rs. 3,50,000. 9 year old Priyadarshini, daughter of a daily wage worker and a homemaker, has also been waiting eagerly for her lifesaving treatment to cure her TOF with Pulmonary Atresia. Priyadarshini's ailment began when she accidentally ingested kerosene as a 3 year old, and needs to undergo a Sternotomy and VSD Surgical Closure to repair the damage caused to her fragile heart. Her treatment will cost approximately Rs. 4,30,000. Her family's monthly income is Rs. 4,000 and her family is struggling to raise money for her Complex Open Heart Surgery. The aforementioned costs include their surgeries, their stay at the hospital, and medication among other things. Even a contribution as small as Rs. 100 will go a long way in supporting these children.
