And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, Of the 250 the children rescued from abuse and exploitation, around 70 of them are HIV positive. There are many education gaps in India but the most unfair one is caused by gender bias where only 30% of girls get to class 10. The Avasar Foundation addresses this issue by supporting education for girls from poor families.Despite attaining 98 % enrolment into primary schools after the Right to Education Act made education free and compulsory, socio-economic factors continue to affect drop-out rates in secondary schools - especially for girls living below the poverty line. Many leave to work and earn to support family income, get married, so parents have one less mouth to feed.With our vision being “no child will discontinue education due to financial hardship”, since 2013, The Avasar Foundation has been supporting meritorious young women with full scholarships from high school to three to four years of a degree or professional studies.We have extended scholarship support to 52 girls in Bengaluru, and hope to expand their work to other cities across the country.

One survey of the "out-of-school children" reported that about 62% were girls; they make up two-thirds of all illiterate 15 to 24-year-olds. The reality for many girls in India is harsh, with young women having little control over their lives. Almost 50 per cent are married before age 18, just 30 per cent graduate from 10th grade, and less than 40 per cent work for pay.This is the target group for Avasar to extend support for education up to employment. Ability is nothing without Opportunity.The Project extends financial support to arrest the discontinuation of education due to financial hardship. By taking away the pressure off from the family, a meritorious student will be able to complete her education for potential employment.The program also supports sustenance allowance in addition to payment of tuition fee and addresses all aspects of needs as a college student.This project is about educating and developing 12 girls to complete their entire education from Grade 11 until Graduation.Upon completion of their education, they have a better chance of getting employed, choosing a better partner, understanding their rights, and leading better lives.

Children from age 3.5 to 5.5 years cannot go to formal early childhood education since preschools do not exist in government schools, and private preschools are so much more expensive.Some pre-primary schooling happens in Anganwadi, but a more structured approach can help the kids better prepare for Class 1 and above. 
 Avasar Foundation has set up 5 pre-primary schools for children facing financial hardships at a government primary school in Seegehalli, Bangalore. The second and third schools are getting ready now in Bangalore and Gurgaon. Sixth unit opens in Bangalore this AY 2023-24 onwards.

The sad fact is that not everyone is privileged to own a device that supports the online way of education. In the already challenged situation for the under-privileged, the children would get even more impacted with the insecurity of not having a device. This could get worsened to the fact that, they give up their education too. An already existing 'Digital Divide' would only get deeper. 
 Avasar Foundation would mobilize resources to procure Mobile Devices (Tabs) for at least one hundred Children from low-income families. This would help them participate in online classes more consistently instead of waiting for return of the parents from work to use the device.
