“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted life since 2020. The impact on the lives of the poor including those in our intervention areas have been severe. Beyond the national health emergency, the economic consequences of a lockdown left many without jobs. With the second wave picking up pace in April’ 2021, Mumbai is in the midst of another lockdown. Through our donors and supporters, we continue our relief efforts. 
 Despite Mumbai's relative success in curbing the spread of COVID-19, strict lockdowns and curfews mean that many families are deprived of a source of income. Through our food distribution drive, we are distributing essential food supplies like wheat, rice, lentils, pulses, sugar, oil, salt and also supplementary supplies like soaps, detergent, masks, sanitary pads, sanitisers and masks. Have supported 3500 families in 2020, we have started our initiative and as of 21st May' 2021, we have distributed kits to nearly 900 families more. We are so supporting labourers, homeless and people on the streets with cooked meals in a smaller capacity. 
 We want to ensure that people in our intervention areas do not sleep hungry. As we battle a deadly pandemic, it is important to realise the needs of those who are impacted financially due to these circumstances. Through distribution of these supplies, we also take an opportunity to educate people on COVID appropriate behaviour, vaccine hesitancy and the importance of staying engaged academically.

Football and Life Skills Programme - Education With A Kick

OSCAR Foundation is a football for development non-profit dedicated to empowering children and youth in low-income communities in India. OSCAR uses football as a tool to deliver education and life skills sessions enabling children and youth to become role models in their community. Through the lockdown, we realized that a number of children were unable to participate in our football activities as they did not have their own footballs at home. 
 To overcome this challenge, our coaches taught our beneficiaries how to make footballs with newspapers and cardboard so they could get involved. Meanwhile, many of our supporters came together in 2021 and sponsored some footballs. We then started distributing footballs to our beneficiaries in Cuffe Parade, Colaba, Thane and hope to expand to other locations in Mumbai very soon with your support. We have also distributed footballs to children at Yadgir, Karnataka where we operate our rural project. Each football costs $7 or Rs 500 (approx)For $35 or Rs Rs 2500, you can support 5 children with footballs. 
 This campaign is also an attempt to encourage our children to practice and play at home and not loiter on the streets especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. It helps them keep up the positivity and creativity during these gloomy times. Support us in our goal to distribute a football to each of our 3500 OSCAR children.

Kick at Home (A project to help underprivileged children learn football and enable their right to play)

According to a report by PUMA - Nielsen (2023), kids surveyed in India are physically active for a mere 86 minutes out of the WHO-recommended 420 minutes or more per week. India is a country where lack of physical activity has long been a problem, especially in low-income communities where young people face more hurdles to access safe spaces to play sports, especially in crowded urban cities like Mumbai. With the purpose of uplifting the health of local young people of Mumbai, OSCAR Foundation and Mumbai City FC have launched the ‘Healthy Goals’ initiative. Mumbai City FC in partnership with OSCAR Foundation launches ‘Healthy Goals’, a new initiative to empower healthier lives for Mumbai’s youth through football . This unique initiative combines donations match funding* with community football training for young leaders in Mumbai, who will use football to improve the physical health of young local Mumbaikars by providing access to quality sports infrastructure. The pitch developed will be used to deliver regular football and life skills sessions and leadership trainings for youth from underserved communities.The initiative focuses on two main aspects: providing funding and training to support youth-led football programs, as well as constructing and improving community football pitches in Mumbai for the benefit of local young people.*City Football Group Limited (CFG) will match donations to the Healthy Goals Program, up to a limit of £125k (INR 1.25 crore) for any single Club, or a maximum of £500k (INR 5 crore) matched globally across all CFG clubs participating in this round of funding.We aim to engage young people from underserved communities within Mumbai to get them physically active by offering weekly football session. By developing these pitches in the vicinity of underserved communities, we will make available safe spaces for young people to play and keep active. The impact of community pitches extend far beyond the boundaries of the sport.
