For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. Promoting Violence-free Lives for Women in India:1420 cases of domestic violence were handled by our women support centers and community-based committees, 1100 women survivors were supported for accessing government schemes, and over 800 were linked to livelihood opportunities. 20054 women and men, and 23480 youth were reached out to on the issues of violence, and received trainings on various laws, schemes and acts.Quality and Affordable Education for All Deprived Children:Oxfam India partners were instrumental in enrolling 3000 children into schools. Over 14200 SMCs (school management committees) members were engaged on advocacy and awareness on compliance of RTE Act. 524 teachers were supported and trained on various teaching methodologies.Empowering Forest-dwellers to Manage resources Sustainably:2684 women farmers from 35 project villages were organised into 150 producer groups. Awareness and training programs were conducted, reaching out to 75237 women and men, increasing their knowledge on Forest Rights Act and CFR (Community Forest Rights) management.

We as a humanity are facing a challenging time with the pandemic causing heart-wrenching misery around the world. It was heart-wrenching to see the pharmacy of the world gasping for breath. The nature of the pandemic has tested the limits of the people and the state. Since the outbreak of COVID- 19, Oxfam India has been providing for both immediate and long-term needs of the most vulnerable and excluded communities across the country, especially in rural areas.WHY WE NEED TO SCALE UP OUR RESPONSE IN RURAL AREASASHA workers are the pillars of delivering healthcare to rural communities. They go door-to-door educating people about maternal and child health, contraception, and sanitation, as well as enrolling them in health programs and monitoring the results. They also ensure immunization, give first aid, and administer antimalarial and anti-tubercular drugs and oral rehydration solutions (ORS). ASHA workers are an integral part of tackling COVID-19 spread in rural areas.A survey conducted by Oxfam India in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh shows that only 75% of ASHA workers were provided with masks and only 62% received gloves.  Oxfam India is supporting ASHA workers by<ul><li>Providing COVID care kits to ASHA workers. These kits contain</li><li>thermal guns, oximeters, masks, gloves, aprons, sanitizers, handwashing liquid soap bottles and</li><li>handbook with information on preventing and managing COVID-19 disease</li><li>Training ASHA workers on COVID-19 disease, containment measures, common signs and symptoms, home isolation protocols, usage of oximeters and thermal guns, and vaccine hesitancy.</li><li>Working with Gram Panchayats and Primary Health Centers to equip ASHA workers on personal safety and precautions</li><li>Working with the government to ensure a substantial increase in the health budget to strengthen the Indian public health system</li></ul> 
 Each ASHA worker will reach out to families in villages and create awareness about COVID-19, hygiene measures to prevent the disease, address myths and stigma around COVID-19, and vaccinesOxfam India is reaching out to ASHA workers in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and West BengalYour support to ASHA workers will enable them to reach out to 7.2 crore people.

Equipping Asha Workers To Battle Covid-19 in Rural India

11-year-old Shanu has never stepped inside a classroom but can throw multiples of 5 at you like any math wiz. That’s because he is busy selling samosas for ₹5 at his mama’s shop. Like every other child in his village, Shanu too is cheap child labour. During Covid, when schools were closed for around 3 years, there has been huge learning loss among children. It is more likely that a large number of children like Shanu will not come back to school again due to prolonged discontinuation from education and will be pushed into child labor.  
 To deal with the situation, Oxfam India is running Mohalla Classes in the neighborhood locality of children, who are engaged through activity based learnings and then linked with education. Volunteer identified from the village or locality is oriented about teaching learning process and activity based methods of teaching. After three months of classes, children are mainstreamed into government schools so that they continue their education there. Oxfam India's community mobilisers actively engage with parents, teachers, School Management Committee (SMC) and the local authority (gram panchayat) to keep close watch on the activities of mohalla classes and act as a catalyst to mainstream children into neighborhood school. As large number of children in the mohalla classes are from most marginalized sections, inclusion and gender are core of the program where special focus is on children from marginalized section.  
 After a lot of hard work and persistence from our team, parents came on board and expressed that they wanted their children to read and write; some of them even provided space outside their house to conduct classes. Slowly, as children started attending classes, we realized that despite being in 4th and 5th standard, they could not even draw a line! The Mohalla classes introduced them to reading and writing. And the results after 3-4 months were encouraging — children could draw, read, write, recite poems, and rattle off alphabets in Hindi and English and the multiplication tables!Thanks to our intervention at Hazwa Bazaar area, Shanu is now a student of Class V and states with pride, “Now I will not sell samosas, instead I will solve math problems.”Help us bring these children back to school.... Educate for Change

The worst earthquake since 1934 has hit Nepal. The death toll has crossed 7000 and thousands are injured, with many more feared trapped under rubble. The exact figure is still uncertain at this stage, but is continuing to rise. The Government of Nepal has declared a state of emergency in 30 districts out of 75 in the country and appealed for international humanitarian support. The rains and the aftershocks will slowdown the relief and response work. People are now exposed to the rains and the cold and there is an urgent need to ensure that they are provided safe and adequate water, food assistance and emergency shelter materials. 
 Oxfam is providing clean water to over 50,000 people and shelter to 9,000. We aim to provide aid to at least 4,00,000 people and have started work in five districts, delivering clean water and toilets. Oxfam has already started working in five districts: Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur in the Kathmandu valley, and the more remote Gorkha and Sindhupal chowk districts. 1440 households have received emergency shelter and water containers including water purifiers. Oxfam is also working on providing transitional shelter given that monsoons are round the corner and that additional support will be required by the people to withstand the rains. In an endeavour to reach out to more people, Oxfam India has become the charity partner for the event - Kolkata to Kathmandu a journey in giving. Kolkata to Kathmandu was an idea that changed into an event to support a cause! The cause of helping rebuild Nepal. The fundraising dinner is scheduled for 2nd July in Kolkata and all the proceeds from this will go towards supporting Oxfam India’s work on ground in Nepal. 
 Till now, Oxfam has helped more than 60,000 people. 53,800 people now have access to clean water. 6,360 people now have safe sanitation facilities. 4,447 people have received food assistance. 9,000 people now have emergency shelters. 500 people have been helped to restart their livelihoods.
