The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, no healthcare, no education, there was absolutely nothing”, says Bipin Dhane founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. The PBKSKS works with the DNT Sabar community in the Purulia and Bankura districts of West Bengal. Indian writer and social activist late Padma Vibhushan Mahasweta Devi was working as President of the organization from 1983 to 2014. Currently, the organization works on livelihood, Education, Socio-legal rights, Entitlement to social schemes rights, women empowerment, and health and promoting the Sabar Handicraft. PBKSKS is working with a population of over 12552 Sabar people in 168 hamlets under 8 blocks of Purulia and 1 block of Bankura district.Paschim Banga Kheria Sabar Kalyan Samity has been the voice of the Kheria Sabar community for the last five decades. Kheria Sabar community is a neglected tribe dwelling in the remote forested region in the Purulia district of West Bengal. The Sabar Community, like many other tribal communities, faces numerous challenges in accessing quality education due to the lack of infrastructure and resources in remote areas. These children are the 1st generation learners. The Sabar hamlets are usually far off from nearby villages as well as schools. The kids have to walk miles to get to the school in most cases. Alcoholism and illiteracy of the elders have a negative impact. The parents hardly have any motivation to encourage education to the children. Seasonal migration of the parents due to poverty becomes a hindrance in the education of their children. The parents are totally illiterate and all these children are 1st generation learners. This Hostel facility would provide these 75 Sabar girls with a safe and supportive environment where they can focus on their studies and pursue their aspirations. PBKSKS has been trying to promote Sabar Education since the establishment of the organization in 1968.We must educate a considerable percentage of the Sabar population. Literacy only can enable them to claim their rights and entitlements. We want the new Sabar generation to live up to the expectations of the rest of society. This is the only way to end the discrimination they still face. All hindrances to Sabar education prevail in the Sabar Community will be removed through this hostel.
