The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, and very limited access to healthcare and quality education”, says Bipin Dhane, founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. In India, a large number of children struggle with reading, writing, and basic numeracy by Grade 3. These learning gaps often begin much earlier—when children enter school without emotional safety, self-regulation, or readiness to learn. Classrooms then become spaces of control and silence rather than curiosity and exploration. Many children, especially from low-income and high-stress home environments, are labelled as “disruptive” or “slow,” when in reality their nervous systems are overwhelmed and their developmental needs unmet. When these early needs are ignored, academic difficulties and behavioural challenges become deeply rooted, making later interventions costly and less effective. The cause we address is the lack of developmentally appropriate, emotionally supportive learning environments in the early years of schooling. By focusing on kindergarten—when habits, regulation, and relationships are first formed—we can prevent learning gaps before they appear and set children on a joyful, sustainable path to literacy, numeracy, and lifelong learning.
