In the dark and dingy alleys of red light areas, injustice, pain and suffering run rampant. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, Of the 250 the children rescued from abuse and exploitation, around 70 of them are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. His NGO Snehalaya to date has transformed the lives of millions. Girish’s work is crucial for the survival and safety of vulnerable children of sex workers. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. PNF’s focus is Peren District, a remote district of Nagaland. The district has about 114 villages. The district is hilly and villages are scattered with practically no transport communication. The villages are isolated. Children with disabilities are mostly locked up in these villages with poverty adding to their isolation. Our main motive is to help these children go to school and to motivate the parents to send them to the nearest schools. We pay for their school admission fees and other necessary items for the completion of year by year schooling. We also ensure that these children get their disability certificates, get their Aadhar cards and open their bank accounts, without which they cannot get their governmental benefits and other entitlements from the government. 
 The organization has been working in this area since 2014. The organization visits and creates awareness among the people and then identifies the children with disabilities.The next step is to facilitate medical assessment of the children with disabilities. The organization motivates the families to send their children to the nearest school which they can reach by any local means.Along with encouraging studies, the organization continues to facilitate the registration of the children for their Adhaar cards and bank account opening, apply for their scholarship and other entitlements. Skills development is also given importance for their livelihood and improve the quality of their lives. 
 The impact expected is that:1. Persons with disabilities will turned into differently-abled individuals with skills and education for some to enter mainstream life under 4% reservation of the government.2.	They will gradually enter mainstream community life, contribute to the community by taking active part in the community decision making, church programs and community events. 3.	The impact will be that the differently abled persons will become an integral part of society structure and enjoy better social status.4.	The differently abled persons shall become productive members of the society, and can take up leadership roles in the village community. 5.	The traditional embarrassment for being a disabled person and isolation will end and bring a positive change in society.
